In my experience as an American the non-cycling public doesn't think much of cyclists, especially the spandex clad ones. However, individually and in a non-cycling context the ladies really seem to dig them more than your average Joe. Could be the fact that they're in shape. Female cyclists are a different story. The ones in really good shape intimidate men and generally have to date other cyclists.
Without sounding broken hearted about being attractive to women as a cyclist I find that in my normal weekly cycling venue where many people of all genders and ages go I see some incredible attractive people, although I can understand people being attracted to reading, I find those people attractive because one they are pursuing a sport that on many levels is difficult, they demonstrate determination and many come all sorts of bikes which means they are doing their best with the budget they have and still participating.
