    My favorite hack/cut of sheet metal was from years ago when I saw the aftermath of a DIYer pulling a VW Bug engine out from the top - it looked like the dude used a big can opener to get the body sheet metal out of the way of a partially stripped down engine - what a mess! It was so mangled that I just cut off the rear body section and grafted in a replacement. No car design is perfect, Lincoln laid an egg where a few simple design changes should have been made. Removing or dropping the inner fender liner is not hard. But if you are working on a rusty roachy old Town Car - then cut/hack with abandon!

  • @midas617
    @midas617 3 роки тому +2

    A little bit more involved than an 03 Grand Marquis that I had to replace the evaporator on. I remember that I had to remove the wheel and fender liner and had lots of room. after that, I was able to split the evaporator housing in half and then after the replacement was put in I put black RTV and it was hardly noticeable. it came out very clean.
    On the Town Car, you're not able to split the Evaporator housing in half, so, to do it correctly the whole evaporator core housing needs to be removed. at least it separates from the heater core side so it might be possible to loosen it and let it hang a bit to have room for the evap to slide out and in while clearing the sheet metal. as long as the wheel and fender liner is removed, expose all the room to be able to do the job somewhat properly.
    Dang, I hope I never have to do this, but my OCD self knows deep down that I'll be doing it the hard way if the time comes. I hate that.

    You need go on the inside under the dash and loosen that evaporator core case from the firewall and then it'll come forward enough to where you don't have to use metal shears... Really dude??
    Now that's going to rust where you cut you don't use metal shears when you can't get evap core out like that come on man....

    great video, I have a 2003 Town Car, gonna give it a try.
    by the way, with all of that out of the way, can you easily reach the HVAC blend door actuator motor , they tend to go bad at about 10-12 years, and the dash needs to come off to get at it. But if it could be reached with all of that stuff out of the way, then even if it was not bad at the time, its only $50 for a new one. anyway, great video, and hope you can give me the part number. Thanks.

    • @DoubleTroubleGarage
      @DoubleTroubleGarage  3 роки тому +2

      It is NOT the only way nor is it the "Proper way" but this was the easiest way.
      Lincoln should have made it possible to change it this way without the cutting, I am not going to say I recommend that anyone do the evaporator change this way but I would do it the same way again and again.

      you are right! It is a stupid design and I don't really see any other way to do it.
      and I know this can't be the way to do this job but I agree with you that this is the short cut to get it out. I suppose 😆!
      Thanks again!

    • @MrCuckoobox

      I believe the "intended" way is to remove the wheel and the plastic liner (guessing?), but that is probably worse. Seems like that whole plastic box containing the evaporator should have "accessible" fasteners, disconnect the lines and move the whole box toward the front of the car and the up and out. That whole area there by the fire wall and wiper/water run off near the windshield is a total "Cluster F'k" that "Ford & Cousins" designed - with the water leaks from a "foam" gasket and the inability to access the ac makes it a train wreck. It is a shame because for the most part, it is a fairly reliable vehicle but because of these repairs (if you are not a DIYer) the cars end up in the salvage yard because it does not make economic sense to repair them.

    • @DoubleTroubleGarage

      To answer your question first, NO. It sounds to me like you are low in freon because when your compressor cycles you can get that musty smell along with warmer air or if your air is charged fully it may be your cycling switch.
      Hope this helps.

      I Bought a cheap "sniffer" from Amazon, the way you test is to close all the dash vents except for one place the sniffer in the open one, with the fan on low speed turn the key on and if the sniffer goes from a tick to a growl you got your culprit.

Be sure to have your blower fan on low let your car sit for a while or overnight close all vents except for one stick the sniffer in the open one and turn on the key to accessorie where the fan comes on and see if you get a growl, it won't be a long one but if you get a hit there should be NO freon coming from your vents.

I will look at my t car see if theres clearance. Maybe leave lines on and disconnect front of lines . I will check my t car again to see if it will work hopefully.

    This is not the way the evaporator is serviced on this vehicle. Never cut your car unless you are looking to cut corners. Pulle the dash and the the the entire heater air box, its easier.
