The Sai is often overlooked within the martial arts. The general public is familiar with the Katana since it's featured prominently in film and at most exhibitions profiling Japanese history and culture. When demonstrated by a master though, the Sai is a phenomenal weapon.
So the sai’s primary purpose was as a truncheon with an optional thrusting point, and a widely upswept hook guard to use for joint manipulation and/or weapon catching. Seems pretty damn agonistically versatile for a farmer’s sowing tool.
half-japanese kid with a mother who loves kendo here, but a lot of "weaponry" from okinawa is stuff that could either be hidden very easily, or passed off as something else because the peasantry weren't allowed weaponry, but needed some way of defending themselves. This is why you see some pretty crazy shit coming from fairly common items in okinawan martial arts. I know its been a couple of years but i thought you might enjoy the historical context!!
@@simonharford4834 "No sir, that isn't a weapon, the curved blade is just used for my garden. It's a gardening scythe. Don't be silly, this would never kill a man"
I know this is from years ago but the Sai was never a “gardening tool”. It’s from China (arguably India) and used in other places throughout Asia and Southeast Asia as a police baton/restraining weapon. It was never for farming or “poking holes in the ground fur planting rice” those are fairy tales
This is why i like the sai so much, it's almost a perfect self defense tool that also has lethal defensive ability, you can really control how much if any damage you do to an attacker.
Arctic Gator and the little spaces between the sidekick blades (just naming it something else) is good for trapping weapons.you twist your opponents weapon when it’s trap and go for a blow
Thanks for the interesting video. The Sai is actually a good ancient law enforcement weapon and its design is still used by modern policemen. The Rapid Rotation Baton by RRB Systems is one such example of an ancient weapon put to modern use.

Also it's nice to see a big similarity between the techniques here and some of the Medieval dagger vs sword. Shows that warriors the world over had similar thinking and used similar tools in similar ways. To me if a wide range of cultures have basic techniques that are virtually the same and with similar weapons then it is those techniques that have been proven effective in the widest variety of time, situation and level of armor. Thus they are the techniques that any weapons practitioner, despite background, should know well and how to counter.

sensei Todd seems to be leaving himself open to a side cut when he catches the guy by his arm. he is not in control of both arms leaving the other hand to piviot the sword to the side against the sensei's leg and midsection.
Wow! Woah, that was truly incredible sir, I cannot thank you enough for blessing us with this knowledge freely. I will definitely be studying and learning these techniques safely with a partner.
You have taught me new ways to practice with my sais. Which I will never use now because its too deadly. Especially if you had a gauche/parrying dagger or something. I never did get to take a weapon though because those classes were extra but my Sensei taught me the basic movements of the first sai kata, I can't remember what it was called, weapons had two belts, white and black.
My special needs son really likes martial arts 🥋 he finds them very interesting and entertaining! He especially likes sais he says they remind him of Renaissance parrying daggers 🗡.
I brought one into kindergarten and someone snitched on me. I took cigarettes and put in his bag later and then told some other kids he had cigs. I'm pretty sure that was all in my first week of school.
I don't believe you'd see a serious swordsman slashing like you describe. While combat speed is significantly faster, the cuts are still extremely controlled. The sai is highlighted here for the purpose of instruction for practice, of which you would require a great deal to have even a reasonable chance in this situation. If you do get inside the sword like he shows, you have a reasonable chance to best your opponent.
Funny thing is all them moves work! I have trained ninjutsu with these weapons and everything is effective, but I mostly was taught in a sai fight, when the opportunity shows strike with the handle on the throat like a unarmed combat throat strike
We have some videos on Sai in the back logs. Although, we do not focus on that weapon much. That would definitely be a cool (dual wield) combination class, wouldn't it? We'll have to try that, sometime. I have never tried that before. Thanks for the suggestion.
The thing I'm learning now, watching videos like these, that I was mistaken from media and film, is that with sai you swat the enemy rather than excessive stabs.
I liked the demo with actual weapons. It would've been interesting to see the instructor using 1 sai in reverse grip guard to deflect & the 2nd to do the things demonstrated. Seems like if you deflect with 1 & hook with 2, you could flip 1 back around for stabbing or whatever.
Well, it is really just a bit of fun. I have finished it now and am just editing it but basically it's my own interpretation of the TMNT characters based on my experiences with martial arts and as a teenager. I will probably put it on my blog at some point but due to it's copyright infringing nature, it will most likely not get published unless someone out of the blue gives me permission to do so. So, is your book fiction or non-fiction?
My book is going to be a martial arts handbook based on my interpritiation of techniques and my own philosophys and my experiences through my martuial arts journey so far. Well thats what im hopeing to achieve anyways lol :D
The first half of the video shows the Sai being used as an off-hand weapon. So you should your main weapon in the other hand. The habit with the Sai as off-hand was to stick the Sai through the opponent's foot, and then strike/cut him with the main weapon while he could not leave or flee. Sometimes you could have 2 Sai, but then you directly blocked/paraded and then counter with the other Sai piercing deadly the foe before skipping to the next one. While used as a peacekeeper tool, it was mainly used reversed, handled by the Monouchi part, using the Yokutsume (formerly Yoku and Tsume parts, aka "wings" of the Sai) for making your opponent fall down, and then stick him to the ground thanks to Ne-waza (ground lock), awaiting police forces (or colleagues 😉).
I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT SAI CAME FROM SOUTH EAST ASIA. THE 3 PRONG TRIDENT LIKE SPEAR WERE ONLY FOUND IN HINDU TEMPLE. BUT SAI WAS NOT EVOLVED FRM INDIA. AND NEVER WAS AN INDIAN TRADITIONAL WEAPON. But SAI PRACTITIONER WERE IN INDONESIAN & MALAY MARTIAL ART CURRICULUM.
9:47 Grabbing here is kind of unnecessary in my opinion because the guy with the katana has already used all of his power to cut (you can see him leaning forward after he makes the strike). He can’t do anything at this point, so you really don’t need to grab his sleeve in order to have full control of the strike. If he had enough energy left, he could just pull the sai guy’s hand with his arms and then throw the sai guy off balance and strike again. If you do plan on grabbing your opponent’s sleeve while they’re off balance to strike, you’ll have to be quick with it because you don’t know if your opponent is quick with recovery. So in short, Just striking only is way faster than grabbing and then striking.
Stepping sideways is not faster than swinging sword. It is possible with predictive timing but it would be so unreliable in real situation that learning such technique would literally put you in danger. Use your weapon to deflect the attack as you are stepping aside. Otherwise great insight on how and why sai was used.

The only problem with the sai he is using to do the locks is that they are the crap kind you get from any martial arts website. You wouldn't be able to do some of the locks with a traditional sai like shuriedo. And that is because the yoku are smaller and it would only work on someone with small arms.
I believe they were only doing it slowly because they do not want to hurt each other. The yoku is designed to curve outward to allow entry inwards. In a real fight, if you jam it with maximum force, almost any body part will compress to fit within the prongs. The pain is of course, excruciating (ever had your arm caught between metal bars?).
Yes, octagonal sai are better for locks. And the black ones are a little harder to follow than the chrome ones. I was taught a grip with the thumb resting alongside a prong and pressing against the shaft, which gives more blocking power. But oh, the grips and locks in this video are beautiful!
