Jack was actually a good character. Being gay was just a detail of his character not all his character consisted of.

Plus, John Barrowman was very well cast. It sounds like they cast Gatwa very quickly, without taking the time to screentest him and whatnot. And he didn't have that much experience. He'd been part of the ensemble on the Sex Education streaming series, but he's never starred in a proper tv show before.

As a gay man, I can say, this was absolutely not made for me either! I certainly won't be watching. Nobody, gay or straight, asked for or wanted any of this trash. Living in California, I've worked with gay people all of my life, and I cannot recall once, EVER any of them wanting more gay people on shows. They always talked about character dialogue and script writing like we straight people do.
This diversity crap is something that I can't recall ever hearing someone advocate in person, which means that these actors and producers are totally out of touch with normal people, gay or straight.

@@blockmasterscott As a gay person, I can confirm I tend to avoid shows that focus heavily on romance in general because I tend to hate how shows where it's the primary focus handles it. Plot and/or action are more of my bread and butter.
If you turn a popular mainstream show into an LGBT show you cannot expect to keep your mainstream audience.
My husband and I have said the same thing about the 80s for years now. The real privilege was actually being around to see when nobody gave a shit about your sexuality or your race.

It started before that. The first to use this tactic was Ghostbusters 2016. Every woke trash since has followed that same tactic. It's like marketing firms are doing it mistakenly thinking controversy sells not realizing that doesn't work when people realize that's your goal.

He started out playing roles and putting his all into it and keeping quiet on issues as he built his name. Now all he does is virtue signal and pushes the LGBT stuff etc. Part of me feels a little sorry for him. He is trapped in world where if he does not do this, he will be cancelled or pushed out, passed over for work in favour of someone who will say these things. So their theory is 3000 pronoun people will come watch, but that can't happen, because they are such a tiny minority the most they could get would be 800. 1000 - 800 is a loss of 200 viewers.

As a gay guy who never had interest in Doctor Who, despite me watching Clownfish videos about it, I can honestly say that just adding a gay character isn’t really enough of a reason to get me to watch something that I already have no interest in.
I also find it funny that they are constantly using the diversity card but then they had cancelled stuff like Owl House which was a good cartoon with a lot of diversity that was well like.

Per Overlord DVD leaks: 50k viewership on Dr. Who on Disney+ ...with a 70% tuning out at random spots during the show. Meaning only 15k people stayed with it until the end. Wonder how many were just asleep.

That channel is unreliable to say the least to be fair.
I used to do that when I had a t.v. Just leave it on in the background while I was doing housework/reading a book/doing something on the comp. I most definitely wasn't watching sht like Loose Women (UK version of The View).
Same with that article that claimed the 2.6M numbers weren't reflective because IPlayer had it on for 18 hours before BBC. What they left out was it aired from midnight so most would've been asleep then gone to work so I doubt those figures added much.
Folks, do not watch or support people who openly hate you. If this show isn’t made for you, don’t watch. Screw these people.
When I was a kid the only guys I knew who were into Dr. Who weren't exactly the kind of guys who were going to look out the window and say "Oh my GOD, it's JUST TOO BEAUTIFUL OUTSIDE to stay indoors and watch Dr. Who!"

the rumour going around the disney numbers for the two new episodes was around 52 thousand which if true is appalling.

To sum it up almost 80% of the people who bothered to turn the show on turned it off before it was finished, and they did so consistently during the episode. There was no single "they clearly didn't like this moment", it was a "They don't like this at all" kind of report.

Stopped watching him when Jody was announced!! Was a fan for over 40 yrs! They say they can replace the old fans, I accepted that challenge. Let’s see if they can replace us!! This reminds me of "Sherlock". It got weirder, and weirder and the scripts deteriorated in quality to the point where no one cared anymore.

Why aren't studios figuring out by now that they should be telling their actors, "stop talking about social issues in your interviews and just promote the show as something entertaining to watch." It would solve like 90% of their self-inflicted viewership issues.
The studios are probably telling the celebs to get out there and talk up the DEI stuff because Blackrock has mandated that they push it. When so many companies are doing something that the actual people hate, then rest assured, someone is behind the scenes pulling the strings.
They don't have that much control over the actors. We the audience associate actors and directors with studios but to these people, they are just gig employees who work for a few weeks or months and move on.
Because they are getting money from other people, whether it is investment firms or in this case, the tax payers. Otherwise, you can be sure they would have wised up much more quickly... unless you're Disney, of course.

Jake Harkness was a good character who was gay, but that wasn't all he was. He was a good character first, played by an extremely charismatic actor, who was interesting before we found his sexuality. Captain Jack wasn't gay he was bisexual (or even omni-sexual, he'd screw anything). But you're right that he was an interesting character who had a very open & progressive opinion about acceptable sexual partners. His sexual adventures were just a side story that you glimpsed every now and then, they weren't the only thing he had to talk about.

Re the 80s actually being more diverse- 1980s films have long struck me as having been very international. I mean, there were lots of movies that took place at least partly in Africa, South America, and Asia, such as the Indiana Jones movies, Romancing the Stone and its sequel, Out of Africa, The Gods Must Be Crazy, The Emerald Forest, Volunteers, Octopussy, Gandhi, The Last Emperor, etc. And as you say there were major black stars. Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop is still popular, besides having been very influential on the cop film genre.

It's like the Little Britain - USA version of Dr. Who. There's a recurring character who's entire identity is being "The Only Gay In The Village" and obsessing on that fact. It's wonderfully satirical. Nobody cares. But he's always bringing it up and it puts everyone off.

It’s their own fault. Imagine watching the 2005th Doctor Who and discovering the character, watching him evolve; only to see them undo everything about him.
They actively chased off the show’s established audience. It’s another franchise Disney is destroying AGAIN. It’s gone from “Doctor Who” to “Doctor Why Bother watching” since it was revealed by the few people who chose to watch all seem to agree it was hot garbage.
We won't know the ratings....until Disney doesn't renew for a 3rd season...then we'll know they were awful.
I never watched Dr. Who, but it's always sad to see a franchise hijacked by activists.

It’s one thing to have a diverse cast. It’s another thing to be preachy about new era ways of thinking as if they’re fact, another thing to be condescending about it, and another thing to chase after a new audience by changing everything at the expense of the one audience you’ve had the whole time.
These people don’t think and they also can’t see patterns for some reason
You know, the more i see all these issues, the more i realise how small this demographic truly is. In fact, it isn't just small, but likely is that part of it doesn't even want anything to do with the attempts at ideas that these people in the media are trying to push for, it just doesn't benefit them in the way the media believe it does.
In the end a lot of this has just made the rejection way worst, i doubt it has benefited at all any of the people they are supposedly supporting and representing.
I like how they make things that alienate tons of people and make a very niche show to a small demographic that doesn't identify with 90% of the population and call others bigots
