Excellent vid as always. The SK-1 was my first foray into sampling in 86. I still have it and I guess that's why I bought a Liven LoFi12 recently. It's amazing how many people started their love of synths with a simple Casio keyboard. Without Casio I would never be the pauper that I am today.
I miss my old SK-1. Another Casio I wish I hadn’t gotten rid of. But it went to a good cause, the kids I looked after in an after school program were having so much fun with it that I thought they would get more use out of it than I would, so I donated it to the program.
This is the BEST KEYBOARD EVER!!!!! I had one of these growing up. I still remember making funny sounds in the mic. It really started my love for synths and electronic music. Awesome video.
I have a nice collection of these types of keyboards. Sk 1 + 5 and the Vss 30 and vss 200. Powerhouses of keyboards. They all have their charm and the vss 30 is in a league of it's own but the Sk-1 is just so damn inspirational
Greetings Professor Hainbach! I've been using the SK-1 in my music and on my albums since I was 7 years old when my older brother gave me one that he traded for a snowboard. I use the sampler to sample parts of my own recorded song tracks and then I reintroduce them into the mix; sometimes treating the sampled audio with time effects. Die Wiederaufbereitung.
One of my favorite things to do with a sk 1 is to samples a random noise then go to the note recording mode then slow down the tempo then play random notes as fast as possible then speed the tempo up and press autoplay, it makes a very intriguing noise.
Still have mine too! Greatest source of comedy in my studio. Programming a melody and playing with random sample sounds has provided hours of tearful glee!
Back when it came out, an affordable portable sampling keyboard was amazing, including what now in this advanced computer age is no big deal: play your sample in REVERSE ( I'm thinking of the SK-5 with finger pads it turns out ). Also a fun thing to do with it was to sample a chord of a live instrument like a piano, and you could play one finger chords on it. Though of course it is definitely a Low-Fi instrument, people should keep that in mind. I recall making a sitar-like sound by sampling plucking a guitar string with a piece of metal buzzing against it.
Finally, I have peak cheap gear that was featured on a video before y'all upped the price. Scored one of these at an estate sale for $40usd a couple months back. Been too busy to play with it, and it needs some love, but it's an absolute classic.
These are definitely super fun. Some of the sounds are legitimately solid (flute in particular), and the ability to change the envelopes is surprisingly useful. And of course the lo fi sampling. Found mine covered in kid stickers and missing a couple keys at recycling drop-off depot in rural Manitoba.
Lovely Holliday vibes! That’s beautiful sounds! I recently found a vss30 in the trash. Of course I took it home and it works, only the volume isn’t adjustable anymore. I love the crunchy sound and the ease of use…..
I have quite a nice collection of synths now, but the SK-1 is one of my favourite keyboards. I bought it for 2€ on a fleamarket and sank a lot of time into it back when I didn't have the money to buy pro gear.
i also had one, it all started with the red and white bontempi organ, then i had a yamaha portasound PS30, then the casio SK1 and casio VL-1, after that i went in more professional kit, the roland TB 303,TR 606, TR 808, and the well known juno 60, i also had a siel, now, i mostly work with keyboard controllers (arturia, roland,m audio) and vsti in a daw
When I saw this I starting getting soooo excited!! I still have mine. That and CZ101 that I used in High School to make beats in the early 90s. Salute.
I bought one of these to go into my key set-up back in the 80s.I bought the MIDI kit for it and ruined it trying to install it. Thankfully I sampled all the prests into my S612. I have since bought another one... Just because it is kinda cool... Nice to see it getting some love.
Still have my original SK-1 from 1985. It's pretty beat and spray painted, but it still works. My first sample was the name of the NHRA Drag racer, "Joe Amato"!
This brings back some memories. I recorded my very first demos on to my Dad's Technics tape deck that had an overdub function, using one side of a pair of headphones as a mic sat on top of the speaker. That must be the better part of 40 years ago now.
Besides the sampling function I love the "Human Voice" preset. If you hit two or more high pitch keys at the same time it sounds more like a flock of seagulls though🤣. And the crude additive synth or drawbar organ preset is great for running through dirt pedals, ring mods and other FSU stuff.
There was a Yamaha the same time or a little later that was full bandwidth and longer sample time. I have one. Neither of my 2 SK1s turn on, and they were kept in their optional gig bags.
Lol, back in the days this keyboard was in the store, i remember i sampled "hello do you know the time" in it and used it when people walked by, that was fun :)
I had one in the 80s and had way too much fun with it, but at some point in the early 2000s it stopped sampling so I gave it to a friend, still have some recordings I used it on, loads of fun for a cheap price.
"Recorded and played back more farts and curse words than any other instrument". How many times has the Toy Symphony demo song been played using farts? An infinite number.
I got one of these for Christmas but I was very naughty. I found it hidden ready to be wrapped up, so I took it to school and we all had a giggle, the music teacher loved it, then I put it carefully back in the box & acted surprised on Christmas Day. I’ve still got it & use it 😂 Few years later I got the SK200 which apparently are rare now
I bought the Yamaha VSS-30 brand new as one of my earliest instruments in late 1987, and I still have and use it today. A year or two later I did some fairly geeky bandwidth comparisons between it and the SK-1, and was quite disappointed to find the SK-1 simply truncated all waveform data above around 9khz, while the VSS-30 could be turned into a crunchy nightmare through extreme EQ and a noise gate. The VSS-30 is also dramatically more flexible with its "in-camera" sample editing capabilities, and ability to alter the amp envelope of all built-in sounds. I had little interest in the SK-1 from that point on.
The Casio had little amp envelope presets that you could switch on for a sample ( like a bit extra Release - at least the SK-5 did ), extremely limited.
Putting the two machines into context, I recall the VSS-30 was much more expensive than the SK-1 (which I bought new for only £69.00 in 1986). You get what you pay for. The Yamaha is a much more capable machine and I confess that I wanted a VSS-30 back in the 80s. Bear in mind the maker of the WoFi didn't quote the VSS-30, choosing the SK-1 instead as his inspiration. I find the charm of the SK-1 is its limitations and I've been a fan of Casiotones since the VL-1. The SK-1 is as important to me as my Akai S3000XL, both being old tech I've used on my musical journey.
@@tonverfall_studio I think you are comparing apples with pears. I'm not sure that $99 equated to a price of £99 here in the UK for a VSS-30. £69 for the Casio was a week's wages for me back in '86, which I do remember being the economic reality for me in spite of both models being bottom of the range. We didn't have the luxury of YT and we couldn't easily compare the spec of both models, on the web, we had to wait until they were reviewed in magazines in the UK such as E&MM, One Two Testing or International Musician & Sound Maker.
