  • 🌧Rain Garden Tour⛈ - In this video I do a short tour of a Rain Garden installation on the NCSU campus. It is a beautiful example of a garden with a function. It filters rainwater and allows most of it to simply soak into the soil.

    The plants are obviously newly planted. I will put up a few photos on Instagram this year to show it mature. Thanks for watching.

      The drain should have been higher or else they are defeating the purpose of having a raingarden. That's a big design flaw...

    I LOVE this video. I'm a civil engineer and do primarily highway design but it makes my little hippie engineer heart happy to see this kind of ingenuity in urban streets and developments. I can't help but look at them all because they're rare in Kentucky but I try to learn in case there's ever a chance I can implement something on a project.

      I'm the same way. There are a few breweries in the state that have done amazing things with them. Should be all houses.

    I'm an NCSU grad and while I was there found some amazing garden spaces tucked away in all kinds of places. I hope you do more videos from the University! I'll need to at Kilgore to my list of places to visit, too.

    What a beautiful and functional space. I love to see things like this. With the guided tour of course. Lol. Question...I bought a weeping Japanese Maple and have planted it in a large pot. Zone 8b. Partial sun. It started budding up and has now opened leaves and is really growing great. There is also a limb growing at the base about 1-2” above the spike out of the root stock and it has gorgeous leaves but are a different color entirely, although looks to be a Japanese Maple as well. All in all the whole tree is about 3.5’ tall from the soil. Do I cut out the root stock branch or leave it? Thanks Jim.

      Cut it off quickly. It will probably do it again. Just keep that one cut back or it will take over quickly.

    Should butterfly bushes already be showing new growth on it? I have two that were very young that I cut all the way back bc the branching was not great on them. I have seen no signs of growth from the base as of yet.

    Thanks for reminding us of this. What a wonderful job they did. We are in the process of installing a mini version of this from 2 corners of our home right now from where our downspouts flow. It’ll be a dry creek bed when not full of water, with a small pond at the bottom of the hill. We are planting crape myrtle, perennial hibiscus, native azaleas, iris, cannas, and confederate rose. Simple, but effective! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙌💚🌧☔️🌸🌿

    So cool to see; lots of ideas and inspiration, right?! By the way, your yard looks so good towards the beginning there. Have your plants settled and grown in a bit over the last week, or am I just imagining that?

    What's the small tree with red foliage the looks like it just had one upright branch? What would someone need to know to design a rain garden at home?

    Would this garden be considered a bog garden or wet garden?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  4 роки тому

      It actually dries out in between. So these plants get breaks. Bog gardens would need plants that could stay wet constantly. Good question.

    I need a dwarf shrub that will be a screening shrub around an above ground pool. We don’t want it to grow more than 4-5 ft in height. We live in zone 7. It needs to be deer resistant since we live on a farm.

    cant help but thinking they probably wouldnt need a rain garden there if there werent 20 sidewalks all over the place..

    That Buckeye is amazing! My wife and I were just at the Abby Nature Preserve last week and got to see some native, shrub-like Buckeyes in bloom down here on the NC Coast.

    Wish you would have explained better how water moves through this garden. Does the overflow pipe drain one garden into the next or to the storm drain? The drain caps look to be in the lower part of the garden so I don’t see how the garden can have much water holding capacity. The swirls are very attractive but don’t seem to have much function? You identified all the plants but did not say where they work in the garden (edge plant vs able to endure a few hours of standing water).
