    Once the trees are cleared out, you might consider a series of small cascading earthen dams with an overflow valved control pipe. This keeps the water in the upper groundwater for your crops but can be released during floods if need be at a controlled rate. I've seen similar areas on our farm back in the 50s and 60s and it was the best small game habitat around, probably because you had to crawl thru it. No money to do anything with it back then. Soil Bank was a good idea back then, would be today. Lots of small fields and hedge rows and some natural ponds. How do you measure progress?

    Question. I know the purpose of this project, but I don’t know the laws and regulations of wetlands. Hypothetically let’s say that someone didn’t want to improve the crop performance like you are wanting to do; you are currently building a pond. Could someone build a pond in a wetland? Watching this video and seeing all that water and brush makes me think of habitat for bass. I wasn’t sure if the regs allowed a pond to built in a wetland.

  • @JMSynthetics

    I’m trying to understand. Been watching this series since the start, you can not farm this because it’s protected wet land from an ancient river bed but they will let you remove everything from the area. In the end the equipment looks to be tearing up the area pretty good. What is the end goal by removing the timber?

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  2 місяці тому +3

      Thanks for continuing to watch. I've tried to explain, but apparently I have not been successful :-)
      The trees and underbrush hinder the yields of the nearby rows. Basically 60 ft on each side is negatively impacted.
      - Moisture is used by the trees which is needed by the crops.
      - Trees 'shade' the crops, preventing them from getting the necessary sunlight
      - Deer and ground hogs use the brush to hide, then eat the corn along the brush.
      (don't worry...there is PLENTY of habitat for the Deere around this area in non-farmable tracts)
      Now, about the 'rules'. They allow us to remove the trees to ground level. We cannot remove them by the roots, as we would normally do. Translation...we have to leave the stumps at ground level. We can cut or grind them right to that level.
      The ruts caused by the equipment are not relevant. They will recover.
      In 1984, we coulda cleared this and leveled it sufficiently to be producing amazing crops on it. This big ditch would have been filled in to nearly level...just deep enough to drain the water. In 1985, the government stole it. No compensation...just a stroke of a pen saying that the land could not be used for what its most valuable purpose.
      We are obeying the rules. We are simply using them to the best advantage possible given the situation.
      If successful, we will have tremendous crops right up to the side of the area we cannot farm rather than losing 60' of valuable crop all along the ditch.
      I hope that helps.

      @@TractorTimewithTim for what it’s worth, I’m not a farmer, but I understood everything you said from the beginning.
      I live in Ohio, they have many of these in all the fields out here. In some cases we have more of these than they do fields sometimes it’s ridiculous and absurd. In fact, I believe if the government would’ve refrained from writing that law, it would help constraint all the flooding that we get because if it. It would allow for so much more drainage and so much less unnecessary water and pollution. In some cases, I believe it’s out of control. When a tree or something in the wetland dies and falls over it, arguable, doesn’t get properly cleaned up and just lies there and rots. This includes the stumps that can’t be removed. I’m not saying farmers don’t take care of the stuff that dies and falls over, I’m saying the government took away land from the farmers that could’ve been used and in turn is now neglected.
