After the lens, the best macro gear I use is a small piece of plastic tarp that I keep in my bag. Laying down without getting wet from dew or covered with sand keeps me making photos longer. My camera bag or jacket double as a flower level tripod that’s infinitely customizable for each image.
I shoot macros with a Canon RF 100mm F/2.8 macro, very similar to the Nikkor 105mm. I suggest you remove the lens hood when shooting macro. You won't need it with the shooting angles you use for macro. Plus, the hood keeps you farther from your subject, and the whole point of a macro lens is to get CLOSE. I personally prefer to stop down to about F/9 or smaller because from such close distances, DOF is extremely shallow. Of course that shallow DOF can make for interesting effects also. I look forward to more macro images. Have fun!
Two weeks ago I bought the Nikon Z 105mm macro lens. I've used it for macro, portrait, and landscape photography. Very impressed by this versatile lens and how well it handled all three. A great piece of kit that just screams to be used in creative ways. I've been enjoying your videos for sometime now. I enjoy your work, advice, and inspiration to try new and interesting things. Thank you
Great video Kim, I wish i had come across your channel sooner. You have one of those naturally soothing voices that makes me relaxed just listening to it. I also haven't played with this lens as much as i should and this was proper encouragement to get out with it.
Kim, excellent presentation. I just acquired my 1st macro lens (Canon 100mm f2.8L) and your journey into macro photography was very well timed. But what I really appreciated about your video is that you acknowledged the beauty of the sky and nature before talking about your subject. That says a lot to me about your character. Well done.
Nice vlog kim. Snow drops will always remind me of the day we photographed them a couple of days before lock down knowing we wouldn't see each other for some time at that old wall garden.. Memories. One thing I love that first picture of the features absolutely beautiful... X
Hi Kim! I did a bit of macro photography using lichen as my subject a few years ago. I love it. It's one of my favourite subjects. You should see lichen under Ultra-Violet light! That's something else! Those images of the Snowdrops are absolutely beautiful by the way.
give the 105mm f2.8G lens a go. yes you'd need to adapt it to your Z body, but the results are phenomenal. it's my all-time favourite lens - any manufacturer, any design, any focal length. yes I'm biased but I truly think it's a masterpiece :-) A macro "rail" is also a worthwhile and relatively cheap investment too.
Hello, Kim! Your videos are exemplary and I look forward to them with keen anticipation! They have a calming effect that ends my day with the feeling that all is well. Thanks, Kim!
Nice to see you visit my neck of the woods here Kim. We're off to the lake to take the dog for a walk there tomorrow morning. It's a lovely place to walk around. There were a lot more swans around the lake until a few years ago. The lake was drained and the swans started eating the fishermen's hooks that appeared in the mud underneath and this killed them all other than a mother swan and two signets. It was very sad. There seem to be more swans around the park again now but nothing like the numbers before this happened. Did you visit the other park close by (nearer the village)? There's a much smaller lake there, but it's nice all the same. There's some lovely flowers there in springtime onwards in the Scensory Garden if you like that kind of thing re: macro.
Thanks Kim for sharing your macro photography.....it's amazing what you can find just walking around....I don't have the 105mm lens but will consider buying (when financial) as even s/h it is not a cheap lens.... love your work... cheers from Australia 😀❤️
Hi Kim. What camera settings were you using. I had noticed on your other videos you put them up beside your photos, but not today. Love macro. Usually fungi for me and I stack so definitely a tripod. Thanks
Thanks, Kim. Your lens loks very similar to the Sigma 105mm prime I use. Try taking a little bean bag next time for stability instead of a tripod. Cheers
Macro photography can be so interesting and frustrating at the same time. You get to see something you don't normally see. The benefit of the 105 vs. a 50mm macro lens is that your focus distance is further away from your subject. For any given magnification, the lens is further away. This can be helpful if trying to not scare the bug away The downside is generally the cost.
Love your vids and attitude. I'm learning a lot from you. Have you considered a Laowa macro lens with a 2x macro? A neighbor suggested I look into it. I havent seen all of your vids, maybe you have one already
I’m trying to do macro photography. I have a Nikon z5 with nikkor 24-200 zoom lens. My shutter release doesn’t work past 70mm zoom. Why can’t I do macro at full zoom?
I own the Laowa 100 mm f/2.8 - it's an excellent lens, but it is a manual focus lens and it does not have build in VR, if that's okay with you its a decent alternative to the Nikon 105 mm, wich is I think the best macro lens out there
How beautiful the clouds are. True, but there was something more special. As a content continental European, I was on a walk in nature, yesterday. I know my country well and did not bring out the big gear - my company was more important than shooting whatever. The night before had been freezing cold, but now after midday, we had a blue sky and almost no wind. While the thermometer indicated 9C (48F), the warmth from the sun was clearly felt. Similar skies, clouds. But that was not "it". The sun does not come too high in the sky yet at our London-like latitude and that makes the colour temperature slightly warmer. But that was not "it". Nor were the slightly longer shadows. In fact the light was rather hard. But that was not "it". At some point, I took off my pair of glasses, and said to my companion, the haze I'm seeing is purely from dirt on my spectacles. Because, that was "it" - the almost total absence of moist in the atmosphere caused a clarity that made us see "forever". No thermals that vibrate the air and blur vision or images. No haze. No extremely fine dust in the moist or transported by winds. What was extremely special was the light, the quality of the light. I saw that kind of light in the video too.

Your positive spirit and your sense of wonder are a large part of your photography. Thanks for sharing!

I have Snowdrops in my yard. They are blooming now. I love taking photos of them. I enjoy your videos.
Loved the photo of the first group of feathers. Well done Kim. 👍👍

the 105mm macro is my next lens, ordering it today!
I love this lens, one of my favourites. Gorgeous images Kim
Excellent presentation. As your photography shows attention to detail, your presentation shows it also. Thank you!

This episode reminds me of shooting in the grasslands and badlands here in Alberta, a whole world at your feet and a huge sky overhead.
Beautiful done. Also gorgeous sky. Can't wait for next episode.

Very nice video. Excellent representation of macro photography .
Thanks Kim. The Z 105 is one of my favourite lenses although I use it far less often than I should!! Will be in my kit bag in 2 weeks' time.
Great stuff Kim! Thanks so much!
Wonderful set of images. Thank you!
Nicely done, Kim. Well chosen subjects and clearly explained.
Very well done. Even more impressed you got these hand holding!
Beautiful shots Kim.😊
Great video... Love the way you present... Short and sweet....I too own this awesome lens...
Thank you, Kim. Inspiring!

Thank you for the history of Pitfour Wendy. I love it there and go quite often. Very beautiful place.
You've inspired me to get out more with my macro lens - a 105mm f2.8 Sigma Art. Thanks Kim, great video and lovely snowdrop shots.
This is lovely to hear Alasdair

Great video. I wonder how a tripod and the focus stacking would work with that lens. Could be interesting
I really enjoy watching your choices of location when talking to camera.
May I ask what camera you use to film yourself talking?
Have you thought about using Shutter release Continuous High while slowly moving camera to get a sharp image?
Hi. Which one do you pick, 50 mm or 105 mm?
have you tried extension tubes , they can make macro even more interesting
Love your vids and attitude. I'm learning a lot from you. Have you considered a Laowa macro lens with a 2x macro? A neighbor suggested I look into it. I havent seen all of your vids, maybe you have one already
What nikon camera are you using
What should I do to avoid blurring of macro photos? I use 105mm
hi Kim, i just tried out teh @nisi filters close up lens kit , screw macro lens onto existing lenses and was fairly impressed with it as an option ?
That's great to hear ☺️
pleae advise your bag pack brand and from where we can get

that's a stunning lens, I have no budget for it now, so untill I do I use my Laowa Macro, wich is also a great lens
Hi, you mentioned Laowa? Is it a good lens? Is it as good as nikon mc 105?
I own the Laowa 100 mm f/2.8 - it's an excellent lens, but it is a manual focus lens and it does not have build in VR, if that's okay with you its a decent alternative to the Nikon 105 mm, wich is I think the best macro lens out there
Complimenti! 🇮🇹
That's well weird I was out bagging some Snowdrops .. and Lichen and Moss etc this afternoon ..

A really great lens - only the 50mm f1.2 is better ...🦘
