J. None was a regular member of VoicePlay for a long time until a couple of years ago when the U.S. Navy recruited him to be part of one of their vocal ensembles. He has been one of their most frequent “featured” artists since then when he is on leave from the Navy, and many of us fans hope that he will return to being a full-time member when his stint is up. Although, Geoff and Layne have both said that having an open slot in the group allows them the flexibility of choosing who their guest collaborators are and they can pick songs and arrangements that best show off everyone’s talents.
As others have said, J None used to be a permanent member of the group until 2020 when he joined the US Navy to sing for them. While he filled the baritone spot with VoicePlay, he's singing bass for the Navy, and he has in fact covered basslines when Geoff was soloing during live performances. You can even see an instance of this on UA-cam, in their ACA Top 10 series (I think it was in another as well, but he definitely takes the bass role at one point during the Top 10 Cartoon Theme Songs). He generally features with them when he is in the area with some free time (sometimes very little free time!), and it's possible that he'll rejoin when his time in the military is through. Regardless, he's still obviously very close with the guys, and will almost certainly continue to feature with them for the foreseeable future.
J None was a member of Voiceplay 2019- 2021. He left to sing with the US Navy Chorus. He comes back whenever he can. At first he was in Washington State. A year or so ago he was transferred to Washington DC to sing with the US Navy Sea Chanters. Their most elite Chris group. Being closer means he can sing in more videos. Come in Saturday morning. Film with VP and fly back Sunday. Voiceplay has another video coming out on Friday... Party of Your Lifetime. Warframe video game company was so impressed by their Sleeping In The Cold Below video they asked them to do this one for their Warframe1999 game.
@@judithboulden3456 They released a short last week telling about it. Yesterday they released the announcement that it's coming out Friday, the 13th. Both shorts have the name of the video. The first tells the info I mentioned and much more.
Thanks for another VoicePlay reaction to their latest Christmas tune. This is the third time that Layne has arranged this one for VoicePlay over the years. Apparently, they used to perform this live in their pre-pandemic shutdown days. One of the previous arrangements is also on one of their Christmas CDs from that time. Always good to see J. back with the guys. He does a great Louis Armstrong tribute. "Carol of the Bells," Geoff's solo Christmas release (also dropped on Friday) is awesome. Judging from his album art, the Geoffquakes did some damage! LOL
The more I hear this, the more I love it. It's a nice change up from the "classic" Christmas sound. Love the jazzy feel! And definitely love the "spooky" vibe with this one. The others have already told you about J so I'll just say I hope you're gonna get to Geoff's new solo one for Christmas too. It's pretty epic! Loved your reaction!! ❤
J None used to be a member before he was recruited into the US Navy. I don't think they will give him back until his 5 yrs are done. Louis Armstrong (1952) did this and I think he really likes J None and has passed his voice down to J None back on earth. When the US Navy got him they made him a baritone. Recently, they changed him to a bass. Geoff did Carol of the Bells for his solo work. Since it is the holiday season and friends abound, consider the Full Chicken Song by VoicePlay - it is pure fun and the song is taken from the Scout Campfire Songs from long ago. It has Geoff, Layne, Earl, Eli and Tony.
J.'s "audition" with VoicePlay was in 2016 - with the first video he did with them being "Scars to Your Beautiful/ All Time Low Mashup" in early 2017. Also - the spooky factor is based on that creepy villain sneaking up on you tune of 1- flat 3 - 5 - 8 - flat 6 - 54flat321. (Spacing equals rhythm.) And that stack on the last you is J., Cesar, Eli, J., Cesar, Eli, Cesar, J.
I always love your analysis! This was just too fun, but it's genius is that it sounds so simple that it almost disguises their genius performance behind a thoroughly entertaining delivery! And believe it or not, my money's on Cesar doing that last highest note!
Yes, my understanding is that J signed with the US Navy for a six year stint a couple of years ago. So, he's got a few years left of that contract. But, I had heard that he got stationed in Florida; which would make it easy for him to join VP periodically because they are located in Orlando.
I'm old enough to remember it, but don't. It never got into the popular radio lists and it wasn't sung by other singers because no one did the voice of Louis Armstrong. He was also one of a kind. I think the whistle was Geoff, but it was probably done on a separate track. They used a robotic camera for the first time, and brought in the ugliest couch in the world. J was a permanent member from 2018 to 2021. He left and is singing with the US Navy Chorus. He comes back often. His hitchis up in a year or two. We would love to see him come back permanently, although he also has a solo channel. And Voiceplay has such flexibility with all of their collaborator friends. Don't know what will happen, but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of J None.
Double check the album art - they put a shadow of Oogie Boogie on the wall by the tree. So I’d say they were aiming for that ‘Nightmare’ feel you heard.
J has actually only been in one other video over the last 10 months lol He’s in the military and he was a member before going into the Navy. He joins them sometimes when on leave but they have also featured many other artists. ❤
As others have mentioned - they're not testing J. They would love to have him back full time when his contract with the Navy is up in 2026, but they've been performing with him since Tony left in 2016. He still fits perfectly with the group and could slot right back in if that's the choice he makes, but he's also releasing solo music and hasn't announced future plans.
I very highly recommend you check out VoicePlay's cover of "Enemy" by Imagine Dragons (originally from the Arcane TV series). It's my personal favorite song they've done, and also really pushes everyone to the limit. Everyone gets to do some really crazy stuff beyond anything you've heard from them before.
Considering J is in the Navy, specifically, for A Capella (he's the Bass Singer for the Navy's A Capella Group), it wouldn't surprise me if they gave him Christmas off so he's home for the Holidays and, thus, has time to make music with the boys.
While I’m sure J will be home in December this was filmed in November so more like Thanksgiving. However I don’t think it was that close to the holiday since Geoff filmed his solo video the day before Thanksgiving and released it to Patreon soon after the weekend. So he was busy that holiday between family and video edits.
You are not the only reactor that compared more to Nightmare Before Christmas with its spooky aspect. In any case it is a fun and different Christmas song.
@@johnwatson2887 He was constantly being introduced by announcers e.g. Ed Sullivan, as Loo ee to millions of viewers so, as you suggest, probably a lost cause. I jammed with him after hours of his appearance at the Brant Inn in Burlington Ontario in 1959 during which I naively asked him why he didn't correct the announcers. His reply was that a black man in the U.S. doesn't correct famous white announcers. So sad.

LOVE the Chicken Song routine! And Car Ride! 😅

While J. None was originally recruited as a baritone, he is now singing bass for the US Navy - so yes, he can go low!

J None was brought to Voiceplay as a baritone but has a 4 octave voice.
they sound great as always-you look great as well-loved the xmas tree from last video-have a great holiday to you and family...

J None may still be in the Navy. If his stint is almost over, he may become a permanent member again once new partner contracts are signed.
Thank you Danielle for another great reaction to Voice Play. Please do a reaction video to Geoff's newest solo cover of Carol Of The Bells.
Funnily disquieting Christmas song! Loved it! :)
Double check the album art - they put a shadow of Oogie Boogie on the wall by the tree. So I’d say they were aiming for that ‘Nightmare’ feel you heard.

Now, you NEED to check out Geoff's version of Carol of the Bells he just dropped! Pure thunder throughout!

Cesar is as much a master of high notes as Geoff is of low notes. Ceck out Cesar's whistle register notes in their cover of The Lion Sleeps Tonight!
Mr. None is currently serving inthe military. He was a member before joining the Navy. Must be on leave, believe he still has 2 years on his contract.

So even though J. None is officially part of the Navy, not VoicePlay now, I think the fans still consider him a VP member.😊
Did you not know?.. he was with them before he went into the service... thought you knew that
❤️
Loo iss Armstrong, not Loo ee Usually pronounced wrong and was a life long aggravation to him.
I was going to make the same comment. I think it's a lost cause, though.
