    As an European, I'm always amazed by New World's nature. We have few similar 'spots', but nothing in comparison to 'your' scale! It's so big, vast and beautiful! Thank you so much for capturing and sharing that amazing beauty !! I had fracture of the same foot bone (actually heard a crack). It's healing really, really long. So be safe, take care and enjoy every minute on trail :)

    Enjoyed the video. That was Jacks peak you were on in the burro mountains. Silver city was my home town. The mine you passed was Tyrone copper mine. No not a pretty site but if not for it or all the others you would not be making videos or I watching them. My dad worked there for twenty five years and I one when I was first out of school. Trek on brother.

    Glad to see you back on the trail. You were smart to listen to your body in time rather than push on and make the injury worse. 'A stitch in time' and all that. I know it would give me a really hard time to be so full of eager energy to get out there and hike and enjoy it all and instead have to be patient and nerve wrecked worrying if the injury would heal in time.

    Fantastic landscape. Glad your feet (especially the right foot) are ready to be back on the trail. The water sources let me thank god for waterfilters. And Silver City sounds to me like adventure, saloons, whiskey and peacemakers from the wild, wild west. Wish you lots of fun while you're hiking. I think you could be smiling a bit more, like you did on the AT. All the best for you, Christian

    Happy to see you back on your feets! It is rare to see the desert in bloom. I'm glad you stop to look at the critters and crawlers too. Makes me miss the southwestern desert.

    Great suspense with your foot but damn I hope she gets better and holds up. You did a good job with different shots on this video. I really loved the shot with you walking past the camera and doing a funny turn around back at the camera. I laughed so hard, thanks for that. Onward to Canada my friend!

    Really glad your foot is doing OK... That was a close one. Weird "trail". What there is of it. I wonder how many people do this trail per year. Something for me to look up. Nothing like the PCT or the AT. You will most likely be alone much more than the others. Good luck and thanks for the great vids.

    Hey Apache! Glad to see you back on foot. Very scary how serious that was. I hope it's all good now, just keep your eye on it.
    The hike out there seems quite and lonely. I'm glad you're finding water and enjoy seeing what you see on the trail. Thank you.

    Still icing after 12+ days? Icing is for immediate post trauma swelling prevention. After that, basically the first 24 hours, heat is the treatment to facilitate healing. Of course all of that only applies to a soft tissue injury. If it is bone, as you thought, heat is still good, but only resting it, and probably casting it, will allow it to heal completely.

    Glad you're feeling better and that you're back on the trail! By the way, I'm curious about how you like that Outdoor Research hat - we sell them at the place I work at and one of my coworkers thinks that they're silly but they look plenty useful to me. I didn't realize that you could fasten them under your chin like you've been doing.

    Forgot to mention. That is some pretty country you're seeing. When you get up north of Colorado and you hit the dead-pan flats in Wyoming, the prickly pears get really small and hard to see in the sage. I don't know if it is a different species or just shortened by the wind by even worse winds, but it is rough stuff.

    So congrats on getting back out on the trail. Question: what is navigation like? Meaning, how do you get from point to point? Trail, markings, signs, compass? What's it like?

    Glad to see you are back on the trail. Looks like you captured a good video of those ants, which is us back in corporate america right now! What is the condition of the trail? How much bushwhacking or orienteering are you having to do? Looks like it's clear in some parts but not in others. Keep up the good work.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  9 років тому

      I'd say 70% of the trail so far has been cross country. Not necessarily bushwacking, since the desert is pretty sparse, but there is little to no trail. It's still easy to navigate, but definitely a change.

    I'm a bit of a latecomer, but enjoy your thru hike videos a lot. Thanks. You use an open sleep system (no tent); how are you not scared of snakes, scorpions, etc., especially innthe desert?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  8 років тому

      I've never had anything bother me. It's a possibility i suppose, but such a small one that it really isn't a concern.

  • @vincentmiceli2554

    The CDT looks slightly less crowded than the AT. And slightly less blazes, too. It seems if you do not have a compass, you are in a world of hurt.

  • @ryanpatrick1189

    Thanks for posting the video! I'm curious, without having a defined trail to follow, are you using a map & compass or?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  9 років тому +1

      I'm using a map and compass, but there are also trail signs occasionally to hike towards. So far it has been fairly straightforward, though I do sometimes off trail a bit.

    Joe...I purchased the same camera/video setup that you use. Do you use the front facing camera or the rear camera? Front camera has better image quality but you can't see what your filming while the rear facing camera allows you to see what your filming but has much lower quality. How do you do it?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  9 років тому

      Do you mean the iPhone? The rear facing camera should be much better quality than the front (selfie) camera. I shoot with the filmic app using the camera on the backside of the phone.

    some of my friends in the army have stress fractures and as far as i know it takes a lot of time to heal (months) and you need full rest eat well and sleep well ( which never happens on trail or in the military) so most people suck it up and continue with it.

    So sorry you had such a long recovery. Please say it was enough. Wild cows! How cool and cute calf. Why didn't you make leggings out of that hide? Hehe. Must have been cold to hike in your puffy coat. With that water trough please say you filter! Aquamira just doesn't work in every situation. Gulp! Lastly, sure hope you bought sunscreen in town. Those were some red legs man. Take care. Thanks for the videos and pictures.

  • @xxbryan715xx

    Why did you go back to the wildcats instead of the ultra raptors? Was it the ultra raptors that caused the pain?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  9 років тому +1

      I switched before I even started hiking. The ultra raptors are just way too narrow and tight in the toe box. I think the extra reinforcement on the foot box prevents stretching and breathing. On the train ride down I knew they wouldn't work out, and had my wildcats sent to me.
