  • A Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) of the atmosphere refers to a rapid rise in temperatures in the stratosphere that is sometimes linked to the onset of cold weather in winter.
In this video, we describe how this occurs and why rising temperatures at altitude can sometimes bring cold weather to the UK.

2:25 In September 2019, seven months after this video was published, a second Sudden Stratospheric Warming was observed in the Southern Hemisphere.

Will the stratospheric warming gets worse? Does that means, the polar vortex, will dive further south in the up coming years?

Good video but it's so hard to read the lines as well as keep the eye on the animation all together 🙄 ..rather than words audio would have been much better ..isn't it?

Thank you for this brilliant explanation. We are right in the midst of a disrupted polar vortex weather in Berlin - the place where the sudden stratospheric warming was first discovered, btw:-) Hence it's other name: "Berliner Phänomen" or "Berlin Phenomenon".

We have a displaced vortex just coming in. The Magnetic pole has shifted East towards Siberia which has upset the jetstreams for sometime now. This blue cold area will almost cover Britain and be cold until January.

Nice comment indeed. I am concerned about the pole shifting ongoing process. May I ask you if you could share some scientific publications links to deep my knowledge about causalities of magnetic pole drift and impact on Jetstream ? Thank you! And happy new 2023

When is the next SSW expected to occur? It looks like the Polar Zonal winds U10 hPa drop off late Dec? Anyone know and what is a good MET site To call up for PROJECTED SSW?

@Phoenix I know I was just angry about Trump tweets on recent arctic air in U.S situation, which was however result of SSW phenomen which is linked to polar warming and climate change so in way it connects. But the video is incredible i learned a lot by watching Met office videos.
