Just a hunch, but I'm thinking you wouldn't want a police officer watching you 24/7, waiting for you to do something they perceive as illegal or disrespectful. Yet I'm sure you would want them to show up if you reported a home invasion and needed an ambulance.

Well technically, you would like to see the police to prioritize going after dangerous attackers rather than peaceful protesters, but Uvalde may have been a symptom of a growing problem with the quality of the US police in general than just some random fail.
