There's so many people commenting that this story was in effect dull with too many long words.
Forget the actual story for a moment and just appreciate the prose, it was written in a slightly archaic style for obvious reasons but it's almost a dying art to portray the English language (for me at least) so beautifully. Did the author put too many long words in it for you? Please buy a dictionary or at least download one, let's keep Britain's most valuable possession alive and well for the foreseeable future and yourselves slightly more erudite!

This is kind of confusing. *Spoliers*
The guy is an Ancient but he remembers "Ancient" Egypt and Greece so not really that ancient after all and he woke up from Where? A Museum? And walked out into a Halloween/New Year party but totally misunderstood what he saw going on around him...I wasn't entirely sure this was our modern world until the scene with the public toilet with the guy doing a line of cocaine but that was pretty clear
So what are those Kannyu things doing in the modern day and why did he not realise the next morning that people don't really have masks for faces? Or am I missing a big piece of the puzzle?

I'm pretty sure it's an alternate future (present?) where there are still Halloween parties and public restrooms and coke, but also where the Kanyu are real beings and the narrator is a mummified ancient Egyptian come back to life. He is clearly expected as they have the mirror and unwrapping ceremony ready for him.
