    Great informative video. I'm back to bikes after 36 years and currently doing my I.A.M course. I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have done and has impoved my confidence no end, it has also improved my car driving awareness and observtion. I would highly recommend these advanced courses to all motorcycle riders.

    Thought i had watched all the advanced motorbike videos but missed this excellent overview - have my ROSPA advanced test on Saturday in sunny Sussex - your videos have helped so much - thank you John

    Great video; I'm a former IAM Observer, ROSPA Gold advanced rider but have just returned to riding after a 15 year absence. I still have my "Motorcycle Roadcraft - The Police Rider's Handbook and the IAM "Pass your advanced motorcycle test" book and have studied them constantly. However, after so long from riding, I recognise how rusty I am and that I need to relearn my previous skills and knowledge. Your video has brought a lot of things back to me, so thanks!

    Awesome video. I've passed my IAM advanced exam in October with a F1RST, and it has been a dream of mine to start riding as well. I'm looking forward to do the IAM course for riding as well, and this video has been a great demonstration on the similarities and differences to the system while driving and riding.

    Trying not to be critical, as all training information is helpful, but there were some situations in this that felt more like a pursuit training video, rather than an advanced safe riding video. There were some dodgy overtakes approaching junctions, and some questionable positioning at times. At 16:35, "we accelerate once we've got the bike tipped in". No, we tip the bike in on balanced throttle, and then accelerate when we can see the exit to stand the bike up. It might be worth reviewing this and evaluating some of the decisions from a safety point of view, which is ultimately what advanced riding is all about. Also curious how you do the shoulder checks without the camera moving.......

    At around 3 minutes 7 seconds approaching the junction you do a left shoulder check when the road and pavement are clear of traffic or pedestrians and you're travelling at a relatively low speed and no shoulder check going onto the motorway. I am doing the Ipsga and get confused as to the necessity of shoulder checks in some circumstances. There was no shoulder check going onto the motorway or mirrors or shoulder check at the root board overtake but a left shoulder check passing the slow moving tractor.

    Do you think you could do a similar demonstration ride with commentary but riding around the town, explaining filtering, etc.? thanks

  • @transporteruk

    Simply flawless ride, a real pleasure to watch. I particularly found the section on ‘filtering’ being included a must as it’s such a controversial topic for the uneducated. Similar to straightening corners for better views and increased vehicle stability. Both these actions are viewed differently by different road users but basically I take the stance that, if the manoeuvre is safe, doesn’t impede others making progress and has some benefit your your progress then it should not be frowned upon, providing it’s legal obviously 😁. Anyway, loving your videos, keep it going.

      Definitely not flawless Fraser! Editing is a wonderful thing, but there is no such thing as a perfect ride or drive. I’ll upload the unedited 1 hour+ version in a few weeks so you can see the ride “warts & all”.

    Great video, it’s amazing how much information us bikers have to digest during a simple ride out. We’re a family of riders and we’re looking at getting on a course like this, if not this one. We’re from Bolton, Bury.

    Very useful, thanks. I'd like to see a video or just some commentary on your use of the brakes, particularly when approaching corners as it's one thing I have found lots of conflicting information about.

    • @ThaSideWeed
      @ThaSideWeed 4 роки тому

      You mainly have 2 options. Either apply brakes if needed before the corner, harder to fuck up. Front has most stopping power due to weight transfer. Back stabilizes bike.
      Option 2, trail braking. Easier to fuck up, a bit more skill dependent.
      Back brake when cornering basically straightens up the bike when done too aggressively, which is a nono for when you want it leaned over. Adding a small amount is beneficial in some cases.
      Do your own research, get comfy with the controls, see what comes naturally, take a course, etc.
      Pretty good advice to generally not find yourself in 3 separate pieces on the nearest wall, is to keep your speed where you can manage it, besides the usual gear requirements nigh every instructional bike vid has pointed out.

    Hi Reg - quick question if you don't mind. I've got my ROSPA test this Friday. Re your filter at just after 11.20 . Is it ok to filter right to the front ? I was under the impression you had to not overtake the first car in the queue ? Or is that just at a pedestrian crossing ? Thanks

    Great to see a motorcycle being well ridden. Could perhaps make a video sometime for car drivers (and bikers) to warn of dangers of badly ridden bikes, e.g. racing bikers hanging over the solid white line on narrow blind right hand bend at the apex (when they should be keeping nearside). Another good video would be looking at road surfaces, e.g. triangles of gravel in middle of junctions e.g. when turning left. Also include some wet weather work, as even if you onlymintend riding in the dry, the unexpected can happen. I'd never dare ride a bike on the road, but I'll console myself with these videos, so look forward to next one. Many thanks.

    Thanks for another brilliant video. Although I’m a car driver this was hugely informative. Jealous of how much choice of line there is on a bike!
    At 26.05, your overtake leaves you very exposes to something exiting the junction/entrance on the right... I thought the idea was to time the overtake to avoid this ... maybe the view into the junction was better than it appears onthe video?

  • @robertwilson54

    Can I ask why you enter the hatched area to filter it says you can only use this areas in a emergency, and if it’s a hatched area with a solid white line around it you should never enter, I’m not picking this is a genuine question I I was told it is a ghost island and not be used, thanks

    In previous Advanced training we always straight lined bends where safe to do so but RoSPA Advanced training 18 months ago stated that we no longer straight line bends on the grounds that Roadcraft and HC says that we must be able to stop in the distance we can see to be clear “on our side of the road”. Is that mistaken or has it moved on again?

    • @RegLocal
      @RegLocal  2 роки тому +1

      That rule has always existed in Roadcraft Steve and its never prevented me from straightening bends as long as its safe, legal and brings an advantage.

      @@RegLocal I suspect it is a zealous interpretation. If I can see it is clear, safe and it improves not only my view but also my visibility then I do it. I’m retaking the Advanced test soon and wondered if there is a consistent interpretation… it appears not. Thank you.

    Thanks Reg, but how come at the beginning of the video, you didn’t point the bike more to the right at the stop sign? Something I was taught to do and also pass onto other associates

    • @RegLocal
      @RegLocal  Рік тому +2

      I don’t like that approach to T junctions. It forces a more extreme shoulder check to the left, whereas a 90° approach gives a more consistant view in both directions. The argument that it makes the turn easier is in my view trumped by the improved safety of a better view to the left.

    Hi Reg , I have watched a lot of advanced videos. One in particular stresses that you should not be braking and changing down the gears , you scrub speed off first then select your gear. Hover correct me if I am mistaken but did you brake and change gear. What is the correct way?

    To be honest, it is very rushed with a lot of important content missing, when giving a Commentary it's important to explain why you move well into the near side on the approach to a right hand bend. It's much easier for your observer to understand what your doing and the benefits of doing so..

      Jock, It's a while since I did my RoSPA tests. Pre-ride checks, BETOPS/POWDERY incl. Static brake checks are all very much expected to be understood and able to articulate if required. You"d be expected to advise your Examiner that you would plan yo undertake a moving brake test, if safe to do so. Just don't then forget to do it! :-D

    Thanks for that Reg. A couple of questions: Would it not be better to use the oncoming lane to pass some of those cyclists given your speed differential? With the short, sharp, overtakes, are these 3-stage, or are they momentums? For a 3 stage I was taught to move out, reassess and only then fire the gun. here's some of mine ua-cam.com/video/gGx2uFGMAjk/v-deo.html

    Nice ride, thanks for sharing.
    I noticed that at 11:28 you filtered to the front of the queue and overtook the lead vehicle at the lights. I got a pull from the police doing the exact same manoeuvre. The copper was quite reasonable and didn't give me a ticket. What is the IAM/ ROSPA take on it?
    *Not* a criticism, I'm just looking to improve and I find your videos invaluable.
    Thanks again.

    • @RegLocal
      @RegLocal  4 роки тому

      No issues with filtering as long as it’s safe & appropriate. It’s perfectly acceptable for both IAM and RoSOA advanced bike tests. Also, see rule 88 of the Highway Code.

    • @michaelggriffiths
      @michaelggriffiths 4 роки тому

      Thank you, I said as much to the policeman, but he said that I should not have overtaken the lead vehicle, he maintained that it's an offence to overtake the lead vehicle when filtering post stationary traffic that has stopped at a set of traffic lights.
      Ever since then I've been hesitant to do it, even though nearly every other rider does it.

    • @LeChardon

      @@michaelggriffiths Hi, When you're friendly officer took the opportunity to engage and educate, were you within zigzags (crossing rather than a junction) lines? If yes, then it was because you're not permitted to pass the foremost point of a motor vehicle within the controlled (zigzags) area of the crossing. I'm pretty sure it's three points if caught.
      Also, if you enter a cycle box/Advance Stop Line, you might earn yourself a wee chat, or an earful from a cycle as they sail through the red light! ;-)

      @@LeChardon hi, and thanks for replying.
      That's a good point about the zigzags and worth remembering, but there weren't any at that particular junction. From what I'm gathering the officer may just have been a little 'officious' although he was nice enough.

    Reg great video. Quick question though, i noticed early on (5.50 in) you offsided a bend. I thought IAM didn't do that, or is that only in Scotland? Appreciate your feedback.

    • @RegLocal
      @RegLocal  4 роки тому +2

      The IAM are fine with a little offsiding as shown in this video, i.e. through a right-hander with a good clear view all the way through the bend. Have a look at my video on offsiding for more info: ua-cam.com/video/YWgfQ7sW5F0/v-deo.html

    • @mikeroberts

      @@RegLocal Cheers mate, I'll refresh myself on that video too, Thanks for the clarification.

    • @LeChardon
      @LeChardon 4 роки тому +1

      Whilst we all understand and agree, and would actively promote offsiding/straightlining bends (opp carriageway, when safe to do so), those south of the Border need to appreciate that Police Scotland do not advocate offsiding, and therefore IAM (in Scotland) do not promote this. I know, I know. It seems nonsensical, it's very clear, as Roadcraft is ;-) that offsiding into the opp carriageway will keep the bike upright, and therefore maximise grip, and visibility, etc. etc. However, until PS soften their stance on this, tis a no-no!!

    • @mikeroberts
      @mikeroberts 4 роки тому

      @@LeChardon Serious question then ... can I not overtake North of the Border? I can fully understand (and agree mostly) that true offsiding to gain more view is not required riding within the posted limits. Straightening is a different matter. I wasn't aware of a change in the law heading North. Do you have any links to advice from Police Scotland or IAM on this matter?
