- During my trip to China in Dec, I tried Baidu’s Apollo Go RoboTaxi, an autonomous driverless taxi, during the busy evening rush hour. It was truly impressive, but I feel there’s still a long way to go before ride-hailing drivers face unemployment. So, Uber and Grab drivers, no worries.
There was no one in the driver’s seat, the steering wheel turned on its own, the route was displayed in real-time, and the screen showed road conditions and detected nearby vehicles-absolutely brimming with a sense of futuristic high-tech. Despite the heavy traffic during rush hour, the self-driving taxi handled safety without any issues.
However, I did encounter some odd situations during the ride. Possibly due to poor road conditions, the driving performance was average-braking and starting were a bit abrupt. At intersections, the car was overly cautious, waiting too long and causing a few RoboTaxis to get stuck together at the junction. A 1.4-kilometer journey took 27 minutes. If you’re commuting to work, this might not be the car to call, at least not at this stage.
Interestingly, the doors could be opened while the car was moving.
Overall, it was a novel experience that sparks the imagination for the future.
