Went to visit the Legion in Aubagne in about 1977, as a US Army lieutenant, with a pal. First legionnaire I met was ex-82nd Airborne - he spotted us in the parking lot. Got to meet the Colonel in command of the 1st Infantry Regiment, and have lunch with he and his officers. He recognized our division patch and regimental crest. One of his officers was a Vietnamese Major, who started soldiering with French forces towards the end of their IndoChina war. The Colonel had a Captain take us through the Legion Museum, where we saw the wooden hand of Captain Danjou, and the tattered flag of, if I recall correctly, the 13th Demi-Brigade, among other Legion treasures. A most excellent memory!

Es ist tatsächlich das höchst ausbündige Panzerlied, in welches übrigens Silbe für Silbe "Mercedes Benz" von Janis Choplin hineinpasst. Ich habe es damals bei der Bundeswehr, natürlich unerlaubt und unbemerkt, so gesungen und damit die um mich herumstehenden Kameraden gänzlich drausgebracht. many of the german soldiers after WWII joined the french legion, hence there is a lot of influence of german songs. Not thing german songs are special, they also have other songs that show their inherit of other nations that after conflicts arrived to the legion
The melody probably came to the foreign legion along with some former soldiers of the Africa Corps who had joined the foreign legion after the Second World War.

My French friendx
royal marines #1
@honza: they were forbidden so they rewrote the words so they could sing then in the legion. SS marschiert in fiendesland= la legion marche, panzerlied= kepi Blanc, edelweiss, kamaraden, ect..
I finished my Recruits Course in the UK Royal Engineers in 1975 and was a coward and left for civvy street and 3 years in the resreves. I had a stupid plan of going to France and joining the Legion. Suffice to say I didn't and became a boring office worker and deserve to die in utter obscuriity
Malcolm Coghill don't beat yourself up about what never was.
the army told me i should have applied for the catering corpse before they flunked me
Malcolm Coghill hey , I like your honesty!
La legion vive ... Toujour !!! Legio patria nostra 💀
many of the german soldiers after WWII joined the french legion, hence there is a lot of influence of german songs. Not thing german songs are special, they also have other songs that show their inherit of other nations that after conflicts arrived to the legion
The melody probably came to the foreign legion along with some former soldiers of the Africa Corps who had joined the foreign legion after the Second World War.
Meu sonho é servir a legião
yes it is because after ww2 many germans like to be in legion foreign and they bring some traditions with them and ofcourse it was nice that's why singing in legion foreign some german songs!!!!!!!
live with your dream until 17 years then choose if that'll be your future job
if you want to be a soldier give it a try in your country and if you can handle it try the legion
by the time you reach 17(not 18 because you must have a clear idea what are you going to do after school)think of other professions you would like to work and after the military school in your country you can choose army or civil job
btw which country are you from. write to me in a private message
p.s. sorry for my english
actually many german soldier went in the legion etrangere so there brin some of their tradition
This song reminds me a lot of the panzerlied. Why are they so similar in melody?
where did you get that info. from what i've been told the ss was not welcome anywhere after ww2
nope. was originally designed from the new panzer corps, hence, "panerlied"
