I also pray the mother actually puts her hand in her own pocket and contributes some money! Some women just make me embarrassed to be a female!
kwg2005 I think women have caught on that if he's a rotten husband doesn't mean he's a bad dad. They have stopped withholding the kids now to another extreme.... Now the tables have turned & frankly I think the kids may be better off! if she's the type to abandon her kids thank god their father stepped up!
I think it would be good to switch it around as long as the father is not abusive because so many men don't see or get to experience the other side of it, especially the expenses and being single. Also no help from another woman or grandparents either.

Wow! This really hit home. Been going through this struggle for 4 years now. I hope Marcell and his boys are on top the 🌎 . All the men ( women) who share this journey, I wish you the best!💪🏽
The mother should be paying child support and or held accountable for not doing so,we have a double standard in America men should receive support as well.
Women are also required to, but it takes a really long time and if they don't have a job then there is no way of getting it. I know people who just flat out stop working because they don't want to pay. In addition to that some people need or want to cut all ties for safety reasons. You can never really rely on child support.
I meant in general, it takes a long time to get anyone to pay it if they don't have a job etc. That's a serious issue, I am a mother who does not and will never receive it, but that's because I choose not to pursue because I don't want any ties with my ex. I hope my comment didn't come off as me trying to make excuses as I only meant that women ARE also required to pay, but the act of getting a deadbeat to pay...well they will probably somehow end up getting out of it. It's not an issue of mothers not being held accountable it's actually an issue of a lot of people not being held accountable. Having said that I also think there are people that are charged way too much for child support, the entire system is messed up. Hope that makes more sense.
It's the same here in Norway. The rules are biased! My stepson lives with us and my husband has custody.but when my husband applied for child support from the biological mother, it was unfortunately disapproved due to her income. Problem is, the system says she doesn't have enough money but she buys the latest gadgets and rents big houses which costs alot here! 😡
I was almost in tears when Dave was giving that dearly nearly thoughtful meaningful advice like a father would do for his son. Dave Ramsey may be a millionaire or make millions but when he tries to makes the life of other people better, I dont mind even if he becomes a billionaire. Growing together is no sin. Its the right thing.
Rich - if he doesn’t exist to you, what difference does it make if he gave him money or not ? Dave donates to those in need, but why should he give money to those who have money but do dumb things with it ? Sit down.
I would think so. Hopefully he’s acquired some knowledge to help him earn a better living. Also, hopefully these children’s mother is now contributing financially to supporting the children she laid down and had.
The child support laws need to be rewritten. They are not effective now days. There are too many escapes for the non paying parent. I am a believer that the non paying parent goes to jail. Too many walk away. The system does not enforce. But I do understand parents that do not pursue payment if their safety is in question.
Maybe my fav Ramsey call. Mutual respect, encouragement, Dave challenges him and suggests ways to get ahead and improve his life. This is what it's all about.
One of my best friends whom I met in the gym is a single father. When we met back in 2014 he was struggling hard trying to make ends meet for him and his child. He went to school to become an airplane mechanic but couldn't find anything for the longest time. The gym was really all he had. He didn't have a car, didn't spend on anything, couldn't even if he wanted to. Went through years and years of legal battles to keep his child as the mother literally just took off. The courts made it extremely difficult for him to gain legal custody, despite the mother not making a single court appearance. He was finally blessed with a job working for Delta. He went from making nothing to over 4.5k a month starting. He's since moved to Florida where I assume he's making even more now as the years have gone by. He's one of the greatest people I've ever met. The love for his child was unlike anything I'd seen. He could have left his son but instead went through it all to gain custody and eventually build a great life for the two of them.

Marcell, Dave mentioned cutting grass on the weekend. I mow lawns part-time and it's true you can earn some good money on the side. I earn 16.50 at my full time job, and earn roughly $50-60/hour while I am out mowing. I can whip out a lawn in 25-30 minutes and charge them $30 per week. If you really are willing to do what you have to do you can improve your lifestyle. In the Summer I put in 60 hour back breaking weeks, but I also earn an extra 3-5k per month during the mowing season too. Whatever you decide to do it will be work, but you can do it.
DENNISLOPEZINC I can do 12-15 lawns in 1 day before it starts feeling like a really long tiring day. After 6-7 hours you tend to be pretty warn out and ready to be done. 90% of my lawns request to be mowed weekly. The other 10% I do every other week and charge 40% more than the weekly clients per cut.
I know someone who's been driving for FedEx for 15 years now and makes $23 bucks an hour and works overtime every week at time & a half! Overall 45/50 a year.
Became a single dad with three small children. 20 months, 4, and 6 years old at the time I received custody. That was 28 years ago. They are adults now. All with college degrees and good, decent people. There were times I look back on, and cannot believe we made it through. Without getting into a long winded story. My philosophy was, to get up every morning, put my feet on the floor, and proceed with my day. And save what I could, no matter our financial situation. If one cannot live on 400.00 a week. One cannot live on 380.00 a week either. It took time at first. Knowing that money was there, but only touched it when I absolutely had no choice. Such as my vehicle breaking down. My first thousand I saved, my truck broke down and it cost me 800.00 to fix it. But realization that I had the money to fix it. Only disciplined me to save more, to have that sense of security in a tough monetary situation. Thank you Mr. Ramesy for giving this young man such good advice.
He told him to work more. I bet the kids would like to throw a ball w Dad but he's tired from 40 hours and mowing lawns. I bet u like this too you will own nothing and be happy
I'm guessing he would seak custody. Mothers aren't known for paying child support anywhere near as well as fathers statistically and thanks to the sexism of our judicial system, it proably will continue. I'm sure the reason he has the children is because she's not a competent mother, and obtaining support from her may just make things worse.
Did his financial situation improve? does anyone know? you don't find men willing and able to raise kids on their own and also seeking self improvement...
This is the call I needed to hear Dave take. Thanks, Marcell for being a Great Man, he’s definitely worth more $$$! And thanks Dave for giving him the advice I too needed to hear as well. This made my day.
You can't demand they pay support. You can request it and they can fire back with a request to have some custody. I have seen some awful custody battles and the neglectful parent winning more in the end.
Beautiful :) This is something that I have also struggled with as well. God bless this man for what he is doing for his family, for his kids, and for himself! It is amazing! Such an inspiration!

God bless you Dave! That is extremely kind of you to have sent Marcell those books. They will change his life for the better. I really hope that his life has gotten better since this call.
I'm a newly single dad. I sense this guy will be alright. It's definitely tough, but this is one way we get to prove we're men and we'll persevere and provide what is needed for ourselves and our kids. Good advice Dave, and thanks for the inspiration.
Dave, I hate the answer to this. There has to be changes made with the college loans system. If going to school doesn't get you to where you can live without getting a second job, what was the sense in going? Live within your means, but in order to get somewhere you need to show a degree, which now you can't live within your means because the schools are sucking it all out of you. Thanks for this video
Colleges are nothing but businesses. Its the individual person that is responsible for using their resources properly. My wife and I went to college and we are both doing fine. My best friends and his wife are both engineers and make together 160k right out of college at the age of 25. I also have a friend who works for Walgreens with a photography degreee. And a friend working at a grocery store with a business degree. What's the sense in going if you doing use the degree and the resources that come with it? Colleges have made us all THINK that we cant do anything without a degree. And that the RIGHT thing to do after highschool is a go to college. That is the same mentality as some one thinking that you NEED a credit card. Kids getting out of high school need to get this out of their head, because it isnt a race. I respect the 26 year that just got a degree with no debt far more than the 22 year old with 50k in debt and no idea of what is what.
I agree. The old model was go to college get a good job live life. Where taking loans would be worth it. The new model is go to college maybe get a job that pays half what it did 10 or 15 years ago try to survive on it fail. My advice to young people is if you want to go to college work your way through or look into trades which there is probably more work in anyway like electrician or plumbling or air condition mechanic. College is only going to be profitable in certain majors like nursing or sciences. Also although entrepreneurship is not for everybody try something small like Dave said like cutting grass or part time handyman.
Dave what were the books you wanted him to read? I feel like I can relate to his story exactly and everything you said makes sense for me too! I'd really love to know which books they were please.
i'm 17 and have a $9 an hour job, 70% of my paycheck goes to my savings account. Born again Christian ! Thank God He has saved me from The New Age Deception. Thinking smart is the way to go !
If you're 17 then 70% is equivalent to about 10% when you're 30, 70% ain't zip! more like 90% (because most of the time the other 10% is just gas and insurance if you have a car, I do not believe in "having just a little fun" other than that.), but hey, that's just me. Good for you though, seriously!
This man who called in should be an inspiration to others. I am also impressed with Dave Ramsey giving away all the books. I realize that it costs him very little to do this, but certainly doesn't have to do it.
Uncle Dave, I don't know if you'll read this, but you give me so much hope. I know I'm going to accomplish everything I set out to do, just because you speak so much life into me and my current situation. Thank you for being you. ❤️
If the situation was flipped, Marcell would be paying at least 800 a month for child support, but the mother doesn’t have to pay anything in this situation.
I made $10 for a long time. I was efficient as possible with my money. I remember I managed to save my money for 5 months to go on a vacation. It was a VERY budget vacation but I was broke afterwards and it was so demoralizing. Then I just picked up a side hustle which gave me an extra $100-$300 per month on average. I did that for a couple of years and the VP of the called me and said they were very happy with my work and offered me a full time position. I now make $40 an hour and my life has completely changed. So do your best even at a low paying job and it can turn into something great.
One thing people have to be careful of when talking about how much a person makes on the side is what the overhead costs are. You can make 30 an hour mowing, but that mower needs constant maintenance and it needs fuel. Plus, you need to be able to transport it and the transportation costs money and requires maintenance. So, that 30 an hour, after over head is backed out can end up being only $15 or less an hour in your pocket. Not saying to not do it, but be realistic. I have seen a ton of people go out of business because they refuse to deal with overhead. They are doing fine until a critical piece of machinery breaks down or needs to be replaced. A thing of paying them selves first and never paying the company. That is a fast track to going under in any business. As we always say, if it has any moving parts, it's going to break down some time.
My heart goes out to this struggling father. I hope life turns around for his family for the better and he finds a job and career that fulfils and supports their lifestyle.
I feel like I can relate to this video the most. I'm a single mom of one child who receives monthly SSI because he's disabled (autism). I just graduated from college and have $14k in student loans. I'm working part time, about 20 hours a week, making $8.25 an hour. I'm now applying (and interviewing!) for state jobs with salaries of $25-$30k a year. I'm slowly working my way through Dave Ramsey's baby steps and am tackling some old accounts that I have in collections while simultaneously saving $1k for my emergency fund. This video was very inspiring. I want to eventually get my Master's degree in Counseling and work as a mental health counselor. The salary for counselors in my state is about $50k. Now I know what to work towards.
I don't understand why so many people are against having faith. This is a sad time we are living in. Believing in God, going to church and taking Sundays off is very important to being successful in life. My Grandmother always said "the family that prays together stays together."
JCLandscaper88 There are people who do not go to church but are good people. There are people that go to church and are good people. And there are those who do both and are bad people.
JCLandscaper88 I believe it is the family that PLAYS together, stays together. I don't believe church is anything more than an exclusive club, open only to those who are either active participants, or wish to be part of it. Not me, I'd rather give my time to my family.
The man stepped up and is looking after his kids, running a home and doing it on a shoe string. He done the hard part, he proved he had the character to deal with a situation that's very difficult. Dave saw his potential, and treated him with the respect he earned through his actions. I really hope he was able to follow this advice and make good things happen

God bless him. He's a single dad and he's doing a good job. I wonder how he's doing now. I hope he's doing well as he raises his babies.
A real father and man. This was a great call with great advice for him 🙏🏾
This was two years ago, I wish Marcell would update us. I really hope he is in a better position now.
Good luck to him, he should put the mother of his children on child support!
This is good advice from Dave Ramsey, I wish Marcel and his boys well.
My favorite call ever! We need more dads like you ❤️
Did his financial situation improve? does anyone know? you don't find men willing and able to raise kids on their own and also seeking self improvement...
smurfette Kanya there's more then you'd think but I agree it's not common.
@Helen Hines Thank you!
No because he listens to Dave Ramsey
Dave can you please get an update on Marcel
Joi S can I follow you on Instagram?
He's black so he's doin 20 to life!!!
BEN DOVER how miserable are you? Lol
JD123483 This is a white guy who creates fake accounts to perpetuate his racism aka TROLL
SLICK WILLIE dude what.
***** Can you post an update about where Marell is in his life since the show,I would love to know how far he has gotten since then...
This is the call I needed to hear Dave take. Thanks, Marcell for being a Great Man, he’s definitely worth more $$$! And thanks Dave for giving him the advice I too needed to hear as well. This made my day.
That guy should demand his ex-wife pay child support.
He should be getting some. Can he get support enforcement to go after her?
They probably was NEVER married. Lets be honest. Im single dad as well in the same boat ⛵
It’s a good idea but the average deadbeat parent pays a couple bucks a month just to keep themselves out of jail.
You can't demand they pay support. You can request it and they can fire back with a request to have some custody. I have seen some awful custody battles and the neglectful parent winning more in the end.
I agree
This man is a real father. The hope Dave put in him. You can really tell Marcel needed this peptalk.
Dave this one made me tear up. I’m on this journey also and I feel you’re shows help me. Thank you!
The Dude on this Call was "Worse than He Deserved"!
😅😅😅😭
I got so fired up for this guy. 👏🏽 You’re gonna kill it man! Probably already has. Just realized this video is 6 years old. 😂
Beautiful :) This is something that I have also struggled with as well. God bless this man for what he is doing for his family, for his kids, and for himself! It is amazing! Such an inspiration!
Props to this young single father taking good care of his children. Reaching out for help to better himself and better the life for his family. Bravo sir 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Sound, solid advice. I wish you and your boys well, Marcel. God Bless you above and beyond.....
This is the greatest show... literally. I feel blessed to have found this channel.
Good fatherly advice. Kudos to you Marcell for reaching out for help to make changes in your life and your children's ❤❤❤
This made me so emotional. God really used dave ramsey.praise god to glory be his name.
Wow! This really hit home. Been going through this struggle for 4 years now. I hope Marcell and his boys are on top the 🌎 . All the men ( women) who share this journey, I wish you the best!💪🏽
Whatever happen to Marcel? Dave, the way you loved on Marcel was sooo awesome!!!!
Here is a guy who does really good with what he has to work with.
I like how he handled this caller, definitely opened up his thought process! Best of luck to him
Strength and guidance to this single father, keep trying and things will change for the better. I love how the host dealt with it. He gave him sound advice, while pointing out the facts.
The power of being a human being: helping another human being to be better.
Keep on that grind, Marcel! Read those books Dave sent to you, and keep growing and improving. Keep things moving and things will get better each year. You can do it, mayne!
It so motivates me to hear you talk, but even more to hear you help all of the people that you help daily.
if it was a women calling and the dad didnt pay support Dave would have told her to go after him...why not the opposite i wonder...
I wonder if there is an existing support order? There's got to be an order deadbeat Mom isn't paying before a court does much.
It's a feminist society...
Josh Porter if it was a woman, you would have bashed her for being a single parent in the first place
Dave is gynocentric generally speaking.
Can't get money out of someone who doesn't make any.
My goodness!!! The reading part was gold. This is so motivational making financial freedom seem reachable not “easy” but reachable!
My husband was terminated late may this year and I quit my job (yes stupid decision but couldn't take it anymore) and we are both home he is getting unemployment and thank got that helps with rent and all bills and we have about 6months saved for leaving, but this videos are helping a lot, can't wait to get back on track and follow Dave Ramsey's plan and 7 baby steps!!!Thanks keep them coming!!
Same situation as me I'm just a single mom of two little boys. Love Dave because this is exactly what I needed to hear.
"I got a friend that reads two books because he wants to be a 2 millionaire" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
😅🤣 let me try that too🤪
This truly is Dave at his very best. How compassionate, truly moving. Hope the caller is doing better now!
I love Dave's advice on reading a book a week. And he was sending a case of books to Marcell!!!
Ramsey is a badass. I love the kindness with realness that knows how hard life is. Freaking inspirational!!!!
I hope he has a local food pantry he can go to and sets up a meal plan to reduce his shopping needs! It can go a long way.
God bless you Dave! That is extremely kind of you to have sent Marcell those books. They will change his life for the better. I really hope that his life has gotten better since this call.
Why didnt I get this advice when I was 16 instead of 50??
Amen!
Because you wouldn't have listened anyways.
@@floop7624 - Was the internet around when he was 16?
I am also 50. I think we are just stupid until we get to 50.
jimmyolsenblues no thats just you.
Thanks for the HOPE, Dave. What a great a call and a great plan. God bless you Marcell.
I'm a newly single dad. I sense this guy will be alright. It's definitely tough, but this is one way we get to prove we're men and we'll persevere and provide what is needed for ourselves and our kids. Good advice Dave, and thanks for the inspiration.
I have much respect for every word you just said Mr. Dave, God bless.
1:08 "does she pay child support"
OF COURSE SHE DOESNT!
Dave, I listen to this some time back. Please, give us a update for this young man! God bless him and his babies!
I do weekend cleaning for a school for xtra 💰. $18.00 per hr
This is my favorite Dave Ramsey call. He really gives great advice and encouragement.
Man it would be awesome to see how he’s doing now. It’s been 5 years since this video was uploaded 😲
Dave, what an amazing call. How well you are doing - it's EXACTLY as much as you deserve.
Big ups to Marcell, not too many men like him anymore! He will go far I know ❤️
Can’t get enough of the encouraging msg. Keep it up Dave!!
***** have fun stripping til ur 40!!!
r1pster Rude
***** IT project manager. You still need some skills like a certification or technical school.
would've been interested to hear how this one shook out. lotta good stuff happened during this call.
Dave what were the books you wanted him to read? I feel like I can relate to his story exactly and everything you said makes sense for me too! I'd really love to know which books they were please.
This is my favorite segment I’ve ever listened to. I hope this man is doing well.
i'm 17 and have a $9 an hour job, 70% of my paycheck goes to my savings account. Born again Christian ! Thank God He has saved me from The New Age Deception. Thinking smart is the way to go !
where do you work? I'm 18 and make 13$ an hour
***** Construction. Making foundations
If you're 17 then 70% is equivalent to about 10% when you're 30, 70% ain't zip! more like 90% (because most of the time the other 10% is just gas and insurance if you have a car, I do not believe in "having just a little fun" other than that.), but hey, that's just me. Good for you though, seriously!
well done laid. be orthodox Christian
Carlos Alberto that's awesome new Age is false doctrine Christ is the truth
This man who called in should be an inspiration to others. I am also impressed with Dave Ramsey giving away all the books. I realize that it costs him very little to do this, but certainly doesn't have to do it.
Good luck Marcell! You can do it!
I must have heard this case about 10 times. So inspiring. Im going back to school just because of this story. Very motivating!
"I gotta friend that reads two books a month because he wants to be a two-millionaire,"
...
"...ok"
Joke failed.
Didn't fail on me...I got it! 😁😉
Steven Davidson 😂😂😂
Uncle Dave, I don't know if you'll read this, but you give me so much hope. I know I'm going to accomplish everything I set out to do, just because you speak so much life into me and my current situation. Thank you for being you. ❤️
If the situation was flipped, Marcell would be paying at least 800 a month for child support, but the mother doesn’t have to pay anything in this situation.
That’s great Dave. Handled that situation with such class and love. Case of books!
Take her to court for child support, she would. I wonder how's he's doing now.
I love Dave! He was so awesome with this caller!!! 💗💗💗
Wish people know how hard for black man for work. Even with degree n experience they want to pay bare minimum.Salute Dad for making a way .
One thing people have to be careful of when talking about how much a person makes
on the side is what the overhead costs are. You can make 30 an hour mowing, but that
mower needs constant maintenance and it needs fuel. Plus, you need to be able to transport it and
the transportation costs money and requires maintenance. So, that 30 an hour,
after over head is backed out can end up being only $15 or less an hour in your pocket.
Not saying to not do it, but be realistic. I have seen a ton of people go out of business because
they refuse to deal with overhead. They are doing fine until a critical piece of machinery
breaks down or needs to be replaced. A thing of paying them selves first and never
paying the company. That is a fast track to going under in any business.
As we always say, if it has any moving parts, it's going to break down some time.
Awesome advice love this call & guidance
Dave skipped that child support fast, other way around he woulda asked for more info
My heart goes out to this struggling father. I hope life turns around for his family for the better and he finds a job and career that fulfils and supports their lifestyle.
Dave is the bomb
Dave,
That was WONDERFUL how you helped that young man! I have a deep respect for you!
John
Who cares? He is not there, so he is not involved.

Dave Ramsey is such a nice person, what a hero.
I don't understand why so many people are against having faith. This is a sad time we are living in. Believing in God, going to church and taking Sundays off is very important to being successful in life. My Grandmother always said "the family that prays together stays together."
JCLandscaper88
There are people who do not go to church but are good people.
Im sorry but faith doesnt pay the bills!
mmm...but God helps provide
Maybe because God doesn't exist
The man stepped up and is looking after his kids, running a home and doing it on a shoe string.
He done the hard part, he proved he had the character to deal with a situation that's very difficult.
Dave saw his potential, and treated him with the respect he earned through his actions.
I really hope he was able to follow this advice and make good things happen
Marcell, how have you been doing?
Dave Ramsey & caller - sending you both hugs all the way from Australia🦘
God bless you Dave. Planting good seeds.
