  • CLEVES, Ohio (WKRC) - Winning a game is a moment, but this moment is one that’s extra special because she did it.
On Sept. 29th, 16-year-old Delaney Day kicked a game-winning field goal in overtime to lift her Taylor Yellow Jackets past Finneytown in a high school football game.
“My mind was blanking, I wasn’t thinking about it, just went out there and kicked it,” said Day.
She says she was nervous but her teammate Tyler calmed her down and she nailed the 32-yard kick to win the game.
“The whole team has been supportive,” said Day. “There’s going to be haters out there but they’ve been great, they’ve been awesome.”
A few weeks before hitting the game-winning field goal, Day became the first girl in Taylor High School history to score a point in a football game.
“She busted her butt like the guys did in the summer, working to get better and she has improved vastly from day one until now,” said Taylor Head Coach Mark Miller.
Day is one of a handful of young ladies around the Tri-State playing football with the boys. In Milford, Grace Ertel is the kicker for the Milford High School Eagles. Dayton, Kentucky and Lawrenceburg, Indiana also have girl kickers. Walnut Hills also has a girl playing linebacker.
“I think it’s great. It’s not something you see every day. I know Lawrenceburg has a female kicker and it was kind of neat on week one to have the matchup of the female kickers. If you looked a hundred times you’d see it once and you saw it that Friday night,” said Miller.
Although this is Day’s first year on the football team, she’s no stranger to competition. Day is a member of the golf team and the cheerleading squad.

I mean obviously she isn't a powerful kicker, but she was trusted to kick during a crucial moment in overtime. I can tell you that at my school school (it was Christian and Conservative) a girl would be denied from the team in a heartbeat even if there was no kicker. They would have some random player kick it even if it went 6 feet in the air. It's really great that this girl was able to kick and make multiple field goals.
It obviously doesn't disprove the fact that men are, on average, stronger and faster than women, but it shows that girls and women shouldn't be counted out just for being female. Not sure why it's so hard for some guys to just accept that she was capable of making a field goal and deserved the chance.

There have been girls who played high-contact positions. Olympic weightlifter Holley Mangold was a lineman for her high school team, and she was heavier than her seven-time Pro Bowl selection brother Nick.

30 yards? My one year old granddaughter can kick a 30 yarder. Ok maybe my 9 year old granddaughter. LOL I could kick one but at 70 years old my old hip is in bad shape. I might could kick a 5 yarder if they lowered the goalposts to 3 feet. Well maybe not. I could hit it with my cane but then I would fall over.
