Having an imaginary friend should be the least of your problems. So many lonely people are out there, some are old and lost their spouse and cognitively deteriorate until put in a home and get neglected to death. I know. I lost my father in law this way. An imaginary friend is better than no friend at all.
Men deal with grief differently with loss, they internalize. This sad phenomenon occurs more often in older men, especially when facing conditions as the loss of a loved one, suffering from loneliness and loss of purpose in life. It is not uncommon for men to become withdrawn and even depressed,
Depression sucks. But this was a great, redemptive way to show how the imaginary friend (or imaginary alternate universe, etc. the list of coping options is endless) can indeed be helpful, can get one out of that rut. The line.....from his imaginary friend.... "you can be uncomfortable for three minutes or miserable for the rest of your life." That was indeed the turning point, wasn't it. Why oh, god, why do we monsterize or intensely amplify the things we fear? But once Barry endured the "catastrophe" that he so feared, it seems like he realized that, sure it was painful. But it was not fatal. And it was worth it. It was a start. As Dr. Leo Marvin put it, "baby steps. baby steps." That's what Barry did. He took a baby step. Side note: Isn't it amazing to see that Dr. Marvin didn't cure Bob. Bob cured Bob. And it all started when he pushed himself out the door and on to that bus, facing one of his many fears.
