Great lecture Mr. DiLorenzo. I went to Mises University in 1990 and 1991 (It used to take place at Stanford University). Love Austrian Economics for ever since then.
A heartfelt thank you to the Mises Institute for sharing this talk and to Thomas J. Di Lorenzo for giving it. To me being a young chemist and following a rather naive approach to economics, this kind of presentation is really insightful. It shows that Mr. Di Lorenzo was searching for truth in economic theories very profoundly during his long career. The way he presents his way to Austrian Economics sounds authentic and credible. To me, the "Austrian Way of Economics" seems to be the most honest one and this talk reinforced my perception. The treatise on Lincoln at the end shows clearly how manipulation and illusion are connected to the state and happen in the state's interest. For way too many people the "energy barrier" to thoughts and realization that the state is a manipulator and a cheat seems to be too high. They were educated in public schools where they hear every day about the heroic achievements of the welfare state. They all should first remember the dictum: *The truth stands on its own, it is the lie which needs to be protected by institutions.*
An incomplete list of people mentioned in the talk (for myself to remember). Mainstream Economists, Mainstream Historians: Milton Friedman (1912-2006) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_Friedman James M. Buchanan (1919-2013), Nobel Prize of Economics 1986, an economists with many opinions similar to Austrian School en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_M._Buchanan Paul Samuelson (1915-2009), master of mathematical economics en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Samuelson Gabor S. Boritt (born 1940), historian, author of the book Lincoln and the Economics of the American Dream, heavily criticized in this talk, director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabor_Boritt Economists and Historians who are familiar with the Austrian School and represent its body of thought: Ludwig von Mises (1883-1973) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_von_Mises Murray Newton Rothbard (1926-1995), an icon of Libertarianism, Austrian Economics and an excellent author en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_Rothbard Robert Higgs (born 1944), economic historian, senior Fellow of the Mises Institute en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Higgs
Viva MISES! This is truly the only sane academic institution on the planet. Thanks to everyone here who has taken time to comment. I truly love all of you. Rand Paul 2016- it's not as silly as the State would lead us to think... :) BTW- on the subject of Joseph Stiglitz... his wife is Anya Schiffrin. I Went to Ethical Culture Fieldston and Reed College with her. She is 17 years his junior... a bit weird, IMHO. I dated her younger sister Natalia, who is married to Philippe Sands, QC- the moron who thought that he could indict George Bush at the World Court for War Crimes. Her father Andre and my Uncle, Morris Philipson, Chair of the U Chicago Press for 32 years, co-founded Pantheon Books. They met at Random House in the late 1950s when Bennett Cerf published Ayn Rand's works...
*No wonder that Austrian Economics is a complete failure. Only good in paper like communism but unpractical in reality. I can't believe grown-up men gather in a place while circle-jerking and talking about Austrian/anarcho economy. Give it up folks.*
Economics is a manufactured “science “.Take government intervention and regulation out and the economy and free markets will operate smoothly. When the state interferes ,the complexity and variability in the economy multiply geometrically with each additional interference necessitating this new “study” of the economic affect of manipulating a free market.
Did Murray or any of the later Austrians ever write criticisms of public choice? I remember Murray making a really deep scholarly insight in one of his lectures that seemed to get to the heart. But how much use is there in pct?

atletico ATM Lies. The Austrians have better insights than the current mainstream economics being taught in today’s typical university. But there are many things to be said about the current mathematical and theoretical models that mainstream Keynesians adhere to, all of which failed to predict the 2008 crash when it was staring them in the face.

Thomas is the man. And I love the fact that he got in a very significant shot against that despicable bastard Lincoln. Go Thom!
Got to love Dr. DiLorenzo; didn't know he was involved with public choice and learned a little more about its history.
A great intellectual and fellow Westminster College graduate. Go Titans!!!
Really enjoyed this talk

How much is applicable? Useful? In practice? Examples? What do we change and to what?

***** Maybe a search on Mises.org for "public choice" would be useful.
