Nurses Whispering Verses is actually an old Cardiacs song, a shorter version of which without the ambient section at the end was originally recorded for their Toy World album, released in 1981. It was recorded again in a slightly more polished from for the following album, The Seaside. Heresy to suggest skipping the long outro, though. The bit where the pitch slides at the end is wonderfully trippy.

You should react to more Cardiacs!! The more you'll experience them, the more you'll appreciate them and eventually you'll love them, it's almost inevitable after seeing you both show such appreciation in the outro of the video.
I'd recommend the album "On Land and in the Sea.

Yep, and I'd second that recommendation. That, or 'Guns.' 🤘

Cardiacs is one of those bands where any of their albums could be my favourite on any particular day. It's all just so good.

What a joy it's been to experience this album anew with you fine gentlemen. Your graciousness and curiosity throughout the journey has been truly heartening to see. Here's hoping someone a bit more flush than I can stump up the readies for another album request!

I watch a lot of reactions - especially my mates from deptford Cardiacs from back in the late 80s. you guys are exactly what youtube needs: honest, open acceptance (which is which timmy wanted btw). You were thrown in at the deep end of the pond here with SIng to God. Time to relax and go and listen to A little man and a house, and the whole world window'. there are lots of bands , but get through these guys first and you're mind will be more open. he heh = you have so much fun ahead

Loved your reaction to the album. The confused on edge feeling from the first to that moment when it clicked and the first smile. Now go back and listen again and then look at the live performances on youtube. RIP Tim,

Hello! Thank you for this, it's been fun to watch you both try (with more success than some people I know!) to wrap your brains around Cardiacs. Especially this great album - you have been thrown in at the deep end of the pond. I agree with those who are saying that once you "tune in" it's well worth listening again. (I was slightly astonished when you said that Side 3 was catchier and easier to get into than Side 1, because for my money there's nothing catchier or more singalong than Dog-Like Sparky.) Anyway, thanks again for your open ears and open minds. I hope you do listen to more Cardiacs. Some of their earlier repertoire sounds quite different - a lot more saxophone, for one thing! - and I think you'd have fun with it. Cheers!

Thanks for doing this! There's nothing a Cardiacs fan likes better than to see this music gradually click with another person.
It must be incredibly uncomfortable during those long outros, being hyper-aware that you're on camera and just wanting it to stop so you can discuss the main body of the song, but I hope you've been able to listen again by yourselves since then. For me, at least, those are areas where I just sink into all those tones and textures and I don't care how long they are, or even feel like they are long, so I hope you've been able to experience that too.

RIP Tim Smith. Music is lost without you. You are now fans for life. I hope this brings the joy to more people. Well done. Check out R.E.S, This is the life, all his geese are swans. Some of the best music ever made.

This was an absolutely great journey! It was seriously such a thrill to see you guys warm up to this sound. Got me to subscribe, and I am 100% going to be requesting another Cardiacs album for you to go through, after this one digests a bit of course.
Edit 2: It doesn't seem like they take album requests anymore. Just missed it. Oh well. Disregard the next paragraph.
Speaking of which, Cardiacs fans in the comments, I would love you to chime in on what I should request. I'm torn between On Land, Little Man, and Marenest (video). Tell me if I'm missing a better option though. Edit: It'll be Little Man. Thanks for the feedback. I'll be putting in the request next Monday.

I can't decide either. On one hand ALM is easier to get into (in my opinion), but also On Land has The Everso Closely Guarded Line. I think overall though I'm leaning more towards ALM (but if they like that, maybe also try On Land once they have had time to digest it)

    • @runciblemoon1194
      @runciblemoon1194 2 роки тому +4

I'd be leaning towards "A Little Man". There's nowt wrong with "On Land" (literally, not a note out of place), but "A Little Man" feels like such a cohesive journey of an album. It's the perfect intro to the classic lineup.

I'm rather partial to The Seaside. It show where they developed from and has some great tunes like Hope Day, R.E.S. and the catchy Gina Lollobrigida.

I would go with 'Guns' an underrated, even by many Cardiacs fans, masterpiece which has many hooks to make it appealing whilst still being all Cardiacs. Otherwise I would go with ALMaaHatWWW, which is their early masterpiece for me. I'm still getting to grips with OLaitS!

Mainly because it has *The Everso Closely Guarded Line* , I'd go with On Land and in the Sea, but maybe the thing to do is ask them to watch _Paolo Sala's_ cover of it, offline, and get back to you with a yes or no to, "Would you listen to it again? " If no, I think maybe A Little Man and His House would be better. Maresnest, I think is probably a step too far, right now. Also it's more fun to listen to if you know at least some of the songs already. (In the very long run, though, I think Maresnest has more More, and everything.)
      Here's Paolo's cover, anyway (nearly forgot) : ua-cam.com/video/DtB4tEAesgA/v-deo.html

Always thought the outro of Nurses Whispering Verses was a great touch to segue into the last song. It matches the vibe, being trippy and space-y.

Cardiacs fans are a lovely, welcoming bunch- welcome to the pond! Rather than a magic eye band, they are perhaps a third eye band. Consider the enlarged eyes of the band members on the cover of 'Sing to God' and their yet to be completed final album's title 'LSD', an unambiguous statement of one of the band's inspirations. It is likely this final album will be completed one day. Before Tim Smith's heart attack which disabled him, the instrumental parts of LSD were complete and Jim Smith, bassist and Tim's brother and Kavus Torabi their latter day second guitarist have been heavily hinting that work is underway to finish it. Exciting times for us fans.

A foundling is an orphan (the kind of orphan that gets left in a basket on your doorstep, I think). Now you're probably remembering _A History of Tom Jones, Foundling_ ?
And yes, at the end you go up, then you come down, then you find rest all at sea with the ghost of some lady who's warm. It says welcome back home.

I absolutely love all this album but I think especially Dirty Boy and Nurses Whispering Verses are amongst the best rock songs ever written. I understand why Cardiacs called themselves pop though, I hear a warped about and sped up version of Kinks and Beatles, punk, prog, church hyms and circus music. So quirky and melodic and weird and trippy.

You did so well guys. You're great! I've been watching all the four parts. Funny thing, I love like 10 Cardiacs songs and don't like the others at all. Among these tens are Nurses Whispering Verses, Buds and Spawn (radio version) and Sleep All Eyes Open. Thanks again, great show!

I was listening to your reviews very attentively, and I got the impression that you might like their following album Guns (1999) even better. Also, considering your favorite from the album (Nurses Whispering Verses) is actually way older than the rest of the tracks here, you might love their older albums, like The Seaside (1983).

If you want a 10 minute Cardiacs song that does go weird, listen to 'The Everso Closely Guarded Line'
Also my friend makes music a lot like this too and itd be cool if you check her out!
she has an album called 'Autonomous Frenzy' under the name Twilight Therapy

A fantastic and fair-minded review! The analogy of impressionist art gradually revealing itself is spot on, and the best description I’ve heard. I’d highly recommend listening to side 1 again, but this time in the background, and just let the gorgeous hooks, melodies and bridges seep in. Cardiacs managed to become beloved while never trying to be, and that’s why we adore them

Well done for doing this, please in your own time revisit this until it properly ‘clicks’ with you. Dirty Boy especially is such a treat to sit down and have an eargasm to after a shitty day.

Thanks again for taking the time to dive head first into Cardiacs' deliriously glorious world, full-blast into the murky waters that hide colors your ears have never seen before. From here, go to 'Guns,' or 'On Land And In The Sea.' Trust me. For now, ignore those telling you 'A Little Man And A House And The Whole World Window' is the logical next step. It's great, it's Cardiacs, but I'm afraid the albums I mentioned above better represent Cardiacs' peaks, alongside the epic you've just witnessed, being 'Sing To God.' Tell me a more truly psychedelic album than 'Guns' exists, and then prove it to me. And 'On Land And In The Sea' is a perfect album from head to toe by a 27-year-old Tim Smith burning brightly at the top of his game, all around. See you guys later in The Pond. Welcome!!! ❤

Great again guys, fantastic! Once the dust has settled I’d strongly recommend On Land and In The Sea to review, for me it’s their best, just ahead of A Little Man and contains their magnum opus The Everso Closely Guarded Line, the whole album is wonderful and a pop masterpiece
