Same! I've always said the smaller trucks are so much more reliable than the full sized trucks and more fun to drive! The Dakota has always been my favorite out of the 3. Mainly cuz you don't see people doing much with them all that much. I see lots of s-10s and rangers but hardly any Dakota's. Everyone I talk to say they wouldn't want one but I try to tell them you find one with a 5speed and they are damn near bullet proof lol
This vid was for me. Had 3 of these with varying engines. All manuals. I will call it now the 4.7 is going to fail with 3rd gear. It starts slow with higher temps. The other engines are hard to kill. Love these trucks.
I got the 3.9v6 auto in the 4x4 single cab and i love it but i wish i had more power lol. It costs me nothing to own so i may just keep it till i have enough money to do a nice 5.9 charger swap or a diesel swap

So when is the hellcat swap and TR6060 coming? My 98 sport was a 5.2 with the NV3500HD. It’s now a 390 stroker, Torqstorm supercharger, 650 hp, ladder bars, roll cage, kirkeys lol. Never ends…
nother funny detail, in Brazil the R/T version came with the 316 5.2 V8 engine, without the cool wheels, nor the rear view mirrors or sport bumpers, it never came with the 360 5.9 engine, only the Jeep Cherokee ZJ Limited came with the 360 5.9. 😑😑
@@Thisappaintreal So, we only received the Dakota with the 3.9 V6 and 5.2 V8 engine, and in the case of the Cherokee, only the WJ came with the 4.7 V8 engine. However, it's strange, because there were some Durangos that came with the 4.7 v8. I had a level 3A fully armored Durango. with the 4.7 engine, jezus how slow this car was due to the extra weight, and stopping it was another big problem hahaha
@@Thisappaintreal Mine was a black Durango SLT 2000. It had around 700lbs of 3A armor. I loved that car, No one tried to get in front of it, And the weight of the doors when closing could easily break a leg or arm.

You’re a very talented driver man, they’re just tough! I beat mine every single day, and I’ve found lifting the shifter up to third instead of shoving it is faster and almost go toward the glovebox more. The shift pattern is wiiiide! Love your vids man keep doing what you do!
I ordered one of these new in 2000. Wanted the V8 but they were very hard to get so I settled for a 5spd v6 magnum. These original 5spd v8 trucks are stupid rare. Oh....and I never missed a gear in mine😂

I have a set of 4.7 H.O. cams out of an 04 Grand Cherokee I’d be willing send. Direct bolt in, don’t need to upgrade valve springs but it’s recommended. No added lift, only more duration and they’re good for around 30 extra hp. Can also be reground possibly, Crower used to make hot cams for 4.7s but stopped

I am a pround owner of a 1988 Dodge Dakota Sport and its an absolute fun truck to drive. If you love the 2nd gen Dakota, you will definitely love the first gen. They can take a god damn beating and keep ticking.
Maaan you're making me miss my old Dakota. The 3.9 was a dog but reliable right up until I replaced it with a 5.2 magnum from a wrecked donor. Always wanted to put a manual behind it!
They’re easy to swap dude. You just have to make sure you ground the neutral safety switch, get the right clutch and flywheel kit, swap drill a notch for the new pilot bearing. Driveshaft length is about the same as a manual from an automatic. Pre bled slave cylinder is your friend. Need the manual and brake pedal which is just pulling a pin and sliding them in and sliding the old brake pedal off.
Love these motors, had an 02 ram with one. Theres not much aftermarket support for them, but if youre wanting to dig into it a bit more your only options are shorty headers and some "high output" parts from later gen 4.7s. They are possible to find but kind of hard, but look up "4.7 HO applications" and you can rip a set of cams and the intake manifold off a 08 jeep cherokee. Cams are a little more aggressive and the manifold flows better but thats about your maximum digging into these motors.
They’re trash for the most part that’s why there’s not much aftermarket support for them. They’re too over engineered from Mercedes and have a bunch of problems. Sounds like you’re one of the lucky ones that didn’t get the assortment of problems they have. The 318 and 360 outrun them by a long shot.
@@jonkern2325 for sure, these things were built to either last 60k miles or 260k miles was literally just up to luck. Hell I had mine for 9 years and got rid of it with almost 200k on it and for the 80k I put on it it was burning a quart 10w30 full syn every couple weeks but still ran like a champ
I had this exact same configuration truck, so I know how tuff that 2-3 can be. But when it I got it right, the truck ran consistent 14's in the 1/4. Lots of fun.
Very cool, and nice truck! I recently became the owner of the other unicorn Dakota, a 2002 4.7L 5-speed 4x4 double-cab. Just refurbished the front suspension and I think I'll be doing something similar with the exhaust. Great work.
I had a quad cab one with the 4.7 auto trans and I thought it was a fun little truck too. Mine was pretty ratbagged but I still regret selling it. Gonna have to buy another one with the 5 speed manual this time lol
I had this truck in the Bright Blue. I also added the RT rims and suspension. I loved that truck. Blew head gasket at 240k. I sold it as is because I don’t have time to fix it. Bought another Dakota. I didn’t realize how scarce the 5 speed trucks are. I miss that truck so much!!!

My old 2003 4.7/5spd with 3.92s would run 14.9s regularly on street tires and just 14.7s with stickies. Was an awesome 1/8th mile and stop light truck. Just fell on its face on the top end. Still my favorite truck i ever owned
was hoping for an equal length exhaust but still sounds good lol if you wanna actually do any performance stuff, you can get some HO or 07/08+ 4.7 cams, and either a HO or 08+ intake manifold and HO throttle body, and some headers. should be able to come close to around 300hp

In 2002-03 my grandfather had a silver quad cab 4.7/5 spd sport. Was a badass truck back then. For a guy in his mid 70s we had a blast in that truck.
That was a factory option for sure my dad had. 4.7 with the 5 speed I loved that truck

I have a 99 Dakota Sport 4x4 in Intense Pearl Blue that had the 318 but recently swapped in a 360 from a ‘00 Ram 1500, such a fun truck!

My cousin got an old Napa truck v6 5speed dakota. 318 v8 bolted right up to the 5 speed manifold lined right up as well. She ripped.
Try some Valvoline Synchromesh. Worked wonders on my notchy Tremec.

Do a small port and polish to the throttle body and I take manifold and just a nice little tune with good fuel.

was hoping for an equal length exhaust but still sounds good lol
if you wanna actually do any performance stuff, you can get some HO or 07/08+ 4.7 cams, and either a HO or 08+ intake manifold and HO throttle body, and some headers. should be able to come close to around 300hp
