      question for ya about homebrew with GWM and the strength modifier of 1.5. Did a little bit of math but with this 2 combined they get a +8 to damage at say level 5 with a strength modifier of +4. At level 17 it would be a +14 to damage. Not a critic but just an observation was wondering if you notice this as well?

    It’s funny, you’re so excited all the time, I thought it was kind of your thing to draw people in. It’s not, you’re just that excited about making DnD better. I watch everything you put out now after being introduced to you through Treantmonk. I have played for over 20 years, but will be a first time DM in the next few months and am currently in the process of building my own world. You have assisted with that process more than you know. Keep up the good work and thank you for what you do. Happy Birthday!

    I use the Death Exhaustion rule to limit tub-thumping. Characters can try to recover one level of exhaustion during a long rest with a CON Save with the DC determined by their accommodation quality, making it more appealing to pony up extra for that Comfortable or Wealthy inn. I've toyed with adding a consumable to clear a single level of exhaustion, but I need to balance that against the fact it takes Greater Restoration, a 5th level spell, to remove a level of exhaustion.

    • @TheDungeonCoach
      @TheDungeonCoach  4 роки тому

      Yea they dont mess around with how to remove Exaustion, its ahrd core in RAW, part of why I think its so underused. I do like that death rule for this for sure!

    • @jelte3754
      @jelte3754 4 роки тому

      I'm thinking of using exhaustion at drop to 0 HP that can be recovered during a short rest in my games, similar to the DMG Chase rules

    • @LordOz3
      @LordOz3 4 роки тому

      I'm still balancing the recovery rate of levels of exhaustion. I definitely don't want to do all recovered per short rest. In fact, I like DC's suggestion for limiting short rests to 2 per day (I think it's from the PDF).
      Right now in my games it's a Save to recover one level during a long rest. If I introduce more ways to gain Exhaustion I might make recovering 1 automatic per long rest, and the Save to recover a second.
      As it stands now, if a PC gets to the point they think a hit could take them out, they'll call for heals, dodge, or chug a potion.

    OMG. So many good things again!! HOW DO YOU DO IT!? Well, I know how, you're pretty darn smart and have that awesome support from the Dungeon Crew and other patrons you bounce ideas off, but STILL. I continue to be amazed at how well mechanically your homebrews feel. I loved the Frost Checks, really look forward to reading about the different effects of blizzards, and the Dice Tower of Doom sounds amazing (and a nice alternative of Dice Bowl of Doom for online gaming).
    Also, Snow-vertime. Lol!
    One of the BIG things I did not like about Tomb of Annihilation was how easy it was for players to overcome the natural effects of the jungle. The module had tons of rules for getting lost, insects, disease, heat, rain, etc. And....the writers kinda totally forgot about magic and class abilities. My players and I kept laughing about how awesome and deadly the module would be if you ONLY brought in fighters and thieves. But any druids, rangers, barbarians, and heck, wizard type folk, just nerfed the hell out of all that fun environment stuff. Half the stuff wasn't really in effect once the players reached 2nd and 3rd level, and then by 4th it was laughable and we just ignored it.
    Your homebrews, like the Frost Checks, really allow the danger of the environment to still affect Mid-level and High-level players! Sure, they will have an easier time to overcome things (as they should), but the danger is still there. Love it.
    Thanks again for another tasty tasty homebrew!!

    Tip, if you've read through the brew and think it will be too tough, you can change the increases of "Frost check" modifiers and DC's to +4, +3 or only +2 for each level. It will be a little less daunting that way.
    Also keep in mind that the Frost check is actually a modified Constitution save, so you still treat it as a save :)

  • @PapaSmerf008

    One thing I learned after using the exhaustion on dropping to 0 for a while at my table... it encourages leaving the dying player down and finishing the fight since they won't be as useful with exhaustion. And I wanted that moment to feel more tense, so instead I now have sticky failed death saves.
    If you fail a death save, you keep them until you complete a long rest. Now if someone drops, the party is encouraged to heal them before they even start their turn. And even though they are just as effective after being healed, if they have any death save fails, the whole table will feel that tension.

      @@TheDungeonCoach I feel like exhaustion would be a lot better of a mechanic if there more ways to deal with it. Some of those impediments hit hard and it seems unfair to make players deal with it for multiple long rests as it slowly falls. Maybe you should open this idea up to your discord, it seems like a much better place to have this discussion

  • @totsytaylor

    Great work again Coach. Just an idea to think about... There are times when being exposed to or being trapped in really cold conditions can aid survival. It might increase tension for a party if one of their members was put into some sort of suspended animation at zero hit points. Perhaps the death saves can stretch to an hour, while the party try and create conditions for the one in the cold induced coma to come round. (I have written this before I've read your pdf, so sorry if you have already covered this.) Cheers again

    Hey Coach, I like your idea of Exhaustion death saves, but I think this kind of comes with a catch. Technically, when a player is restored to 1 HP after falling unconscious, it is done via magic. Like a potion, or a cure wounds, etc. In my mind, healing magic like that restores the body to its previous conditions, so they probably would not suffer any exhaustion. However, if someone is Stabilized as a result of a feat, ability, or use of a medicine check, I would agree with the exhaustion then. Because technically, they aren't healed, they just aren't dying either.

    • @TheDungeonCoach
      @TheDungeonCoach  4 роки тому

    Great video👍🏻 For the avalanche I feel like it would make more sense if it was 2D10 bludgeoning damage instead of cold damage. In addition, a character becomes restrained and they can’t breathe beginning some sort of skill challenge or maybe use timer dice to illustrate how long the companion heroes who weren’t trapped have to dig out and rescue their compatriots. That would give it a more realistic feel to what we all have been told happens during an actual avalanche.

    • @TheDungeonCoach
      @TheDungeonCoach  4 роки тому +1

      I see the bludgeoning from the IMPACT, so very true
      I originally was going to have repeated damage per round but felt it was too much to that’s probably why it’s still cold, I’d totally go bludge now

    To survive a real-world avalanche, I learned the the instructor of the wilderness survival class I took back in the 1980's, that is there's no way to get out of the path of an avalanche, stand with your back to the avalanche, cover your mouth & nose with a cloth of some kind so you don't breathe in any snow dust, and angle you head forward so that the force of the avalanche can't trip you backward, and so your head will be closer to the surface. And you should also try to keep your hands close enough to your face to form an air pocket as the snow piles around you.

    This brings to mind this combo. All that weather gear (base+fur+blubber) + the ring of warmth. The base gives you a +15 to frost checks of -20*C. The ring of warmth makes you immune to -45*C (DC 20 frost checks) and gives you resistance (+5). What happens if your wearing all that? Do you basically get a base 20(ring) +5(resist) +15(clothing) = 40 frost check? Making you basically immune to the cold?
    The average temperature of Icewind dale is -45*C. The max being on how colder it can get being around 80 factoring in only temperature change. Adding other weather mechanics would be around -105*C ish?

    I’d like to see what else you do with exhaustion. I also think it’s an under used mechanic. I have a homebrew ranger spell to help exhaustion. I have a homebrew warlock sub class that suffers exhaustion. I’m planning to lead my campaign into the desert, and I will adapt some of your cold homebrew for hot homebrew.

    Love the Frost Checks in your home brew but have a question. How often should I ask the players to roll these? The typical roll once an hour for exposure listed in RotFM seems excessive. I’m thinking dawn, dusk, midnight and whenever a weather event warrants it (or when other events like falling in freezing water happens).

    • @TheDungeonCoach
      @TheDungeonCoach  3 роки тому

      I have that all flushed out in the PDF, BUT
      I would ask for one every night AT MID NIGHT👌🏼
      Ever hour seems draining and excessive! So I do it every night at midnight and ANY time a large moment happens that would make them cold! Like falli in ice etc

    I love all your homebrew man, and see that you mentioned homebrewing Polar Bears. I was severely disappointed with what icewindale did with their polar owlbear, any chance you'll do a homebrew on that? Literally all the book says is use the original owlbear and give them cold resistance and something else that wasn't anything special that i already forgot about.

  • @ChrisWillhelm

    You should check out the Scholar from Adventures in Middle Earth 5e. The class has a feature called healers hands which make them a bit of a mundane healer, but at level 9 they can remove exhaustions by spending healing hands dice. Might be cool to homebrew something like that as a class feature reward.

      Yea once I homebrew it, its separated from that line in the book, or else there would only ever be on DC of temperature. Hey Coach! I recently purchased your guide on DMs guild. Fantastic stuff, will def be using for my campaign. I wanted to ask your opinion on where PCs can purchase the gear. Should it be anywhere? Maybe some places, esp. the more north they go? How about in the Dale itself, I'm thinking there should be no problem finding and buying the gear there as long as they have the coin? Reason I'm asking is because the hook for my campaign is the party is being sent on an expedition north by local guilds of Neverwinter, per pressure from the Lord's Alliance, to investigate the extended winter. I want to set it up in a way where they perhaps have a pool of money and from that can buy some gear, and then perhaps that can be a catalyst to accepting some of those initial quests when they get there, i.e. money to get more geared up. But I realize this may be a catch 22 of sorts, you need the gear for the quests, but you need the money to buy the gear. Any advice or thoughts?
