Took my 3.0 @ 50 with 24 years of service. I understand every situation is different but if you're in the Department and are eligible to leave, and can afford to, please do so ASAP. CDCR is a ticking time bomb that will go BOOM and unfortunately cost a staff member ( or more ) their lives. It's not sustainable and I do feel sorry for these newer Officers coming in blind to a set up. I have the utmost respect for you LT not only for having the courage to speak out on this incompetent administrations corruption but for walking away after 16 years after experiencing the worst firsthand. The county jails are doing 1170’s left and right now, guys doing YEARS in the county. Some of these guys are tapped in. They got these youngsters coming in that don’t understand convicts that have done more time in prison than some of these people have been alive. This “incarcerated persons” approach is dangerous, they are going to make the mistake of seeing an “incarcerated person” and not a convict. It’s very dangerous it’s a ticking time bomb.
Working for CDCR for over 10 years I can tell you a top CO 10 years ago was making 5 times minimum wage Vs now only 2.5 the retirement got slashed by 33% when you compare apples to apples if you go at 50 as a new CO hired after 2013 you only get 2.0 Vs OGs 3.0 so you have to work till 57 to get 2.5 regardless we make less then ten years ago and pension is 33% less, and CDCR demands more now. Why the union allowed to this and don’t do anything about it I don’t know maybe most union members are all OGs
Solid episode bro. After 21 years I'm punching out in just a few short months. I had the benefit of being trained by some solid old, hard veterans who took the time and it served me well. We had less staff back then due to less program. That meant the older staff needed you to be up to speed because he knew he may have to rely on you. Today due to A.I.M.S., Garbage managers etc. veteran officers have filtered to out of the way positions, leaving these youngsters to fend for them selves. All I can say to anyone new coming in is invest in your own training i.e. jiu-jitsu, hitting the gym etc. The dept will not train you to the level you need to be at, and if you are a gunner, get your fuckin feet off the panel and watch your staff. They rely on you, in many cases you are their only insurance against a really bad day.
I retired 11 years ago. Aint no way the officers are getting slapped. Seriously??? WTF!!! If an inmate even bumps you on purpose it's on!!!! I'd lose my mind in today's CDC
i remember my 1st day on the job delta yard hdsp control booth full program never had been in a control booth in my life, heck, didnt even know how to open the yard door. 1st watch dude abruptly woke up, let me in, didnt say a word and left. his movie was still playing on the computer! ZERO training in academy and ZERO training at institution. what a joke. for those CO's on this comment list, you know how demanding control booth is on 180 yards now.......and how much liability/responsibility it is to work one all alone up there with, sometimes, less than helpful floor cops who themselves just want to watch movies and not do anything (not all floor cops but definitely some) it took 6 months.....yes 6 months for a sargent to come up and "train" me on where the response keys are. those are pretty important! so yea, talk about downright dangerous
Good points. This applies to all law enforcement agencies in CA these days. Lack of training, learning domains in the academy teaching pronouns. The days of teaching to attack the threat are long gone. Dangerous times for anyone jumping into law enforcement
I did 28 years on the line! 10 on a level 4 yd 18 on a level 3 yd. And I do mean on the yard I wasn't on first watch I wasn't in the infirmary, ,front entrance, OP or in a tower. I was security 4 with Saturdays and Sundays off!! 3 months before I retired, I was still responding to code 3's. 49 years old still running!!! I was out running 20 and 30-year-olds. This new generation is in for a whole new CDCR, and I hope that they're ready for it. 3.0 at 50 28 years I made it to the end of the tunnel!!!

As a new boot my training comes from the OGS in a level 4 180 my partners safety comes first when I’m in a control both I always tell my self I’m proficient with my fire arm and if deadly force criteria is met I will cycle safety sights when I joined this department I was well aware of what I was getting into and I’m glad i found your videos and can put things into perspective I wanna do crt and I want to stay under the radar from supervisors lol working at the most active prison in the state sucks
I’m coming up on year 21 of my career in corrections and when I started I was proud of my job and had faith in my coworkers. Of course we had blue falcons, but nothing compared with today. I would definitely tell people to consider careers in corrections back then. Where corrections is today, I tell people to find something better to do with their life for work. Sure the pay is good; but if you don’t get stabbed by an inmate, you’ll get backstabbed by a coworker or the admin. Can’t even say inmates in my agency anymore….Anyone considering becoming a CO, think about what LT is saying and listen to him.

Hector, they're some solid fish cops out there. I work with them. on the flipside, they're some who walk around in "condition saranwrap". The problem is boys being raised by single moms. There, I said it. Same goes for the convicts. The difference is that the majority of the convicts learned to be men by living a hard life on the streets.
Trust me. As a Lieutenant I had the opportunity to talk to many inmates, and our complaints were the exact same thing! Lol People are getting killed as a result of incompetence and gross negligence.

Too many supervisors (Sgt's and LT's) letting their officers burn and not standing up for them when they used force within policy. It's like, once you pick up Captain, they drink the juice and believe in the California Model. It seems like if you're not at a pro staff institution, your supervisor's wont back you up even if you were right. I've worked at both type of prisons and i can see what your saying. But I also recognized the CDC’r officers’ it wasn’t looking pretty’ to me my thoughts as I’ve mentioned - the value of life’ a slow train 🚂 was in progress’ that the higher up’ I didn’t think valued CDC’r officers life? That as long as they where there to witness the crimes that was (the job) nothing more then a witness’ that’s there value!
