Yeah. Christian Vander is a fabulous drummer. Such great judgment in real time. He moves between really compelling groove ideas and dramatises the arrangements and vocal parts with just the right power and panache. He is really enjoying what he’s doing and you can see his ears are always alert to the rest of the band. His facial expressions give away that utter commitment to whatever he’s playing.
I'm so glad they still play this tune live. Attahk kinda gets some bad reviews because it's more...funk/jazz/rock oriented, but to me, it's some of Magma's strongest and most beautiful work! You can listen to it in almost any frame of mind...not so with records like Udu Wudu...I can't listen to that one or MDK all the time...makes me crazy!! However, sometimes that madness is welcome...long live Magma!!
@@jpslebassiste he is regarded in that level by the people who have heard him, I think point is that Magma aren’t as well known as they deserve to be so a lot of people don’t even know who Vander is
One of the best drummers ever seen. Saw him live around 1980in Milano and I still remember that concert. Thanks Magma, thanks Christian. You will always remain in my heart
Thanks so much for posting this. What an amazing drummer Christian is--and how unique his music is! He plays with more intensity and skill than any drummer I can think of, and he hasn't lost one bit of his energy or passion over the years. In fact, I think he's better now than he was back in Magma's heyday. I've been a fan since the late 60s, and I will continue to be as long as he keeps playing.
Great band. Amazing live. C. Vander's sound reminds me very much of Tony Williams' sound. Tuned very much the same. That high pitched kick drum and the open tuned toms etc. Also some of his playing is similar to TW. Very energetic and musical. CV is also a great composer. Peace.
Dunno how I missed this one. Great version, very close to original in the beginning and then... spaceship takes off. Magma's pulse is as powerful as ever. Hats off.
Fantastique morceau, énergie phénoménale, un groupe hors du commun emmené de main de maître par Christian Vander l'extraterrestre...! Je suis resté en apnée du début à la fin...! Ouf ...!
Meeting this man when Magma came to Australia for the first and only time will always be the greatest moment of my life. He even seemed somewhat impressed when I showed him my Magma tattoo 😁 (the key word being _somewhat,_ haha). If it wasn't for Christian and the equally deified Yoshida Tatsuya, I'd likely not have picked up the sticks myself... he showed me the true potential of drums ...and the true potential of vocals... and piano... and how resolute single-mindedness can unleash unrivalled wonders of the imagination! ...my only disappointment was that they only played one "song"... but that "song" so happened to be the entirety of the glorious "Theusz Hamtaahk" suite, one of my Magma top 5. I caught Stella and Hervé smiling at me a few times, too; I like to think it's because I knew all the "lyrics" and was chanting along with gusto 😁 Oddly, they were the first part of a double billing, with Sunn O))) following rather dismally afterwards - I love [some] drone music and respect their uncompromising approach (perhaps the only facet they share with Magma), but they were an abysmal choice to accompany Magma, and their performance wasn't engaging at all... just very, _very_ loud. 😂
I saw them in the 90’s in London, 15 minute drum solo, only Bonham had previously kept me engaged in a drum solo for that long but Vander got added to my very short list!
I once saw him do a 45 minutes drum solo even (yes, 45), and not one second of it was boring. It was totally awesome! I am a drummer myself and play in the band "Dark Goddesses" consisting of 6 women (all multi-instrumentalists, though not equally good on all of them; there are some instruments they excel in). My wife Jeanine excels in keyboards, especially piano, and vibraphone, our daughter Alice excels in guitar and trumpet, the other daughter Dorothy excels in cello, violin and acoustic and electric bass, my wife's sister Beatrice excels in flute and saxes, her wife Charlotte excels in harp and koto, and my best instruments are drums, vibraphone and electric bass. But we are all quite competent on lots of other instruments as well and swap a lot during our concerts. We all sing too and have some a capella parts in our music as well. We sometimes give very long concerts; our longest song is actually 5 hours long. When we play that one we all have little breaks, and we will understandably play only one short encore afterwards. Like Magma we have a concept. We are six ancient Greek Goddesses who all reside in the darkest part of the Greek Underworld, the Erebos. Jeanine is Ἑκάτη (Hecáte, the Goddess of Witchcraft; the "H" is not pronounced, and the stress is on the second syllable; the ´ marks the stressed syllable in all names), Alice is Ἀληκτώ (Alectó, the Punisher of Moral Crimes; one of the three Ἐρινύες or Erinýes in the Latin alphabet), Dorothy is Τισιφόνη (Tisiphóne, the Punisher of Murder; one of the three Ἐρινύες), Beatrice is Μέγαιρα (Mégaera, the Punisher of Marital Infidelity; one of the three Ἐρινύες), Charlotte is Ἔρις (Éris, the Goddess of Strife, Discord and Chaos) and I, Friederike, am Περσεφόνη (Persephóne, the Goddess of the Underworld). Since all six Goddesses have been occasionally portrayed as having snakes instead of hair on the head we had special wigs made of snakes made for us with little motors in them that really move. We all wear ancient Greek gowns too. All Goddesses have colours associated with them too (orange for Hecáte, yellow for Alectó, red for Tisiphóne, violet for Mégaera, black for Éris and green for Persephóne); the gowns and snakes are in these colours, and we paint ourselves head to toe in them too. We even sing in ancient Greek. We have not done a concert dressed like this yet; we had been a band before and performed on stage but only recently came up with this concept. The ancient Greek Goddesses had always been a concept, including the gowns, but the painting and the snakes are a new idea and haven't been tried on stage yet. All Goddesses will demonstrate some magical powers on stage too; we are currently working on the special effects for this with a friend who is a technician. There will be a lot of mad cackling on stage too from all Goddesses. We hope our concerts will come across as dark and eerie as we want them to be.
@@hazelthemcwitch One wouldn't suppose that a harp can sound evil, but in the hands of a true master like Charlotte even the acoustic harp can. And she has an electric harp too; when she adds some sound effects to her playing the electric harp sounds totally horrifying.
