      I agree. He's doing a great job and will be an excellent role model to his kids. They may not understand the situation now, but they will appreciate the sacrifices he made when they are older. I also pray the mother actually puts her hand in her own pocket and contributes some money! Some women just make me embarrassed to be a female!

      kwg2005 I think women have caught on that if he's a rotten husband doesn't mean he's a bad dad. They have stopped withholding the kids now to another extreme....
      Many women were subjected to single mom stigma & poverty for half their lives while Dads just ran off & procreated another family. it was a national travesity throughout the 60 & 70's. Now the tables have turned & frankly I think the kids may be better off!
      if she's the type to abandon her kids thank god their father stepped up!

      I think it would be good to switch it around as long as the father is not abusive because so many men don't see or get to experience the other side of it, especially the expenses and being single. Also no help from another woman or grandparents either.

      Nobody should pay child support. Its a bad system. A divorce or breakup is chosen, they gotta deal with it.

      Jesus Jimenez Courts favor the moms to the point of crippling the dads - the dads then end up paying for the mom and baby. Its a bad system ripe with abuse and misuse, and needs to be dissolved - ask around, for every good thing the system does, it does 5 bad.

      Women are also required to, but it takes a really long time and if they don't have a job then there is no way of getting it. I know people who just flat out stop working because they don't want to pay. In addition to that some people need or want to cut all ties for safety reasons. You can never really rely on child support.

    • @keyroncampbell

      Dawna Walker such a double standard... the child support laws are horrible

    • @ladydaybreak7463
      @ladydaybreak7463 8 років тому +20

      I meant in general, it takes a long time to get anyone to pay it if they don't have a job etc. That's a serious issue, I am a mother who does not and will never receive it, but that's because I choose not to pursue because I don't want any ties with my ex. I hope my comment didn't come off as me trying to make excuses as I only meant that women ARE also required to pay, but the act of getting a deadbeat to pay...well they will probably somehow end up getting out of it. It's not an issue of mothers not being held accountable it's actually an issue of a lot of people not being held accountable. Having said that I also think there are people that are charged way too much for child support, the entire system is messed up. Hope that makes more sense.

    • @creamcandy25

      It's the same here in Norway. The rules are biased! My stepson lives with us and my husband has custody.but when my husband applied for child support from the biological mother, it was unfortunately disapproved due to her income. Problem is, the system says she doesn't have enough money but she buys the latest gadgets and rents big houses which costs alot here! 😡

      The child support laws need to be rewritten. They are not effective now days. There are too many escapes for the non paying parent. I am a believer that the non paying parent goes to jail. Too many walk away. The system does not enforce. But I do understand parents that do not pursue payment if their safety is in question.

    One of my best friends whom I met in the gym is a single father. When we met back in 2014 he was struggling hard trying to make ends meet for him and his child. He went to school to become an airplane mechanic but couldn't find anything for the longest time. The gym was really all he had. He didn't have a car, didn't spend on anything, couldn't even if he wanted to. Went through years and years of legal battles to keep his child as the mother literally just took off. The courts made it extremely difficult for him to gain legal custody, despite the mother not making a single court appearance.
    He was finally blessed with a job working for Delta. He went from making nothing to over 4.5k a month starting. He's since moved to Florida where I assume he's making even more now as the years have gone by. He's one of the greatest people I've ever met. The love for his child was unlike anything I'd seen. He could have left his son but instead went through it all to gain custody and eventually build a great life for the two of them.

    Marcell, Dave mentioned cutting grass on the weekend. I mow lawns part-time and it's true you can earn some good money on the side. I earn 16.50 at my full time job, and earn roughly $50-60/hour while I am out mowing. I can whip out a lawn in 25-30 minutes and charge them $30 per week. If you really are willing to do what you have to do you can improve your lifestyle. In the Summer I put in 60 hour back breaking weeks, but I also earn an extra 3-5k per month during the mowing season too. Whatever you decide to do it will be work, but you can do it.

After 6-7 hours you tend to be pretty warn out and ready to be done. 90% of my lawns request to be mowed weekly. The other 10% I do every other week and charge 40% more than the weekly clients per cut.

    Became a single dad with three small children. 20 months, 4, and 6 years old at the time I received custody. That was 28 years ago. They are adults now. All with college degrees and good, decent people. There were times I look back on, and cannot believe we made it through. Without getting into a long winded story. My philosophy was, to get up every morning, put my feet on the floor, and proceed with my day. And save what I could, no matter our financial situation. If one cannot live on 400.00 a week. One cannot live on 380.00 a week either. It took time at first. Knowing that money was there, but only touched it when I absolutely had no choice. Such as my vehicle breaking down. My first thousand I saved, my truck broke down and it cost me 800.00 to fix it. But realization that I had the money to fix it. Only disciplined me to save more, to have that sense of security in a tough monetary situation. Thank you Mr. Ramesy for giving this young man such good advice.

Mothers aren't known for paying child support anywhere near as well as fathers statistically and thanks to the sexism of our judicial system, it proably will continue. I'm sure the reason he has the children is because she's not a competent mother, and obtaining support from her may just make things worse.

      You can't demand they pay support. You can request it and they can fire back with a request to have some custody. I have seen some awful custody battles and the neglectful parent winning more in the end.

    Dave, I hate the answer to this. There has to be changes made with the college loans system. If going to school doesn't get you to where you can live without getting a second job, what was the sense in going? Live within your means, but in order to get somewhere you need to show a degree, which now you can't live within your means because the schools are sucking it all out of you. Thanks for this video

    • @ReyReyloads
      @ReyReyloads 10 років тому +11

      Colleges are nothing but businesses. Its the individual person that is responsible for using their resources properly. My wife and I went to college and we are both doing fine. My best friends and his wife are both engineers and make together 160k right out of college at the age of 25. I also have a friend who works for Walgreens with a photography degreee. And a friend working at a grocery store with a business degree. What's the sense in going if you doing use the degree and the resources that come with it? Colleges have made us all THINK that we cant do anything without a degree. And that the RIGHT thing to do after highschool is a go to college. That is the same mentality as some one thinking that you NEED a credit card. Kids getting out of high school need to get this out of their head, because it isnt a race. I respect the 26 year that just got a degree with no debt far more than the 22 year old with 50k in debt and no idea of what is what.

      I agree. The old model was go to college get a good job live life. Where taking loans would be worth it. The new model is go to college maybe get a job that pays half what it did 10 or 15 years ago try to survive on it fail. My advice to young people is if you want to go to college work your way through or look into trades which there is probably more work in anyway like electrician or plumbling or air condition mechanic. College is only going to be profitable in certain majors like nursing or sciences. Also although entrepreneurship is not for everybody try something small like Dave said like cutting grass or part time handyman.

    I made $10 for a long time. I was efficient as possible with my money. I remember I managed to save my money for 5 months to go on a vacation. It was a VERY budget vacation but I was broke afterwards and it was so demoralizing. Then I just picked up a side hustle which gave me an extra $100-$300 per month on average. I did that for a couple of years and the VP of the called me and said they were very happy with my work and offered me a full time position. I now make $40 an hour and my life has completely changed. So do your best even at a low paying job and it can turn into something great.

  • @archangele1
    @archangele1 5 років тому +4

    One thing people have to be careful of when talking about how much a person makes
    on the side is what the overhead costs are. You can make 30 an hour mowing, but that
    mower needs constant maintenance and it needs fuel. Plus, you need to be able to transport it and
    the transportation costs money and requires maintenance. So, that 30 an hour,
    after over head is backed out can end up being only $15 or less an hour in your pocket.
    Not saying to not do it, but be realistic. I have seen a ton of people go out of business because
    they refuse to deal with overhead. They are doing fine until a critical piece of machinery
    breaks down or needs to be replaced. A thing of paying them selves first and never
    paying the company. That is a fast track to going under in any business.
    As we always say, if it has any moving parts, it's going to break down some time.

    I feel like I can relate to this video the most. I'm a single mom of one child who receives monthly SSI because he's disabled (autism). I just graduated from college and have $14k in student loans. I'm working part time, about 20 hours a week, making $8.25 an hour. I'm now applying (and interviewing!) for state jobs with salaries of $25-$30k a year. I'm slowly working my way through Dave Ramsey's baby steps and am tackling some old accounts that I have in collections while simultaneously saving $1k for my emergency fund. This video was very inspiring. I want to eventually get my Master's degree in Counseling and work as a mental health counselor. The salary for counselors in my state is about $50k. Now I know what to work towards.
