WILL I DROWN? Waders & A Life Jacket (Buoyancy Aid)

  • On so many occasions, I’ve been told that I’m crazy or stupid for wearing my waders whilst out in the boat, even with the addition of a life jacket. I’d always been told that providing I wear a suitable life jacket I’d be ok should I fall into the water, but comments on social media made me doubt this. In an attempt to see what the reality was, I decided to do some tests using a friends swimming pool. Here’s what I found out.

    Right love the channel ,and interesting little Demo .
    You are wearing a personal floatation device not a Self inflating Life jacket which will flip you over in the water if you Knock yourself unconscious 150 kn buyoncy seems to be the standard with CE rated life jackets .
    Cold water shock ,age ,health issues ,time of year will all contribute to potential drowning incident .
    Wading around in the margins ,fish photos ,clearing weed ,baiting up please wear a PFD for your safety .
    600 people a year drown in the UK DO NOT BECOME stastic, ruining your family's life ,it is not worth it people .
    I have carp fished for 43 years and used boats on numerous venues here and abroad ,run a syndicate if you go out in a boat Self inflating Life jacket that is checked each year .
    No life jacket banned for life .
    It takes seconds to drown and it is not like the films shouting and screaming you slip under the surface of the water while completely helpless trying to not inhale the water .
    Horrible way to die as they all are .
    My experience as a Fire Fighter, and Water safety champion for my fire rescue service ,specialist water technical rescue unit and working at the Big one show at Farnborough and trying to educate individuals and company's on the risks when on or by the side of lakes and rivers both here and abroad .
    Any questions information happy to help if it helps save one soul it is worth it .

    Many of you are probably too young to remember when Fox lost Keith Selleck, one of their Directors, when he fell out a boat during a work party at Savay . They could not get him back in the boat because of his waders. Another person , Clive Rigsby died in the same tragic accident.
    The Coroner said they had drowned due to not only not being able to get back on the boat because of the extra weight of water trapped in the waders, but also because the rescuers could not pull them from the water.
    Even if you are wearing a life jacket/buoyancy aid, you are still not getting back in a boat. This happened to a politician on, I think, Rutland Reservoir. He fell in with waders, his life jacket deployed, but the 100 yards swim to shore in cold water killed him. He was seen trying to get into the boat, but could not get more than his forearms up onto the gunwale.
    Tragic.

    Thanks Elliot for helping put peoples mind at rest. There have been awful tragedies carpers fully out of boats getting legs tangled in weed. The life jacket if the key so even if you banged your head falling you should be Ok.
    I have watched demonstrations on wast flowing rivers where obviously waders get used and you are pretty likely to slip on slimy rocks. There the message was to lift your legs up as air then stays inside and you cannot be dragged down by currents or get trapped in weed. Let your legs be pulled along before you by the current and move your arms to bring yourself into the side with vegetation to grab onto.
    But the waders themselves aren’t the hazard people thing they are.😊

    Chest waders can certainly help, when you go in bend your knees and use the trapped air. Thigh waders. Different situation totally. I learnt this when I was on a three year fishery course down at Sparsholt. We had to do drills in the local swimming pool, chesties and thigh waders. Thigh waders were scary as hell. Chest wades help you float. Try getting out of the pool though....

    It's a bit of a myth that waders full of water will drag you down as the density of the water both inside and outside is the same, no extra weight at all. I used to do another of scuba diving on wrecks and have had a failure on one of my drysuits resulting in a total flood, no problems getting back to the surface just bloody hard work to get back onto the boat.

    Interesting video and honestly I expected you to sink much more with just the waders on. I do think though it seemed after a short period of time, under 1 minute you struggled and put the jacket back on. Imagine being hundreds of yards off of the bank, possibly in the dark and just having waders on. Terrifying. In even moderate winds the boat would drift away quite quickly also. I think the take home here is if you are on a boat, wear a flotation device!

  • @PaulScowen
    @PaulScowen 2 роки тому +2

    So much bs is talked about re waders and boats.
    Any water in your waders weighs the same as the water outside so is neutral whilst you are in the water.
    In fact they can be used as a buoyancy aid.
    When studying at Sparsholt in the 80’s we were trained on falling in and had to jump in a pool wearing waders and in wellies.
    When wearing waders simply ‘sit’ in the water with your knees bent. You will trap air below and above your knees.
    The same is true of thigh waders, only you’ll trap less air so they won’t be as buoyant.
    If in running water make sure your feet are pointing down stream so you don’t hit your head.
    It’s actually very hard to get rid of all the air that’s trapped in waders, as you will see in this video when Elliot had to hold the waders open so even if you don’t know what you are doing they will be more of a help than a hindrance.
    Wellies are much harder. You need to get them off under water, return to the surface and empty them, then hold them upside down under your armpits to act as buoyancy aids.
    Obviously the waders are going to make getting out of the water harder, but you’ll still be alive.

    Completely different in a proper at sea emergency, and if you are still conscious ? The sea is going to be a lot colder and energy zapping, and you would be more likely to become parted from your boat in a rough sea? If someone sees you go overboard you’ll be lucky but if you’re alone and nobody sees you it could be hours before anyone realised you’re not home yet? How long do you think you can tread water? Remember you’re legs would be working harder to move the weight of the water inside the waders, your life jacket should have a crouch strap? It’s there for a reason. Once you are exhausted you could easily slip out of your life jacket , taking all these things into account and you are fortunate to reach your boat will you have the strength to pull yourself onto the boat?

    • @jamesrussel1133

      Erm he is a carp fisherman. It’s to check it is safe to fish in waders from a boat on freshwater lakes. He did say that at the start had you listened. And it is even safer using tighter neoprene waders where no so much water gets in and you stay warmer.

    Despite the outcome here in a warm shallow domestic swimming pool this is an incredibly dangerous and potentially life threatening situation. The variables are vastly different in a real time situation and would be condemned by any authority such as the Environment agency, RNLI, coastguard and RYA etc. Please seek some level of professional advice and training on the correct equipment and practices before taking to any boat if you are inexperienced. Safety is paramount over practicalities.

      @js543 2 роки тому +1

      @@cypographycarpfishing It was an extremely interesting experiment of a very contentious issue and I appreciate that I’m just reiterating your conclusions at the end of the video. My only concern is the influence on people that may have not watched it to the end or those that will only take what they want from the outcome through stubbornness or lack of basic safety training when on a boat. The bottom line is always be prepared for a worst case scenario such as unconsciousness, fatigue or hypothermia. There is definitely an audience for a trained professional to be invited to be a guest on a boat fishing content based video to discuss the safety issues concerned. It’s interesting and if it saves one life it would be worth it. Failing that there’s been numerous tragic deaths of carp anglers in the Uk on boats over the years that could counter any argument.

    Try getting back in the boat in chest waders,

  • @ShaunQuestBaits
    @ShaunQuestBaits 2 роки тому

    Interesting but it doesn't properly cover a 'normal' scenario with several layers of clothing adding issues. It is clear from the film that should you not be conscious or very active (bang your head or temperature seizing your body) then you will drown with a buoyancy aid on as is worn in the film. You will stand a better chance of surviving with an actual life jacket which are designed to turn you over and keep your face out the water rather than a buoyancy vest which simply adds buoyancy to help counteract clothing weight.
    Why take the risk of wearing waders in a boat?
    Many will come away from watching this without looking or thinking any deeper into it and will presume that they will be fine.
    I can assure you it hits home real hard when a friend of 40 years who was an accomplished boat user, falls out and drowns. It hits even harder when that happens in view of his son and his brother.
    Whilst on this subject, most who like to think they are safe with their self inflating lifejackets aren't. The popular 150 Newton bottles will turn you over fairly quickly if you are of slight build. If you are let us say 'well formed' then it is going to do little. I forget what the weight per gas cylinder/life jacket size you should be using is, but I am sure a little asking around could put your mind at rest.
    Also remember that these tests aren't carried out with fully winter clothed anglers. Buy the largest you can afford if you are likely to be out of quick help range from others.
    Love your work, but I had to comment upon this one which fell close to my heart.

    • @cypographycarpfishing
      @cypographycarpfishing  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Shaun.
      Appreciate the comment, and with regard to your comment, I made sure to say this in the film. There are many variables that could effect or change the outcome of this test. I did it in a warm and controlled environment, no wind, no cold, my waders, my buoyancy aid.. but the point was simply to show that despite what everyone says to me, the danger is not as plain as it seems. Falling in in waders does not kill you alone in most cases.
      People will always wear waders and a life jacket, as boat fishing necessitates the combination during the colder months. I will redo this video in winter, with more layers on and in cold water.
      Ideal situation is always, don’t wear waders on a boat, make sure you have the correct life jacket:buoyancy aid on and you’ve secured it properly, and be careful.
      This was a simple test to put my mind at rest, and it has.
      I’ve never been a fan of the the “gas cannister” jackets. Never worn properly and too easy to go wrong I think.

      A buoyancy aid is like a body warmer design, and will keep you afloat. But if you fall in unconscious face down, you will stay floating face down. A life jacket in same situation, is designed to flip you onto your back supporting back of head and keeping it out of water.
