goosebumps when Chester's vocals come up.
I was looking forever for this comment
They leave us hints and bread crumbs into their inner conflict that they battle every day alone and in plan sight. Breaks my heart when I see a warrior get tired of the fight and give themselves to rest and the end of their pain. Tragic. Rest in peace Chester.
Rip Chester
Grey Rock Sadly I know those thoughts
Always
I find it weird that people rip on Brad Delson for playing overly simplistic guitar riffs. I don't see what else he could play that would fit Linkin Park's music any better.
Mark Lugg exactly....playing what fits the band is the best thing and Brad does that very well.
Same with Rob Bourdon's drums. He sticks to simple beats and maintains a fixed rhythm throughout the song, but that's what makes the song as a whole sound good.
I agree! To me, a great guitarist doesn’t have to be defined by technical skills. Sometimes a guitarist just needs to know what to write to make the song work well.
Its great that they have simple riffs. As someone who just started playing the guitar, it feels great to play their riffs without having to learn too much
A key to great bands. I've never been a big fan, but It was easy to hear why they became popular.
At around 5:00 when he mutes all the other sounds, except Chester's voice, my heart broke a bit.
Chester 😔💔
Linkin park is amazing. Hybrid theory changed everything.
My favorite album of all time. Every song is perfect
It didn't change anything
it helped me thru a very dark time...
@@07nikhilchaudhari83 go listen to Pink Floyd then oldhead.
I freaking love this series so much.
Jeffrey Lewis It gives so much insight into production, very interesting! :)
Yeah this is great. I dont think anyone else on the tube is doin this either.
SAME DUDE! Listening to every detail of these songs is so mind blowing!
I like his taste in music - not snobby at all - blink182 atst is fun to play
best series on UA-cam
The one thing I usually like about Linkin Park that Numb doesn't display much of is Mike Shinoda's and Chester Bennington's ability to interchange their vocal styles. Very few vocalists are actually able to pull off that. Forgotten is a good example of this with their intro and bridge.
In the end, Somewhere I Belong, Lying from you and more too
By Myself is my favourite song in terms of Mike and Chesters chemistry
@@GNVS300 same
@@GNVS300 the bridge is awesome! "Don't you" "KNOWWWWWW"
@@bellamybomb I can't tell you how to make it
No matter what I do how hard I
I can't seem to convince myself why
Fuck man it's too late for this pump up
R.I.P Chester!
I’m surprised he never talked more about Joe Hahn and Mike’s production/keyboard and turntable/synth parts, would love another LP song in the future. Miss you Chester. 🖤
If he could do Crawling, that would be sweet!
he did crawling 3 weeks ago, check it out
I can’t say enough how much this song helped get through my teen years. My all time favourite Linkin Park song. Great breakdown.
Linkin Park was a big part of my healing after a divorce in my 40's. "In the end" was my entrance to LP. Love the band. Was fortunate enough to see them in Jersey once too.
It’s haunting but beautiful to hear just Chester’s vocals. He truly had such a unique voice and will always be remembered and missed
Rick is incredible. He can make an acoustic guitar appear our of thin air. 4:49
What..?
Or like at 9:02 where his strum swaps the guitar :)
You mean 5:49?
5:49
@@SauvikBiswas lol
One of the reasons why I love Linkin Park is how the layers in their songs are so well put together.....
What makes Rick Beato great? Let the fans decide.
posting his live schedule would make him greatER.
Matt F he has a late night Livestream channel if you want more live stuff
Noah yep, but I never know what time it starts.
He has picked some pretty awesome songs for this new series of his. He knows an awful lot and is more than willing to share his knowledge of the field. All and all he really has a Mastery of his field. I wish I could pay for some of his stuff but seeing as my guitar as back at home and I'm not getting paid these days I've opted to just appreciate his music. God Bless him.
This series!
Linkin Park is phenomenal live. I saw them with incubus back in 2012 best concert I've ever been too. Chesters voice sent chills through my spine that night. So sad he's gone RIP
Such charismatic personality talking about real music played by real musicians. Rock on Rick!
Hearing Chester's isolated voice took me immediately back to the Kroger I worked st when my wonderful ex texted me right when I clocked in and said he died. Couldnt be bothered to just wait and tell me. Dude I was so tore up inside I told my manager that my grandfather passed away so he would let me go. That was easily the saddest and longest car ride home ever. What should have taken mayhe 10 minutes felt like hours while I was blasting the meteora album all the way home that was a sad day for me. 26 year old young adult at the time and I had an emotional breakdown over someone I didnt even know.
Nirvana, Pearl Jam and now Linkin Park, awesome 👏
Now do "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden.
Eric Rakestraw • If we’re making Soundgarden requests my vote would be for either “Outshined” or “Room A Thousand Years Wide.” (God damn it. I’m missing Chris now. Again. Still...)
As a fan of LP and Rick, it's such a great episode. For moment, I feel like listening to Numb for the first time.
Chester was so good, so sad that we lost him. Great job with this series, it's been really good!
I heard Crawling for the first time in years and was shocked by how well it has aged. It's a phenomenal song.
I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times, and you just made me love it even more. My number one band, always will be. There will never be another one like Chester.
Man I’ve heard this song hundreds of times over the 20+ yrs of being a fan and I’ve never seen a production breakdown of this song. Absolutely amazing. I miss this band so much…and I got so much goosebumps hearing Chester’s isolated vocals 🥹
Chester Benningtons voice gives me chills. Absolutely incredible vocalist. One of the best voices in music history
This is amazing! I love listening to Linkin Park multi-tracks, it’s amazing how many sounds they can cram into one mix and years later I can still find new sounds in their music.
Harmonically Numb is a looot like What I've done - similar hook in keys, wholes in bass, heavy distortion in chorus, 4 chord harmony, diatonic bridge, no shinoda rapping
But two completely absolutely different songs!
That's how you master the tools you have.
Whats really amazing is how they took such simply elements and used them as building blocks to assemble a complex increadibly powerful song. Even after all these years I still love their music. No matter how many times I hear it, it still takes me to another place.
One of my favorite albums. I also love everything they've done except One more light at first. It took a bit to grow on me. But I do agree Chester had this raw passion. Rest in peace to him. I still will never get over his death and Chris Cornell.
Excellent analysis, would you mind checking Waiting for the end? because man, that song amazes me everytime, the vocals, the instrumental, the arrangements, everything
E MA or maybe even When they come for me
the perc on that song is on point yooo
Indeed! That song is a masterpiece.
I opened this video thinking it was about Waiting For The End
My favorite 😍
That song is a gift to mankind.
This song really shows how simple but effective music can be while still being excellent. If you wrote the lines first, the guitar really emphasizes the stronger notes that Chester’s voice has on this track. And the synth isn’t too crazy either. The bass is simple too. But the simplicity makes so much sense for the song. I personally wouldn’t have changed it in any way.
I wouldn't call it a simple song, really. Sure, the individual parts are indeed simple, but the composition is anything but. This ain't your simple pop-punk hymn that anyone could have written, there's A LOT going on in this song and putting all these parts together in such a harmonic and conclusive way is not easy.
Imo it's always been a big part of Linkin Park's signature sound to combine lots of simple pieces into a complex composition that lets you discover something new every time without sounding cluttered. My favorite example for that is Powerless. I've probably listened to analyzed that song a hundred times.
@@LRM12o8 Oh, I fully agree. I think that's what makes Linkin Park great, the individual parts are designed so that certain parts can shine individually. And Powerless is such a great underrated track by the band.
Linkin Park, and the album Meteora, are what got me into rock, and music in general, since 2007
My goodness, it's incredible to see just how many layers these masterpieces have
This is the best channel on youtube for Production tips, techniques and analytical listening and understanding of music. Awesome stuff! Thank you so much for this!
Never was a big fan of LP but I respect their unique sound and Chester Bennington was an amazing talent who wrote some great lyrics.
BlackDogsMatter Chester was a great vocalist that brought so much emotion to the song. But the musical genius in Linkin Park is Mike Shenoda guys please give him the credit he deserves.
People often look past Mike for some reason. The backing vocals in this track are also sung by him (well, half of them. The octave ones are)
Mike is the main lyricist . He wrote most of the songs and is the most musically talented guy in the band.
If you disallow nostalgia value, I don't see how this can be called great.
The production represents an early example of today's synthetic tropes that Rick's always criticising. Maybe LP suffer from imitation, but this is plastic.
@@george474747 I mean LP was really important to a TON of teens in the early 2000's
Great analysis Rick. Loved breaking this one down with you.
RIP Chester. Still miss you, brother.
The bridge part always hit me hard .You can really feel the emotions.
Yeah the ascending rhythm with the ascending melody accompanying it.
This insight proves how amazing and professional LP was and how compatible they were with each other as a band. Thank you so much for the video ☺.
I know this video is old but Linkin Park is one of my faves. R.I.P., Chester. Right around 7:30 rick is talking about his clean voice, which was incredible, as was his "vocal fry" technique. This band was the perfect synergy of styles at a time when a lot of music was getting stale. Thanks, Rick!
Dude you are amazing, disecting songs. I'm infatuated with these series, keep it up!
I will always have a soft spot for Linkin Park, my earliest memories of UA-cam is watching videos of Dragon Ball Z fight scenes with Linkin Park playing in the background, thinking about those simpler times gives me serious nostalgia.
The thing i love about this series is how effortlessly you teach new concepts to all abilities. You could play this to a class of people with little to no musical experience and they'd learn a lot, on the other hand you could show a group of Berkerley graduates this and they'd still pick up some new tricks.
It's so awesome.
it's a quite simple song but solid constructed, love their music!
I'd say your face is simple but solid constructed.
hehehe
Simple? It's sounds simple cause it so well done but it has so many layers of amazing parts in it.
I thought this song is complex
Wow, this made me relaize how good they are musicans
Sulwek Olejbik How good they are, musicians.
Actually, imo and compared to the other videos of this series, what makes this song is the vocals and the production (synths, samples, reversed effects. etc) everything else is simple (I'm not saying that is bad). Check the police and Van Halen videos for pure raw musicianship :)
Their songs like Numb show how genius guys in the band like Mike Shinoda and Brad Delson were at creating unique chord progressions. Their A Thousand Suns and Hunting Party album show more of their talent with instruments.
man listen to Wastelands
@@rhcpmd Yeah. I don't see anything special. It's clearly a personal favorite because of Chester Bennington and because he likes Andy Wallace. Every single other one has a thousand more things going on than this.
Rick not only ferrets out all the hidden nuances of production, but also simply exudes glee in what he's sharing! ... Rick revels in clever, unexpected & memorable riffs... Rick, YOU are a joy to watch!
My favourite band of all time. Had the chance to see them once in 2006 when they first came to Portugal.
Am I the only one who loves it when he isolates the music? It just makes me see the songs in a whole new perspective.
7:55 Chester grungy voice a capella. Very few singers can achieve that sound. Rough but not screamed. Powerful but controlled. Sublime. By far the best singer (studio and live) of the Numetal scene. I lost interest in the band after Meteora with all the electro stuff but Hybrid Theory will always be in my disc collection and was the biggest album at tye start of the millennium when I was 18, even in Chile. We all feel like that when we are teens. And the sound was so original. Best debut and best singer of the new millenia
My favorite song is Breaking the Habit
Me too man, it brings such a heavy atmosphere with it
Absolutely love Linkin Park! So talented! May Chester Rest In Peace.
Thanks Rick, another great break down.
Another production element worth noting is the call and response approach to how the chorus vocal parts were recorded.
Chester had a hell of a voice, from absolutely beautiful to glass breakingly harsh. RIP
Never realized the layers in the song. You've changed the song for me and made it better.
Andy Wallace also mixed LP's 6th album The Hunting Party btw
I LOVE these videos.
A few suggestions:
-Gojira: Planned Obsolescence
-Minus the Bear: Pachuca Sunrise
-Dredg: Bug Eyes
-Scar Symmetry: The Illusionist
Loved this video! You are able to break things down to a point that I could never appreciate about a song that I have heard a million times but never listened too apparently!! Thank you. This is so inspiring! I’ve been subbed for a long time and never post comments but I just had to say thanks.
His voice is so tender and vulnerable in his vocals.. how could we not save him... how did we not know
This series is awesome. I am hearing new things from songs I've listened to probably a thousand times.
Yes, long sustainable, dark, power chords, along with the keyboards and you have some powerful stuff going on for sure ! Another great one Rick ! How about some Pink Floyd, Crazy Diamond,,,, Great intro ! :)
the test of any singers sound is if they still sound good when you solo them... And Chester Bennington DEFINITELY does
Linkin Park is my all-time favorite band! I don’t know what it was but I just never got tired of their music. Glad you made this video so early in your fantastic WMTSG series! I learn so much from your videos. Thanks for making them, Rick!
jeez the vocals alone gave me chills
Wow, that's amazing explanation. This will surely help me with making my own music. Would you believe this masterpiece was meant to be cut at one point? Record company wanted them to include the song on the record, that's why it stayed, otherwise it would be cut from Meteora and probably never released as anything else but LPU song. I guess when they made them keep the song there, LP decided to work on it more and turned it into gold
Chester's voice is just... Amazing!
I really like the way you teach us about music and the production
So nice to hear somebody with knowledge appreciating all genres of music. Too many haters saying grunge sucks, nu-metal sucks etc. Your ears dont lie. If you like it you like it. Doesnt matter what genre.
REST IN PEACE CHESTER ❤ YOU WERE INSPIRATION TO A GENERATION.
-LEGENDS NEVER DIE-
Linkin Park could absolutely put on a show making you want more! They were pure entertainers!
My favorite band of my childhood is gone. And I can't listen to it anymore without bringing good memories and also so sad/bad feelings that make me tear up. I miss Chester.
Klasse einfach Klasse.
Something from Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream! Would be very interesting to hear you disect all those layers. Linkin Park and Blink are my favourite bands so thanks for doing those!
Soma!
Quiet - Smashing Pumpkins
Mayonnaise!!!!!!!!!
1 up on "Mayonnaise". That track has a great sound. I think I know what those layers are but I want Rick to confirm it.
OMG, same! Those are my fav bands too:)
Linkin Park is one of the greatest bands of all time: this a hill I will die on.
The complexity of their music is greater than the sum of it's parts - and that is the beauty of it.
The first two albums are exceptional
And the plethora of great albums with a handful (or all) of hits (or worthy ones) on each. Along with the ranging abilities and styles. So damn good.
If you die on this hill at least you may find Chester
I was singing along the whole time. This brings back so many memories, I'm so fortunate to have seen them here in Dallas; an unmistakable, irreplaceable voice. Thanks, Rick, for talking about one of my favorite bands of all time.
This has to be one of my fav WMTSG episodes.. I have always loved how LP used all sorts of instruments to make their songs so recognizable and hit deep. To hear this song (my fav LP song) broken down is SO amazing. Thanks, Rick. Love the channel.
My favorite Linkin Park song!!!
Van Halen's "Push Comes To Shove" from their "Fair Warning" album.
It's almost as if they were paying homage to the Rolling Stones during their "Some Girls" era and yet it's still, unmistakably, Van Halen.
Why is it great? Surprisingly, the bass line (and tone) is exceptional. The rhythm guitar part is typically great, but atypical for his style and guitar tone. The guitar solo is tastefully composed, with good phrasing and tone, and complements the song all without suffering from the "Hey, look at me!" thing. I love the sound of the tune and the record as a whole. It's dark and raw and the least radio friendly outing they ever released, but for the better.
Anyway, for me, it's their most perfect (unpopular) song ever... which will likely cause it to never be explored on "What Makes This Song Great?" but sometimes it's nice to be wrong.
Reminds me a lot of Depeche Mode when you take the heavy guitars out.
Cambodia69 - probably my favorite solo from Fair Warning
I don’t think this song is underrated at all. There later work is highly underrated. Certain LP fans: Yeah LP changing there sound up is such a sellout move.
What!? This is Linkin Park not AC/DC.
However radio is different all around the country but I can’t imagine this song being underplayed by any station that plays Linkin Park.
I cannot describe how much I love this series! Please never stop!
I've listened to this song so many times, but there was so much in the song that I never heard before. Nice job.
What a fucking beautiful song...
I could listen to isolated Chester vocals all day
There is a capella on Spotify for the album Hunting Party
Thanks for the great content, Rick. I really enjoy these older videos where you deep dive into the Mixing and Production techniques. I don't need a tutorial or harmonic analysis for every song. Keep up the great work.
I love that kbd part! Perfect blend with the heavy guitars.
What makes this song great "Let Down" by Radiohead or "Gypsy" by Fleetwood Mac or "Chandelier" by Sia? And THANK YOU so much for this channel and sharing your gifts and knowledge, your a total beast!
Chester had a voice you’ll never forget RIP 😞
My mom says your work is beautifull.
You're awesome, keep like this
The guitar tune on this song is just just great , Linkin park music style is so unique and amazing...
This is a major long shot, but I would love your analysis of Type O Negative. My all time favorite band, to me they are musical geniuses. Peter Steele's death hit me really hard
YES PLEASE
I think Love you to death has a lot that could be analysed
Josh O'Hara Absolutely! The entire October Rust album blows my fucking mind on every level
Guys, he doesn't listen to stuff in the comments (for the most part). Go to his website and hit the forum. There is a dedicated place for suggestions for this series. Good luck!
Josh O'Hara love that song... wow, I hadn't heard it in years. Great suggestion.
Sadly we will never be able to hear from them again!!😔😢
love this series, it was always a dream to be able to hear the stems soloed. Thanks Rick
This is such an intensive song - i LOVE it. Even the video with Chester in front of this hanging mic. Awesome.
This episode of "What Makes This Song Great?" is too short, there is more to say about this song. It is the "hardest" song, that makes me cry.
Please do Green Day
Nah they ain't punk enough even Dave mustaine is more punk than the whole band combined
He just did!
@Dissonant Timbres I thought punk purists hated them because of Time of Your Life, because it sounded like a sappy acoustic ballad.
@Dissonant Timbres how the fuck can someone be a Punk and a Purist at the same time
@Dissonant Timbres it actually has 6 chords
Meteora is so great in what world do people not Like linkin park lol awesome
I love how varied thisseries is my music library dpans many genres

Thank you for making this video on the song that changed my life...
Subscribed. That was a fantastic analysis.I did not expect the song to be so awesome in terms of production. Now I love it even more.
Ok Rick, now you just have to do Deftones :D
Hopefully any song from "Around the Fur" album will be reviewed.
YASS!
I want to say he did one but nothing off the first two. Maybe Change, maybe Minerva (I can't remember) but now I'm gonna have to look back to see if he's done any others

This series is awesome! I'd love to see you break down a Nine Inch Nails song soon
Bump. Closer!
Meteora was so well produced!! I love it! Thank you for this! !
I love that some one with Rick's musical palate can still appreciate Linkin Park. The musicians of his caliber/generation I have spoken with often turn their nose up at them. Rick you totally nailed what drew me to them as a teen. Chester's voice was so unique with his flavor of vocal distortion. And their guitar/bass mix was perfect to my young self.
*Would* you do Alice in Chains?

Well done. Favorite song of theirs
@@YatiAcharya i'm imagining someone called Alice readind this and being afraid
This is the first one I watched since the blink-182 one. It was really interesting but I felt like the blink one had more explaining WHY the song was great whereas this felt more like a straightforward breakdown of how it was put together.
The breakdown and why are the same things. It’s literally just the way I talk about the song. I do the same thing on all of these.
Rick Beato Fair enough. Wasn't expecting you to change your style on my opinion or anything. Maybe I was just being more attentive during the blink one. They were both very interesting regardless.
I'm loving this series, I really hope you keep doing more of these frequently! Really great analysis, and you seem genuinely excited describing the different parts. I bought your book too, keep up the great work, man!
Man, I need a loop of those drums. Never realised they had a sick reverb having listened to this song thousands of times. How did you separate stems. Amazing analysis Rick Beato
