The NFL quickly upped their standards on stadiums shortly after the NFL merger with the AFL. Metropolitan quickly fell below standards back then, and could not be expanded, due to poor design choices, and so the Vikings and Twins had wanted to build a new stadium, and they decided to do it downtown. When the Vikings wanted a new stadium, the Twins agreed to move into the same stadium as well. That helped the Metrodome be built and Metropolitan be abandoned and later demolished.

At the start of the 4th quarter I could see my buddy across the road outside playing around. I stayed glued to the TV and saw the whole thing. He gave up and missed it! Dummy!

When I drove from Cincinnati to Minneapolis to see my Cincinnati Bearcats play at The Metrodome in the NCAA Final Four in 1992 we drove past the site in Bloomington and they were just then opening The Mall Of America on the site. It was gone. 😔
I'm from there, only went to 1 Twins game. The Met didn't have nearly the same stature as Wrigley or Fenway. Ruth and all the great players of the past played at one or the other or both. Wrigley is safe from the wrecking ball but I'm not so sure about Fenway.
The Twins and the Vikings moved to the Metrodome in 1982, and then they decided to demolish Metropolitan in 1985. Then they decided to build the Mall of America in the early 90's and the rest is history.
Last Twins game that I attended was at the Met. Never saw them play at the dome or target field. I remember Rod Carew and jets from the nearby airport flying over the stadium. Great memories.
That must have been before the 1979 season. Rod Carew's last season with the Twins was 1978. Carew was a hitting machine. It's a shame he never got to a World Series.

I kid you not, there were dog tracks in the snow. Never saw any dogs, but we imagined some vicious guard dogs roaming the stadium, lol
As a Minnesotan and a Vikings fan who has to deal with winter temperature lows ranging from 0F to -20F, I can very much believe in a decision to build a dome. A Texan like yourself wouldn't understand. But then again, I have no idea why _Texas_ of all states would insist on building domes for the Cowboys, Texans/Oilers, Astros AND Rangers.

It used to be where the Marlboro sign is. I'm not sure when they replaced it. Midwest Federal for years had a bounty for any player that could hit the sign. I don't think anybody ever did.
@@star978 you are right . It was 25 thousand but it would have to been a monster hit to get there . The scoreboard was on the other side of both bullpens . Yeah I remember it well . Great memories for me riding up Cedar avenue on a two lane bridge through corn fields and cows for what is now Apple Valley in my grandpa's old Cadillac with the big fins as we would see the grand grandstand in the middle of a massive parking lot coming out of the Minnesota river bottums . It was like a cathedral to this little kid I assure you . Every once in awhile we would spend the weekend at either the Thunderbird or the Curtiss Hotel downtown and Catch all three games . Thanks, it got pretty ratty towards the end of it's life when they stopped doing a lot of the maintenance on it.
