one other way to remove the background is...go to files where you have saved the photo,select the photo,click option "more" and than the first option remove background.

When I use the gradient function, the color comes through clear and Bridget. The dark color is muted, like it is covering the hair, not a bright color. I have gone through it many times. Do you have any suggestions?

You can try to drag the colors inside Gradient map to opposite sides a little and get different results
