6:56 Gakpo didnt just burst past him there, he actually did something even smarter, the reason the defender stopped like that was because Gakpo was slowing down and pretty much baiting him that he will push the ball to his right and shoot probably. But Gakpo did something so smart, he just knocked the ball to his left slightly taking it away from the defender as the defender thought he can snatch it. And the rest is history.
That ignores the point that a defender needs to be proactive and not reactive in that situation. The defender should be able to read the fact that Calabria his team mate is coming back on a recovery run. The defender needs to 'delay' in order to buy the time to allow an additional defender to come back and help... at that moment, if he had showed Gakpo inside (they hadn't quite got super close to the goal yet), Calabria could have come back in time or force a long distance shot from Gakpo. Instead by letting Gakpo square him him and burst down the line, he has not allowed the 'delay' to occur, and Gakpo has acres of space to run into and then create a 3 v 1. One of the basic principles you are taught on coaching courses when it comes to defending is the art of delay and Gakpo had initally with his poor touch, allowed Milan back into it but then Milan failed to seize the initiative.
I’m inclined to agree. Defender didn’t make a mistake in vacuum, he was baited into one. Maybe Gakpo’s first touch wasn’t what he wanted it to be, can’t really tell, but he devised a good trap to keep the threat.
Trent's defending always gets called a struggle, but criticisms are always nitpicking and he handles most wingers well if he's focused on staying in his rb position instead of roaming high up
Liverpool fan. Watched the game. Liverpool dominated Milan from after they conceded till the end of the game. Leao got locked up by TAA. The wider media won't say nothing about it tho. Also felt that the gaffa for Milan hindered Leao tho, but if i was Leao, i would be demanding for the ball 24/7 if i see I'm not getting it. Gakpo was a menace. Best attacker on the night, and Gravenberch balled out.
I was totally impressed with Gravenberch and Gakpo. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Arne Slot is Dutch and understands the two of them.
Happy belated birthday Arne! 🥳🎉 Great work overall from his team awarded with 3 points (and first of hopefully many great nights and victories in the Champions League) which, as the boss said is the perfect present from the team (beside the cake that they apparantly have made him 🎂) Back to winning ways and much improved preformance, a bit of uncertainty by our attackers (Jota, Mo hit the the crossbar so need to concentrate and be more clinical in finishing the attack) to finish the chances infront of them (at least from open play) Ibou and big Virg are menace in the air and could always cought the opponent in the box and hit a strong header! Maignan had a brilliant game up until he had his injury, but the young goalkeeper of Milan was also soild for the most part! Milan was too open and trying to press Liverpool high up the field was devastating for them, thus giving us all the time and space to go for a transition (counter)! Our press was very well organised but not in the first 10 minutes when it was disbalanced, but the players made a diffrence in winning thier duels, which coused a very uncomfortable situation for Milan! Rafa Leao though ⚡🏃➡️⚽ Safe to say a elite dribbler - that move turning away from two Liverpool defenders and than striking at the near post (What a save from Alli ⚽🧤🥅 in the last minute) Trent, we know he isn't so famous for his work rate and defending (1v1) against a world class winger like Leao, but TAA contained him throughout the game and later Gomez (from the bench) did the same! Gravenberch, absolutly reborn in this new Liverpool team, looks so brave, sharp with his descision making on the ball, good vision, but his impact off the ball (tenacity, aggression, getting involved, put on tackles and interceptions) Just exceptional Grav 👊 Today however, was the day of Cody Gakpo! Speed, pace, dribble, awarness, picking the right moments when to pass (the assist for Szobo, important for him by the way and his confidence) cut on his right foot, coming from the right hand side! My Man of the match for sure, appart from VVD and proved he would be valuable part of this squad! ✅ First minutes for Fede Chiesa as Liverpool player! @@ThePythagorasPerspective Your analysis and approch on football is really captivating and I'am following you for more intersting content such as this! All the best 👊
Gakpo was a menace so was Grav both absolutely outstanding but one man's incredible efforts seem to have gone under the radar once again and that is the ever under appreciated Mo Salah!! Salah evolved his game under Slot as he hit the inside of the crossbar twice in a matter of minutes to the extent Milan's GK and France Int was rattled and had to fake injury to save himself some blushes.. Salah intercepted 6 out 7 duels from Milan's own half hence creating those two chances out of thin air and almost scored everytime despite hitting the ball from redicolous position or situation... Its like watching prime Messi all over again for Salah is the closest thing to ever grace Prem that has any similarities to messi the GOAT!
Your intro doesn't seem like the right analysis of the game... As a defender, Konate maintainig his run in the middle was actually the safest option at that point. If he decides to get close to Pulisic, he not only opens up for a cross to the player at the other wing, but also perfectly sets up the player down the middle which he was marking cos Pulisic would then have the chance to either make a pass down the middle or cross the ball to the other end with the first choice being the most likely to result in a goal. In my opinion, the point he miscalculated was when he second guessed Pulisic's run by tracking back a little in anticipation of a back pass to the player in the middle. If you watch closely, it is that little reaction that cushioned Pulisic to continue his run in that direction before shooting the ball.
If you are incredibly narrow the whole way to your box, you are allowing players to just run in and shoot off the angle... especially when you are dealing with a Pulisic who is right footed and reknowned for his shooting. If you're dealing with an inverted winger, then Konate positioning would have been flawless.
Konate was playing the odds, had he ran across; as suggested by you, then you'd criticise him for brainlessly leaving the guy in the middle wide open. Tsimikas was attempting to cover the massive space left by the weak/ineffective press by the forward, just a shame his aerial duel was also weak.
Konate is faster and stronger than a Pulisic. If he cuts off the pass whilst getting closer to Pulisic and challenges him to push the ball down the line … Konate would win that duel. At some stage you have to try and engage to effect the shot. Either way Konate and Trent were put in a very difficult situation so I would not call this an error by them.
@@ThePythagorasPerspective imo Konate played the situation correctly. How many times out of 10 is Pulisic beating Alisson from that angle. Also, he probably felt Mac Allister could do the job you're asking him to do
He's done that quite a few times this season, probably to make teams try and cover the goal even from such a sharp angle - like they did here, allowing Trent to cross more freely.
@@ThePythagorasPerspectiveTrent has been on point this season with shooting from corners. He’s been so close from scoring from a corner 2 or 3 times already

Exactly this! Not sure how he’s missed that in the analysis.

Pretty much. Gakpo made the defender think he's going to his stronger right foot. That split second hesitation is all that it took.
I’m inclined to agree. Defender didn’t make a mistake in vacuum, he was baited into one. Maybe Gakpo’s first touch wasn’t what he wanted it to be, can’t really tell, but he devised a good trap to keep the threat.
Completely agree. Failed to give any credit whatsoever to Gakpo for manipulating the defender and baiting him in.
Trent's defending always gets called a struggle, but criticisms are always nitpicking and he handles most wingers well if he's focused on staying in his rb position instead of roaming high up
As long as he’s mentally in the zone for defending it makes a big difference

AC Milan are 10th in serie A. Really not a very good team at all yet so I'm not sure how much we can take from this.
They’ve had a poor start to the season.

Godawful. But Gakpo was a handful to be fair
I thunk the wall was placed incase trent goes for goal
As mentioned, very difficult angle to go directly on goal. If moved a bit to left, can cover direct threat and potentially effect the crossing angle
He's done that quite a few times this season, probably to make teams try and cover the goal even from such a sharp angle - like they did here, allowing Trent to cross more freely.
