David was all about harmonizing, not realizing that Gary’s ‘discord’ could easily harmonize with his brother’s. David’s own ego got in the way of true harmony and beauty in music. Fuck, I love this scene.
Mark Mothersbaugh (one of the leads of the band DEVO, who is tributed by some of the outfits of the background guys here, among other episodes) is the composer for this show and many other tv classics. He probably had a big hand in this, being especially known for his synth work. Another notable show he had a hand in was Rugrats, which carries both DEVO's kinda weird sound as well as Chuckie Finster whose nerdy glasses, wavy hair and timid laidback personality was partly inspired by Mark too.
Let's face it... The whole entirety of this show's soundtrack is on point. From Kenny Loggins, David Bowie, Mountain, to this. Have to admit.. Quintel is the greatest cartoon creator of this generation. He created something that all of us will forever cherish till the end. I'm humbled this show played a huge role in my childhood. Right now, I'm watching his other show called Close Enough. Hopefully, this show will bring back all of those good moments I had with regular Show.
Being a synthizen of Synthos must be great. You get your own instrument, you live on a ring planet, and instead of wars that ruin your home you get to watch two people get into a synthesizer battle
I like how david was looking at this keyboard like music has a set of rules, and gary is letting his music flow freely not even looking at his sympathizer
I'd hate to be Mordecai and Rigby they are listening to GODS make music after this they will either never like any other songs again or be haunted by the fact that they'll never be able to listen to something so amazing again... Unless they hear the dude play again
I think my favorite thing about synthesizers is how they make you feel. It’s almost like you’re traveling through space without a single worry in the world . I can just imagine vibing to this on acid
Dave's music was simple variations on a theme. Impressive keyboard work, but no real creativity. Gary's music, while slightly repetitious , showed real variation and creativity, The discord was truly inspired! Also Dave 's music was 100% electronic whilst Gary was playing with valves. Dave, the poor bastard, never stood a chance!
I love how geeky this episode got with synthesizer (and even music in general) jargon: low pass filters, ring modulation, synth patches, unresolved seventh- the studio knew what they were doing with this episode 😅
I haven’t seen this show since it ended and just hearing the first few notes brought back memories and brought some tears along with it. Such a beauty that should never die
I think it's because at the end Gary actually harmonizes David's music with his own and David is thanking him for letting him hear such a masterpiece before he was killed.
Because in the beginning of the episode he said it was impossible to harmonize with those notes. He was obsessed with harmony and discordant notes haunted him. Gary proved you could create harmony with discordant notes and gave david peace.
This went insanely hard when it didn’t need to. Really appreciate JG Quintel and the other creators for making this masterpiece for such a minor character
I love that they don't look at their instruments. They're almost deadlocked in on their opponents. The flow of radically bodacious tunes is just a flex of their mastery on one another and us the lucky spectator. As a side I can see what someone in the comments said. The other gent seems to just show his tunes while the other puts spirit and effort into his magic. A real show of pride that the other dude had to break out his second form while the other simply just styled all over his balls.
To never underestimate the power of a single note, for it can make you one of the few of many talents that separates you from the others with whom you are different from. You may not understand it, but in the future, time will let you know the smallest thing is something to cherish, for it can change your life for good.
Lmao hate to 'break it' to you, but like 5 seconds after he hit the sun a bunch of people took bats to his belt, which ultimately meant David was murdered 😂
Ok but the way both Gary and David, even though their styles were so different, reached harmony at the climax of the song combining them is just amazing. David is methodical and can make the base line, Gary puts that little extra and the melodic accents. That's why David said "thanks" at the end, he understood harmony in music.
as I learn more about music, I've learned how to at least somewhat articulate the main reason why David loses is that he doesn't go anywhere with his melody. He never develops, just adds unrelated progressions over it. While it's certainly catchy in its own right, it's basically soulless. It's static, stagnant. Gary meanwhile, his response is full of life and soul. The melody is dynamic, spanning a wide range. And his second round develops the melody into a crescendo, something David's lines could never do.
That's 100% true, and David realized that as soon as Gary started his first verse, when the other Synthesins began vibing with Gary's tune. David tries to step up his game and amplify his power, but it is to no avail. David rose to power through his technology, but Gary fights with a sound that is tuned to the soul. That's how David loses. He realizes that even though he has the tools necessary to beat Gary, he doesn't have any knowledge of playing music that people can feel. Gary knows this as well, because his verses are just complementing David's, but with so much passion that it's overpowering. It's a beautiful piece of music that I thoroughly enjoy listening to on repeat, and it's one of the best tracks in the entire series of Regular Show
@@brockbond2835 Don't discredit David though. He might have lost but, in my honest opinion on a purely technical level, David is the better player of the two. Both are masters in their own right though.
