  • Oliver is foraging for edible mushrooms in a pine forest in the Southern Highlands of NSW, Australia. The two types of mushrooms he is going to identify are: Saffron Milk Caps and Slippery Jacks. There are many types of edible mushrooms and many can be found in pine forests.
1:11 How to identify the Saffron Milk Cap edible mushroom
1:19 How to identify the Slippery Jack edible mushroom
You need to be careful when foraging for wild food as some mushrooms are poisonous, in this video Oliver finds the Amanita Muscaria also known as Fly Agaric which can be fatal if ingested.
2:48 How to identify the Amanita Muscaria
Please be careful when foraging for mushrooms - this video is by no means a definitive guide and you really should go with an expert to help you correctly identify mushrooms on your first few forages in a pine forest.

Agree with the sentiment that foraging for mushrooms fills one with a special feeling, a connection to nature, and it's free food haha.

I agree with the connection to nature and it's just so much fun, and trippy like entering a new world with fungi everywhere.

Possibly do some research on the Amanita Muscaria (fly agaric).

Very nice! I felt like I was watching a t.v. documentary. Stunning videography, nice music, great narration. I hope to see more soon, especially mushroom videos. We have similar varieties in Canada.

What about a shot of the mushrooms with an added detailed description? That would have been helpful.

Fungi also plays a huge part in the trees ability to communicate. Trees truely do communicate with one another.

You have to be pretty fit to forage. It's not always like drive your car there, walk around for 5 minutes and hey presto!

Did you know that you can actually dry the Milk Cap Mushrooms ( use them later in sups stews and rissoles or mushroom sauce perhaps )

For sure. And pickle and freeze (usually after some kind of cooking). But my approach is to share the saffrons out fresh and 'store' them in friends' bellies; and save the dehydrator space for the slippery jacks (which I think improves them).

And if you have a surplus of mushrooms, they dry naturally very well.

That fly amanita if boiled and handled correctly can be eaten without getting high. If you want to get a active effect eat it raw or undercooked. Its not deadly and has been used by tribal members. If in doubt reaserch it out

@@jims4592 No it isn't. Amanita muscaria is a popular magic mushroom here in New Zealand. People just dry them out completely before eating them. I have seen them picked, dried, and eaten with 'magic' effect soon after and no sickness whatsoever. Anyway, don't take my word for it. There are plenty of documentaries and info on amanita muscaria.

    • @natelion1022

@@jims4592 They do grow in Perth. If you check the site or app iNaturalist you can see sightings near Bunbury. But, I would be very careful with those anyway. Apparently if you don't dry them out completely it's guaranteed violent diarrhea and vomiting.

the amount of muscarin in fly amanita has extreme variations in each cap, some may be mild and in some there is enough to kill a human. look into the research, people have died from eating this mushroom. and yes there is also historical and current use of this mushroom being used recreationally, mainly in scandinavia (also by reindeers) but you are putting your life at risk by consuming one.
