  • In this episode we finally kick the c0vid nastiness after a few days of downtime in Fairbanks with Mama Bear nursing us back to health and feeding us REAL home-made food... including that delicious fresh halibut!
We take it easy on the first day back at it and stumble upon one of the coolest discoveries in the Alaskan bush yet; a dismantled gold dredge! Unfortunately, the rain continued to keep me from panning in the streams but stay tuned... we make up for it.

This truck is setup very similar to ours in a fairly stock arrangement and has gotten us everywhere we've tried to go. Most of the modifications we've made were to deal with all the added weight (adj coilovers in front and airbags in the back). Ours is the 6ft bed with a topper and drawers that we sleep in so no RTT. This frees up space on the racks for a 100w panel, gas/water rotopax, Kickass shower awning and a heated 5gal container for extra water/shower. On the rear rack there is 3 Pelican cases, diesel heater in a custom made metal box and an ARB awning going straight off the back. I've been really careful to stay within weight limits of all components (GVWR, racks, topper) and have had zero issues so far over 20,000 trip miles crisscrossing the US. This is a 4 seasons setup and powering everything gets split up according to the temps. Diesel and water tank heaters in the cold weather, fridge and 12v fans in the rear for the hotter days. We've been asked why we spent so much on building an overlanding vehicle and my answer is we didn't really. I still would have bought the truck and the cost of a stand alone 4x4 RV would be 2x the cost. Plus in under a half hour I can completely unload everything and still have a functioning truck.

My wife and I have been watching your videos almost since the beginning. I’m so glad that you and Caroline were able to recover so quickly from Covid. My wife and I were scheduled to go hiking in the Sierra Nevadas and when we got to California I contracted Covid and have been spending our vacation flat on my back! So I’m watching your video while waiting for my fever to break.

Raining in Alaska. How typical. I used to live up there. The weather is the only thing that keeps me from moving back. That said, Alaska holds a special place in my heart and soul.

Burbot is poor man’s lobster. We had a cabin in Central, Alaska. In February or so they would open the road from winter snow and a few times we were right behind the bulldozers cleaning the road. Back before the antiquities act we went to the known places and got a few buckets.

Nice one , good thing you went and took care of that covid , when there is a little one involved you can't take safety second . Mountain House meals are pretty good but to me their idea of a serving and mine are way different , I could eat the entire package but I always add things as well like what you had I would have thrown in some tabasco also just so it has some kick otherwise freeze dried tends to be bland in my opinion . Hopefully I will make it up there maybe next year although there are plans for Florida next year if that falls through I may shoot for Alaska and Northwest Territories , Tuktoyaktuk is a place I would really like to go plus all point between here and there .

Glad to hear you bounced back so fast, hope the rest of the trip will be safe and sound!
I see the topper on the truck is a RSI one, 2 questions: can you lock it from the inside and is there some kind of insulation eg carpet on the walls/roof inside?
I am in the market for a topper ...
Stay safe and thanks for taking us along!

I don't like the premiere style. I usually miss these videos as they're not available so I go to something else. Then they build up to 5 or 6 episodes till I watch them in order because they're never initially available and the order is confusing so I don't bother for a while. Love the channel though.
