The Thing (1982) rare teaser trailer, ‘ice block’

- John Carpenter’s 1982 classic was advertised well in advance of its summer release with this elusive teaser trailer. Long rumored to exist, this teaser is hidden on the 2008 French DVD release (where I got it from), and isn’t available on any other DVD, Blu-Ray, or even laserdisc release of the film! For some reason, the beginning of the trailer runs at 12 frames per second. I went through frame by frame and determined this must be the way its supposed to run, as there’s different bits of film damage each frame, as opposed to each frame being the same.
Echoes of the brilliant Alien "egg" promo!
Or this is one of those Budweiser commercials?
Exactly what I was thinking
If I'm not mistaken, I think the same ad agency worked on them both.
Perfect trailer. Like the first trailer for Alien 1979
But unlike alien 👽 thing bombed
@kascnef what do box office results have to do with the comparison of teaser trailers?
The look on Palmer face before he had to take the blood test priceless lol. i loved this movie Soo much i loved sibarean huskies with blue eyes ever since big props to John Carpenter I'm a huge fan.
Yeah when he makes that face "Welp, they got me"
Just before MacReady put the hot needle into the test sample of Palmer's blood, Palmer has this look of, "Oh well. I guess they got me." That's how I took it anyway.
It's funny, I never realized until recently that it's kinda an inconsistency that the thing's body was so close to the surface when its ship was supposed to have crashed eons ago, but... eh, it's still a phenomenal movie.
I have never seen this trailer before. I saw the original film on the big screen in 1982, too. I was 20 years old!
Now that is a teaser.
Right on! Movies don't get better than THE THING! I've adored this flick since circa age ten & this is my first time seeing the teaser. Really cool stuff! Good looking out!
Amazing! One of my favorite movies of all time. Practical special effects that hold up extremely well to this date. Great find and added to favorites! Thank you!
I couldn't agree with you more. That is one of the reasons the prequel failed. They couldn't match the practical effects of The Thing. Okay, it was the studio's decision not to go with the practical effects, still, it would have been interesting just to see them anyway, and let the fans give their opinions.
@@luckyspencer5390 prequel wasn’t bad just not necessary and for those people who went to see it the ending which bleeds into 1982 film they must have thought what kind of ending is this ? Believe it if not some people just go to a film without research
Great teaser for The Thing never seen it before.
Happy Birthday John Carpenter!!!
The Thing is the scariest movie ever made
Along with Alien 1979
along with The Exorcist.
Toy Story 4 anyone?
Bullshit Make that A Quiet Place
@@KobaLenk I was about to say that.
I know breaking blocks of ice is satisfying
But this one's an instant regret
Interesting choice to have the last 10 seconds be a black screen with just wind.
+G. James Berigan Indeed. Creepy stuff!
UnnamedRedshirt on the bluray they have three words
Anytime. Anywhere. Anyone.
Need to fill up that 60 second time slot!
Interesting and effective...
best trailer ever and a textbook classic example of one
Neat! I hadn't seen that teaser before, thanks for posting it.
Excellent Alien-esque teaser. Notice that no actors were mentioned in the credits.
Brian McColl 0:47 "starring KURT RUSSELL"
Brian McColl 0:45 You were saying?
Russell’s name is shown jerk off
I think Carpenter had used the same ad company that had made teaser promos for his 1979 movie 'The Fog', they're exactly like this one.
Oh fantastic! I have not seen this before
I wish Carpenter would put out a director's cut of this film. It is badly needed!
I know you asked this 2 years back - but was his cut that got released!
Yeah. As the person above pointed out, the finished film IS the director's cut. Carpenter is one of those directors who insists on final cut.
Not seen this before!
If I had seen it in my teens when I saw the film I would already be scanning newspapers for cinema release dates!
But now... over fifty my first thought was honestly, "Oh yeah... I do need to defrost the freezer!"
How the mighty have fallen! 😂👍🇬🇧
"It's already here"
They should have added this to the damn DVD release of many years ago.
I stuck up for it back in 1982 but still find it boring the only character I like is macready all the others are forgettable non necessary disgusting scenes like animatronic dog being shot etc I still love the effects but find the film boring
@@gkroll8467 lol okay moron.
Wow thanks for a great share, amazing seeing this first time now after all these years, great film saw it on betamax when it came out on video
Woow, where did you find that, never ever seen that trailer before, incredible.
Saw this in the theater as a kid and forgot I ever saw it ! Why isnt this on the special edition ?
Scream Factory is releasing a new Special Edition this September and I believe this will be on there along with a bunch of new bonus features.
Awesoe thnx
+Ronald H yup. I plan on buying this as this will be my first purchase of this movie. saw it on VHS.
Justin Fencsak - You picked a great edition to wait on buying. And yes, this teaser is included. I saw it in the theater as a 9 year-old! I blame my father and older brother. At least I got my way and sat FAR BACK!
Ronald H in all its grainy glory
Outstanding!
Trailers should be like this, without spoilers.
But there’s a creature in the ice 🧊
Cool. I remember this!
similar to the alien egg trailer!
Nice find!
Based on the story, "WHO GOES THERE?" by John W. Campbell, Jr. - I never knew this til just now, while reading the credits at the end of this trailer.
Reminds me of the original Alien trailer
1981 October 4
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
-- Robert Frost
For all the comparisons people make of Alien and The Thing being similar movies, even the teaser trailers have similar execution lol.
From Late 1981
The original version of the thing might have looked like a blob!!
What makes this teaser interesting, it was made before Rob Bottin and his team hadn't decided on what The Thing looked like yet.
Wonder why this isn't in any of the special features on the discs???
Cool! Just noticed today that Copper had a nose ring. HD
Very close similarities to alien
Cain Jenkins
So close, I think they ripped it off: ua-cam.com/video/DGAHtWV7Ua8/v-deo.html A really good ad campaign!
+Sean Wojtkiewicz He didn't mean the actual movie.
The thing and e.t. since it was released in the same year are two very similar movies.
There should be more spoiler free trailers
This is a teaser. They are generally made before the film is finished (sometimes before the film is even shot). So there was no footage to use. The regular trailer has plenty of spoilers. (Though how someone who's never seen the movie can pick out what is and isn't a spoiler has never been adequately explained.)
I just discovered this trailer on Tumblr.
Wow.
Ice
Any ideas who did the Voiceover? It's not one of the regular folk.
Ghostbusters frozen empire brought me here
*2019 anyone?* 😄💙❄
Snow
outta 2011 prequel
This movie is based on the 1938 sci-fi/horror novella "Who Goes There?" by American author John W. Campbell.👽🩸🧊
