Andrew Latimer, one of the best melodic guitarist of all time. Some of his live performances send shivers down my spine.

      A.Latimer, S.Hackett, S.Rothery, D.Gilmour and M.Oldfield.
Hard pressed to find a better sounding, tasteful, original, melodic guitar player than these.
Oh Steve Vai? Sorry, I said tasteful :P
Just kidding, for each his own.

This whole album is beautiful, and closer to classical music in terms of theme and overall structure. And like others have said, it's intended to be heard as one continuous piece of music. :)

Love both Snow goose and Moonmadness. In reference to the Trespass album, you would love Anthony Phillips Geese and the ghost album! Pastoral beauty with both Phil and Mike from his old band.

As I have said earlier, when I listened for the first time to this album I realized - while listening - that it tells the same story as the movie The Snow Goose I had seen a couple of years before. That tells something about the power of the musical storytelling of this album. Especially the next 2 songs made me realize this back in the 70's.

The album is pure.I play it often and get emotional with its beauty. Yeah, then I break out Moonmadness and get my rock licks from Latimer.

When you said that you could just sit and listen to this in one go it took me all the way back to when I bought this album, not long married, had moved out of parents houses and into our one bedroom flat and didn't have a tv for years. We used to sit around in the evenings listening to music like this, peaceful and just a little bit magic. Reading the book that inspired the album of course. (OK, maybe not at the same time as listening to the record but it least meant that we knew who Rhayader was and how he related to the Snow Goose - It's a beautiful book BTW and well worth a read if books are your thing) ... Thanks for the memories.

    You've made my day butty.
Camel are just superb imho. ❤️
Sanctuary, that acoustic guitar Justin.. Beautiful.
And then Fritha, with them stunning keyboards.. Ok reminds me of Mr. Oldfield, at his best. And, yes, i get the essence of Trespass by Genesis too butty. 😊
    Gorgeous track.
And then The Snow Goose.. That guitar melody us just sublime... Oh my god.. Andy Latimer is an absolute genius.
So much depth, and feel in his hands.. What a track this is Justin.
    What a three some butty.❤️
    Totally blown away by this.
Great choice Justin.. Absolutely awesome butty

One of my favourite albums. I was especially into instrumentals at that time and when I got this I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I went on to buy all their catalogue and there is so much great band music. Camel always had a band that played as a band should, each supporting the other in service to the song, great parts that make a greater whole.

Qué bien escogiste esta sección de TSG...Probablemente lo que más me gusta de Camel y una de mis favoritas de toda la historia del Prog Rock. Pasaron décadas y aún hoy vuelvo a ella a menudo. Andy Latimer le pone un sentimiento a sus interpretaciones que lo hace único e irrepetible. Siempre grandes, Camel.

Excellent choice! I think your appreciation of this fine work is on target, Andrew Latimer plays like liquid silver is flowing through his fingers. Just beautiful. Also you are spot on about Peter Bardens being a great musical foil for Latimer. RIP Peter. The last time I had the opportunity to see Camel was 2002 at NEARfest. I really hope for another chance to see them in concert some day before it is too late. Andrew did have some major health issues. They have done a show in the UK in 2018 released on DVD "Live At The Royal Albert Hall." Playing keyboards on this show was the wonderful Peter Jones of Tiger Moth Tales and Red Bazar. Camel's catalogue is well worth further exploration. Also their " Canterbury cousins" Caravan have some great music. I would recommend reacting to "For Richard" and " "Nine Feet Underground." The two bands at one time appeared to be interchanging members to the point they were being laughingly referred to as "Caramel."

Hello, Justin. Dave again from the UK. Another CD in my collection and this is a beautiful passage from it. Andy Latimer is such a lyrical, melodic guitarist. You may know that the current keyboardist and woodwind player in Camel is Pete Jones, who records solo under the name Tiger Moth Tales. His album The Depths of Winter is excellent and seasonal. He has a great voice, a bit like a cross between Gabriel and Collins, and plays a mean guitar, and his material is influenced by the likes of Genesis (maybe too much at times). Favourite track - Take the Memory - is about the passing of his partner's guide dog (maybe I should have mentioned that Pete too is unsighted).

Two songs for a cold winters day:
Gordon Lightfoot: Song for a Winter's Night
Bruce Cockburn (pronounced Coe-burn): Coldest Night of the Year

Truly revives something in us. Great video sir

It's interesting that you mention Trespass. Anthony Phillips' (guitarist on Trespass as you know) first solo album (composed and largely recorded well before 1975) is titled, The Geese and the Ghost. The final track is a lovely pastoral instrumental titled, Sleepfall: the Geese Fly West.
Now, about the story in the liner notes, the prose that accompanies the tone poems; this has been done a few times by other artists. Genesis with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow, Steve Hackett's Metamorpheus, and to a certain extent, Mike Rutherford's Smallcreep's Day which, like The Snow Goose, is based on a novel. It's a multi-media artform I like.
This was my introduction to Camel, which makes no sense what with me being a child of the Seventies, but there just aren't enough dollars and hours in the day to know everything, you know? I'm thinking, though, it might not be too late...
Thanks for another great review, Justin. And I still want you to consider giving City Boy another try with Interrupted Melody...

Have a listen to the recent concert 2018 from the Royal Albert Hall. ( available on Bluray - or YT). Different line up except for Latimer and Colin Bass who joined at the end of the 70s but the addition of Peter Jones on keys has added a great singer to the group and rectified the vocal issue which even the staunchest fans would probably admit has been their Achilles heal. We have lost all too many of the great musicians that played with this band but that concert was a great swan song.

    Hi JP,
First of all I want to congratulate you for your channel and above all for your comments always so elaborate and accurate, revealing someone with knowledge in the area and obviously with a good ear and great taste.
For someone still so young, I appreciate your openness and the emotion you show when listening to great bands from other times, which it doesn't always happen with people of your generation, more focused on more contemporary sounds.
That fact reveals a great maturity on your part.
I was pleasantly surprised by your comments regarding the albums "Encantations" by Mike Oldfield and "Snow Goose" by Camel, two of the albums of my life.
Regarding the work of Camel, there is an album off this band, that has passed alongside its history and labeled as a minor work by the band.
In my humble opinion, something unfairly because I consider it a great album and for that reason I strongly recommend your hearing, I refer to the album "NUDE".
Another band that I highly recommend your audition, is Echo & the Bunnymen, (Albuns; Porcupine, Heaven up here, Ocean Rain).
Being a proud Portuguese, I would like to suggest that you listen to some of my country's good music.
The project that I will recommend to you no longer exists (Setima Legião), this band marked the scene of Portuguese music in the 80s and 90s
    Setima Legiao (ua-cam.com/video/w1oT8lD73fQ/v-deo.html)

I really enjoy Camel for those mellow moods, to get lost in the instrumental. More of my youth, love it. I do not know if you realize what I am about to say but one of the all time Hard rock gods of guitar died today. Along with bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep there was a band out of my area of the world, Mountain who created some of the most classic heavy riffs, killer live band with a thunderous rhythm section that set the wheels moving into the Hard Rock and later the Heavy Metal genre. Leslie West had such a unique sound, both singing and playing lead. Gravelly vocals, killer blues riffs and well I was hoping you could do a tribute to him by reviewing one of their songs. Nantucket Sleigh ride, Mississippi Queen and Never in My Life are in a nut shell Leslie West at his and Mountain's best.

The album was inspired by a story by Paul Gallico set in 1940 in the Second World War when British soldiers were stranded in France and were rescued by a fleet of fishing boats. (It was weird to see a war memorial in Washington give the dates of the war as starting in 1941.)

The first album I listened to, halfway the 1970’s, and I immediately became a fan. The other albums that we’re and came out followed.
Stationary Traveler from 1984 was the last album I bought. My taste shifted a bit more in the direction of heavy metal (Iron Maiden) as well as to synthesizer and New Age music (Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream).
I still love Camel and listen to it a few times a year. So melodic and emotional music.
The music is revisited by Andrew and band in the nineties with albums like Never let Go, Coming of Age.

I love the way it flows and this section might even be my favourite part. Gives me goose bumps! 🤣 Anyway Latimer has a way of playing I absolutely love. Laidback in a way but he sure hits the right notes! But the drums have a really nice role here too, not overdone but just right. Too bad you cut it up. I always play albums in full and this album certainly fills the need to do so!

Good call on the "beach" sound that you picked up on, as the story is set on the southern coast of England. I wanted you to keep going, since this is one of my favorite albums. I once mentioned it on Twitter, and will do so again; since you enjoy instrumentals that feature guitar work with long sustained notes, have a listen to "The Steppes" by Steve Hackett. One of his best.

    On to something there!
I discovered Camel only a few years ago. And while they might not belong to the absolute A-League of classic prog acts, this album and especially 'Moonmadness' (hope I rember the title correctly) are really worthwhile.
Lots of other tracks worth discovering throughout their discography :-)

All progressive rock is rooted in classical music. Longer pieces, thematic, with many transitions from soft to dramatic. And only great musicians need apply. This album is a good example of that,

Justin - Just been to check the sleeve of my album, but there are no such explanatory sleeve notes on mine. However, mine is one of the later ones with ‘ Music Inspired by ‘ added to the sleeve to placate Paul Gallico, who was threatening to sue them for copyright infingement. So maybe mine didn’t have them, if the notes were from (or inspired by) the novel.
This was the second Camel album I bought, back in about 1974. Mirage was the first. I still play both, of course! In fact, I shall play it now, just because I can!

Yes, hard to stop playing the album. Latimer and Bardens are a perfect team here. Beautiful melodies and arrangements. Bardens had a gift for making synths warm and inviting.
The rhythm section of Ward and Ferguson also provides what is perfect for the song.
Not lyrics. The album is "inspired by" the book. A lawsuit by the author necessitated changing the title. The record company was appalled the album had no vocals with lyrics.

All those albums are great that you refer to - for some reason the critics were really won over more by 'Snow Goose.' I dig them all - saw them live in '78 I think - and they played Snow Goose and I think they did not play 'Lady Fantasy.' This is the kind of thoughtful prog that I feel somehow is non-existent in the so-called prog by better known North American bands - ( - - - - - - , - - - - , - - - - , and - - - - - - - - - ).

Odd one this. Looking at album info, 16 tracks, lots very short, and do they all meld into one like this? I believe it was themed on a book, but sounds more like it could be a soundtrack for film or tv, Incidental music. It was ok, I'm sure they're fine musicians, but it just didn't seem to go anywhere. Even as chill music, you'd probably forget it was on after a few minutes. Like the ticking clock in the room you don't register until you look up and see it.
