About me:
My work focuses on the human figure. I've given drawing and painting workshops and demos throughout the United States and Europe. I have been making realist drawing and painting tutorials for two years now that I release through my Patreon page.
The real secret to most drawing is 1. 90% observation, 10% actual drawing. Taking the time to really analyze the subject. 2. Drawing very VERY lightly. Darken only when you are absolutely sure that proportions lines details etc. are correct. 3. Usually drawing quickly and fluidly but I beg to differ. Take your time and remember that art is about self improvement not a competition. 4. Save all your art. Even the bad ones so you can also study and reflect of your improvment. Also you can retry the subject again now that your skills are better! 5. Art is a skill not gift. Anyone can learn to draw/paint. Patience is an absolute must and most rewarding after a few years. 6. Dedication. Take time to do it. Period. Just a few minutes a day or an hour or two or more if you become skilled.
People will argue with me to hell and back believing that art is a gift from the heavens.
@@yvonneoy3124 yeah no good artist is good without a lot of practice. however, i do think that sometimes two artists that spend an equal amount of time practising, one may adapt and learn better than the other one. art is just like any subject, you need to spend a lot of time on it but sometimes some might learn faster than others.
@@oight It also depends on what you are learning. I had a tough time learning digital art. I'm good at drawing and painting
You are absolutely correct sir
Nice!
Hey, Cesar! Nice to hear from you, man. Keep kicking a## on that roadtrip!
@@stephenbaumanartwork thanks brother
Guys, please collab. Please.
Santos is the man
I am star struck now with them both talking to each other. Lol
Been doing this Bargue drawings because it's among the things that they teach you in the Florence Academy of Art and I cannot cost myself an education like that, so this video of yours is gold to me.
Absolutely agree. I tried some bargue exercises on my own but I didn’t have any fundamental skills needed to do them properly. I just spent a ton of time measuring, not knowing when something was good enough. Only when I had an instructor at an atelier that knew what she was doing did I actually learn how to properly do them an understand why it was so important to do them.
Thanks for sharing!
When Cesar Santos make a comment - I’d say that’s a more then good enough to watch and listen and I did very interesting Thanks.
Well said!
This is why we all enjoyed those books of connecting the dots when we were kids :=)
I also bought my copy at the Dahesh Museum in the IBM Building in Manhattan. I was studying at the Art Students League at the time, under Costa Vavagiakis, (one of a number of teachers I had there).
Great video and great introduction to Bargue drawing, looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you for this great explanation. Also good to know there are many approaches to drawing these. Would love to see a tutorial on these soon xx
Thanks! Im just getting into Bargue, it's great practice by itself, but it's much better to do it with some guidance.
Awesome- love the concept bargue used on these- so informative but yet simple- a key factor a blocking in a life painting portrait in oils
Good point!
wow, i recently discovered ur channel and I a so happy to ahve found such an educalationally rich channel to learn from.
This video is awesome and gives me a good direction. Thanks🙂
This is quite useful.
I've been following your tutorials and dedicated this whole year to learning to draw with pencils alone.
I believe I'm making progress.
WOW, So clear and very understandable I loved the way you are teaching us and keep it up!
Thank you! Will do!
You put out such great content, your explanations of key concepts are always very thorough and well thought out, and your passion for art shines though in your delivery in such an inspiring way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.
Thank you!!

Muy valioso el vídeo maestro Bauman, saludos desde Perú
I want to know that to when we want to study bargue plates ? And what type of improvement we get by doing this bargue drawing course? @stephenbauman
Thanks as always.
you may want to raise the volume of your videos a few dbs :)
Noted, thanks!
Thanks!
Welcome!
Super
How am I just finding your channel?!
Darn it, great content. Here my good sir take my sub
Thanks!
Right,right,right,right,right,right,right ,and even more rights,right.
What is the difference between bargue method and Block-in method? to me see the same thing!!
Thanks for video
Informative!
Great video Stephen!
Glad you think so!
great video
Thanks!
Great😍👌🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Loved this. This helps me understand better Drawing Essentials part 1. Thank you! You mention that there several books about how to use the Bargue drawings; do you recommend anyone in particular.
Glad it was helpful! I haven't used any of the books myself so, honestly I can't recommend any one specifically. I am sure they are all pretty similar.
@@stephenbaumanartwork Thanks, Stephen. I asked that question too early. After asking I watched your Bargue 2 and 3 videos, and they (together with what is in your drawing essentials about Bargue) should be more than enough. Hey, maybe you would write in the future a book about your insights on how to best use Bargue... ;-)
Do you think the Bargue course should be updated? If so, how would you go about improving it?
Wow! Huge question. I’ll have to take some time to reflect on that.
Hey Steve, what size should the plates be scaled up to (from the book) before drawing them? I read the original plates were 24x18 inches... is that what you'd recommend? Most videos i've seen seem to have them a lot smaller, at around A4 size
Some can be copied at a4 size. others, the more advanced mostly, should be a bit larger than that.
Some parts are incredibly quick, did you speed up the video? It would be a lot nicer to listen to if the talking was a bit slower. Nice explanations though.
I had to check to see it wasn't set to 1.5 speed
What is the difference between cast drawing and bargue drawing?
Cast is 3D Bargue is flat- 2D
After doing the Bargue you can take a crack at The Julien Course www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZDFPPH4 it has some beautiful drawings & is more refined IMHO
Great tip. Thanks friend
Sir what do you mean when you say you will only get half of what you should from drawing the bargues if you don’t get any feed back? I really don’t like the way they look but I would for sure take my time to do it if it will help build my art skills a lot.
2 things: to know that you are interpreting the concepts as intended, and to be pushed beyond the level that you think you are aspiring to. These things are more easily attained from outside.
@@stephenbaumanartwork thank you for always replying sir you’re appreciated!
Was this sped up?
I think it's on 110x, so just a little.
I usually watch videos at 2x the speed but with this one I couldn't understand anything above 1.25x XD now this explains it :p Thank you for the Series Stephen!
Hi, I would like to know, are Bargue's exercises in your opinion and experience preliminary to studying anatomy? Or is it better to have studied anatomy first?
My guess is that you learn anatomy as you do bargue drawings, since the starting bargue plates doesn’t seem to require you to know the anatomy of the body but towards the end you probably need to.
So this tequnique can be used for any subject i wish to draw?
For you, what's exercise or practice to improve faster in painting?
Alla prima every time: ua-cam.com/video/rRAgrmT57j8/v-deo.html&lc=Ugxb0nFl1gB8sMQlTSh4AaABAg
Unrelated question - apart from realism, do you draw from imagination at all? Did you study guys like andrew loomis?
I don't do it much- but I have in the past. My studies these days are pretty specific to my practice so there can be a bit of Loomis but mainly painters like Sargent, Duran, and Lepage.
Stephen Bauman Good to know, thanks!
Hi Stephen. Question if I may. I've accidentally began a layer of shadow with my 2H (graphite) as opposed to my 2B. Once I've completed this layer can I then layer over with the 2B or is best to now get as dark as possible with layers of 2H only? Any help would be appreciated.
Go to 2b. It's possible that the surface of the value area gets a bit "sealed" by the 2h, depending on how much of it you put on, but you should be able to add value with your 2b.
@@stephenbaumanartwork That's exactly what I was wondering. I think it's a 50/50 scenario as I'd layered more than once in initial area before I noticed. Won't do that again! Thanks
is there any drawing courses similar to this book but for still life
Not that I am currently aware of.
Let me know if you find one!
If you mute this video it looks like he’s doing sign language.
Can you add another translate to video like arabic ?
I would not have thought it possible to talk for more than 5 minutes on Bargue drawings...
I think there is still more to say in this series as well 😅
i wish i could understand languages
i dont need, i need
i wish i could understand English
i wish i could draw very good, masterful so i dont need to have great English
In short, i love draw so lets try the best :D have fun
Hyper realistic " artists" should learn from you their "drawings" are not art!
Talk slower and enunciate, please. When clear, the content is worth it 👍
♈️🦉
I understood perfectly, maybe it's your ears lol
Speak slower.
To much talking, and little else.
