It hard to believe that I was not even born (b.1981) when this was filmed. I love The Manhattan Transfer. i have been a fan since I was a child. i'm 43 now.
The addition of Cheryl was just so crucial to how successful MT rose to, in the late 70's & all through the 80's & 90's. -----------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
lot of groups come and go but there will never be anything like these four acapella geniuses.... Sorry, just my opinion and I love this group and have followed them ever since their inception..... RIP TIM HAUSER!
This is so special ! To get to hear them rehearse their parts shows the complexity of what they’re doing musically , and the difficulty of singing 4 part harmony!!! Renewed my love & respect for this group 👍🏾😍❤️!
4 of THE best, to ever come together in vocal harmony. Each has talent & both women have carved out single careers along with TMT, & that's been a huge reason why they stayed together for so very long. --------------RIP, Tim Hauser.
This is literally how u do harmonies so perfectly and on key......I’ve been doing it this way since I was a kid......all thanks to Manhattan Transfer 🔥❤️
I had a group that tried to be like them and we rehearsed constantly, like this. It was brutal, very difficult and hell to keep the group together. It takes such an incredible and special group of people to stay together for the many years TMT has! I'm glad they did, I love them!
Sounds better in rehearsal than in final concert and on the cd recording. The harmonies sound much sweeter when taken at the slower tempo. RIP Timothy DuPron "Tim" Hauser (December 12, 1941 - October 16, 2014).
I guess it´s the much more natural recording of their voices during the rehearsal. On stage every voice is just too loud amplified, so it looses it´s natural timbre.
No problem. We just had a big discussion about this on the group's page. We now have exact info. Concert was filmed 12/4/1980 and first broadcast on PBS' Soundstage on 1/7/1981. This information is direct from PBS.
Jim Springer I've waited just this long to see this show again! I watched it back when we lived in Chicago. This was absolutely electrifying. They should re-record that song. And it should be published, this is fabulous! Thank you so @Vadim Shinnik xoxo
I always thought that the line "ROYAL QUEEN" was "BEAUTY QUEEN!" Summer of 1980 and Janine worked at the Natural Food Supermarket in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She walked and I rode my Bike. She was on my way home and she said she wasn't interested in any kind of relationship. She was a walking Hippie Dream Girl: no makeup, great teeth, slightly wild hair. I withdrew my intentions quickly. I knew that Broken Hearts cause insufferable damage.
No - you just made a normal error. All male voices sound one octave above their real pitch. So - if I as a musical director give a tone to one of the male voices I have to give him that tone one octave higher.
Yaron Gershovsky--------------the MD of the group, forever, or so it seems.
Insanely talented and incredibly hardworking.

The concentration, & sheer professionalism it takes to pull off this number, is mind boggling.
Just when you thought you knew, wow.
I love that they're chompin' on sammiches during a vocal rehearsal! If we had tried that back in HS choir, oh boy.... LOL

Wonderful, wonderful wonderful! Watching these 4 great singers working out their vocal arrangement and approach! Thank you for sharing! Need more!!!

I caught them one evening at LA's Greek Theatre, one of the best concerts I've ever been to & at the finale They did several encores .....
It is your opinion and you are entitled to it. You just happen to be 100% right.

Janis with the funny tongue gesture at 0:42. I just couldn't get over it!
Wow! Cool practice session.
I love watching their process, I hope to be in a really good jazz vocal group some day, so I really look up to these guys!
Love, love, love them!

Miss you, Tim Hauser ! ------RIP ! -----------------Wolfsky9
Wow, that alto part is hard. Also, Alan Paul is so hot! Tenor part is all over the place...
Une Merveille !

This was a great show. I've been trying to find it since it aired decades ago. Can you please post the whole show? Or more of it?
Thanks!

FYI, this concert was originally broadcast on PBS' Soundstage in 1980, not 1982.
Jim Springer Thank You for information!

I like the slower tempo version that they’re practicing versus the performance version.

If ONLY they had recorded THIS version instead of the one on the LP!
This is what “cool” really is!
like my name is Jeannine
In the opening phrase, the tenor part is higher than the alto part. Why would someone arrange that way? Isn't that a no-no?
No - you just made a normal error. All male voices sound one octave above their real pitch. So - if I as a musical director give a tone to one of the male voices I have to give him that tone one octave higher.
This is also sometimes done to preserve the melodic line for the singers. Vocal jazzers with great ears love the cross-voicing!
Hendricks, Lambert & Ross were the originators - Manhattan Transfer were the masters!
Tim never hits the last two notes. Anyway - they had a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere during the rehearsals. Just great.

Nice to hear how they're working out the harmonies! They did a great version. But of course, Eddie Jefferson's version is #1
Sin Laurel no son lo mismo...
Eso es correcto. Ellos son mejores.
