I purchased this pedal a little while ago and put it on my secondary board. Whilst my main board has a big sky I have to say I am quite a fan of the RV. I really like how much easier the display is to use and understand. I also really like how it only requires 225mA to run so I can plug it right into my voodoo labs with the rest of my board instead of needing a whole separate power supply to power the 500mA big sky. After fooling around with it for a while you can make sounds that sound just as good as the big sky. I am tired of people bashing products just because they are from different companies. It's the musician who is in charge of their gear and how their tone sounds in the end. I'm also not saying that one is better than the other. I am saying that there are pedals on the market now that are just as good but not as expensive. In the end it always comes down to personal preference, so I'd highly recommend going out and trying each pedal for yourself and choose the one that feels right for you.
The routing’s what sold me - I run I/O A at the start of my rig and I/O B at the end, so Bank A’s full of reverbs and delays that run before fuzzes for shoegaze and Bank B’s for Long atmospheric stuff that everything runs into
+Dave Kuhn Dave, are you mad because you bought a BigSky and something newer/nicer came along? It's nobody's fault but your own if you can't accept that Boss just gave Strymon a big run for their money. You haven't played this pedal in person. Your opinion is moot.
Im not a big fan of that Strymon sheen sound which is why I am looking at this and the Empress, much prefer the sound of old rack reverbs (The SRV2000 mode makes me keen).
How many people have to say that BOSS is good before people start believing it? I do want to hear a comparison between this and the big sky. I'm already sold on the Boss I just like watching videos
Asillyhobo agree. They take a while to modernize sometimes. My comment was almost as much to myself as all the other haters out there. I had boss in the beginning, I moved to more "boutique" pedals for a while, now I have a mix of both.
everyone trying to jump on that boutique game... Then you start watching rig rundowns, and see that everyone uses the basic boss and ibanez pedals lol.
Hey Andy ! I´m just dying of your playing. Incredible really. You make me want to buy all of these pedals , like it should make me a better guitarist :D
I love the 500 line. While I stand strong in my opinion that the Eventide Space is the best pedal reverb, the DD-500 is an excellent contender for best big-box delay, and I don't think an argument can be made that the MD-500 is superseded by the Möbius or Modfactor.
FlagadaJohn i think what he ment was they are mostly jams made to hilight the given pedal.no names given . Know this though ,Andy is honored and grateful for his guitar and pedal loving fans , and there are thousands of you. Awesome!
Thats dope! However a lot of the videos Andy plays sweet riffs from songs. Some of which I find really cool and would love to know where they came from, so I can listen to the songs myself and maybe even learn the riffs/songs. I feel like it wouldn't be too difficult to at least just list them in the description of each video :). I've noticed a good amount of other people commenting on the pedal demos about what songs Andy was playing. Anywho, great demo! I'm dying to get this pedal.
I A-B Test The Boss 500 Series against a Fractal FX8 the 500 series is 1 whole step above the Fractal The Boss 500 SPring Reverb was a little harder to set. When I did compare it to my Blackface Super Reverb It did come through in Spades when I did
So I'm looking at using this as my only reverb and delay an I'm really curious about the delay options. What kinds of delay are available and what subdivisions are there? Also if I use the dual reverb could I put a delay with each one and have two running at the same time?
Each reverb is accompanied with optional and separated delay function. It;s a standard boss clean delay type for each reverb with subdivision and beats per minute. Boss is also generous to add one modulation control you may use (I believe it's chorus-soundalike). If you use dual reverb, you can add both with two delays with different settings, so if you choose to activate both A and B, it will run simultaneously.
I think we are all over the shimmer reverb! It was cool when it came out... now its been beat to death by every pedal company out there. Yes... I'm anti-shimmer!
Am a church player. Can confirm. But yeah, it does seem weird that it took TC so long to get on it. Now we just need them to release a HOF x4 or something to compete with stuff like the RV-500.
Thanks very detailed info awesome play. I already just purchased a used Eventide Blackhole before realising that RV500 is on sale in my area $200 😆 Is it worth getting or already overkill to mix with Blackhole? Thanks
QUESTION: Is ping-pong delay available on this unit? (I see nothing about it in the RV-500 manual, but there are probably a lot of options that are visible only on the unit.) Thanks!
That's the goal of the video.I think you better wait a bit until the honey moon is over make a good research watch all demoes and then decide to say buy to your cash.
Andy, man! Why you never made a demo of Strymon Big or bluesky but you made one for Rv500 are you not allowed to demo Strymon stuff, cause I've seen you demoing the El Cap and DIG.
just chiming in to say THANKS for the quality vids over the years.. you guys and "knobs" are head and shoulders above the rest. warm reagards, from new zealand. - home of REDWITCH pedals \m/ \m/ increase the peace
Strymon kind of sells itself... they prob don't need to get themselves out there because tons of people know about them. Personally think they are a bit overpriced but hey they are quality.
With the Katana, you can choose from 5 popular reverb options in the software interface, load up to 3 into the amp at a time, and switch between those three by toggling on the amp or using the separate footswitch.
The Big Sky and Neunaber Wet still sound better. More functionality doesn't mean better. The Big Sky and Wet have more magic and other worldly sound to them
Dave Kuhn that "magic" you mention is a very recognizable tonal artifact that I call the "Strymon effect". It is unmistakable and makes everyone who uses them sound like clones of each other. There are so many videos out there with guys endlessly playing volume swells thru a bigsky (Zzzzzzzzzz) and pat themselves on the back at how "ambient" they are. Sort of jumped the shark at this point...
Softlightsymphony [test vid] yeah, I was one of those guys and this 100% on the nose. The Strymon reverbs are great, but they all sound like a special effect rather than something natural...and they've been done to death by ambient/post rock players.

Matthew Del great comment. so what is the needed voltage? still unclear about it thanks
The routing’s what sold me - I run I/O A at the start of my rig and I/O B at the end, so Bank A’s full of reverbs and delays that run before fuzzes for shoegaze and Bank B’s for Long atmospheric stuff that everything runs into
wait - you mean you run it so you basically have two separate reverb pedals in one box?? Why have I not seen anybody mention this before?!
I really like that shimmer without the octave.
Lol
Hidden in that reverb trail is the sound of Strymon pooping their breeches.
LMAO!!!
ktuluflux sorry but no. This pedal still doesn't sound as magical or unique as the Big Sky. Strymon won't poop their pants over anything anytime soon.
True, Strymon are still on the toilet because of H9
+Dave Kuhn
Dave, are you mad because you bought a BigSky and something newer/nicer came along?

I'm already sold on the Boss I just like watching videos
Nathan Brown I've used a DD-3 and a OS-2 for years.
Boss has always been good, they just have moments of being slow with updates to some of their pedals.
A lot of them are probably stepping on boutique reproductions of early Japanese Boss pedals without realising it.
I have always wondered how Andy gets so much attack and brightness when strumming without using a pick.....I guess he is magic
Chris Hepburn he grows his nails
one of the best reviews out there.. better recorded and not tweaked to 12 as in "soggy wet": I love this pedal!
man, that lick in the intro, so sweet. What a nice chord progression! EDIT: and just learned it. Thank goodness for 0.5 video playback speed.
Always love "Boincy" reverb 😉
Bounce and Boing in one!
ProGuitarShopDemos 👍
Hey Andy ! I´m just dying of your playing. Incredible really. You make me want to buy all of these pedals , like it should make me a better guitarist :D
can't waittttt I loveeee the rv6. psyched for md500 demo too!!! please include classic electric mistress and small stone/phase 90 samples lol =)
Good demo! I still dislike “Shimmer” - but I like this pedals sounds a lot - very usable! Pete.
I love the 500 line. While I stand strong in my opinion that the Eventide Space is the best pedal reverb, the DD-500 is an excellent contender for best big-box delay, and I don't think an argument can be made that the MD-500 is superseded by the Möbius or Modfactor.
I'm not digging the parameter overkill and programming.
The space echo sounds particularly lush
Andy! Can you pleasseee start posting the song names that you play in these demos! :)
Well, these were all Andy tunes.
ProGuitarShopDemos so what? don't you know you have a fan club? ;)
FlagadaJohn i think what he ment was they are mostly jams made to hilight the given pedal.no names given . Know this though ,Andy is honored and grateful for his guitar and pedal loving fans , and there are thousands of you. Awesome!

Man, this was some of your best playing/songwriting ever, I think. So impressive
I A-B Test The Boss 500 Series against a Fractal FX8 the 500 series is 1 whole step above the Fractal The Boss 500 SPring Reverb was a little harder to set. When I did compare it to my Blackface Super Reverb It did come through in Spades when I did

Demo the RV-500 with MD-500 and DD-500 all together
Using an ES-8 to control them all
I think we are all over the shimmer reverb! It was cool when it came out... now its been beat to death by every pedal company out there. Yes... I'm anti-shimmer!
Michael Marshall It's funny that tc have only just decided to get in on that feature
Kupson, Colin I imagine it will remain popular amongst church players for quite some time longer. It really does lend itself to that application
Am a church player. Can confirm.
But yeah, it does seem weird that it took TC so long to get on it. Now we just need them to release a HOF x4 or something to compete with stuff like the RV-500.
I agree, shimmer's stupid.
Don't shimmer-shame me!
Thanks very detailed info awesome play. I already just purchased a used Eventide Blackhole before realising that RV500 is on sale in my area $200 😆 Is it worth getting or already overkill to mix with Blackhole? Thanks
i have a bunch of pedals to trade towards this RV-500 or MD-500 !!
boss ps-2, fulltone gt-500, EQD Space Spirals, Ibanez CS5, Mr. Black Deluxe Plus
QUESTION: Is ping-pong delay available on this unit? (I see nothing
about it in the RV-500 manual, but there are probably a lot of options
that are visible only on the unit.) Thanks!
How close to the RV5/6 "Modulate" setting can you get? I see it's not a "primary" mode so I'm hoping you can get there somehow
You can't get that close. I was so disapointed I couldn't get those sounds with it!
Wish it had reverse. Although not used extensively, it is very cool to have
I know this is almost a year later, but it does reverse. It's under "non-linear", which can do gate or reverse. Page 13 in the pedal's manual.
it has reverse
What's the OD pedal t the 6:10 mark?
Anyone hear if Boss is planning to release a 200 line reverb? The 500s are just a bit (lot) overkill for what I need.
Nice jangly tele.
What's the song during the shimmer on/off bit? The melody is too familiar but I can't put my finger on it.
Nothing specific, but it does sound like a song!
Well im sold.
That's the goal of the video.I think you better wait a bit until the honey moon is over make a good research watch all demoes and then decide to say buy to your cash.
I bought this pedal about a month ago and I'm selling it for either an Immerse or the Bluesky. It sounds a bit too digital for my taste.
You funny, man
it does sound very digital. but you can easily fix that by rolling back the highs.
I must skip the 44 min ad for TruetoneLounge Good Lord
Can it Surf?
it actually has a substantial drip
Yessssssssssssss
Andy, man! Why you never made a demo of Strymon Big or bluesky but you made one for Rv500 are you not allowed to demo Strymon stuff, cause I've seen you demoing the El Cap and DIG.
If Strymon would like a demo, we'd be happy to make one. Simple as that!
just chiming in to say THANKS for the quality vids over the years.. you guys and "knobs" are head and shoulders above the rest. warm reagards, from new zealand. - home of REDWITCH pedals \m/ \m/
increase the peace
Cheers Jack!

Hold function and havoc are becoming standards.
I heard what u did there. Shine On.
Tanks For Demo!
All the reverbs sound so subtle on the RV500.. I'm afraid it won't be apparent enough in worship mixes with a lot going on.
Well Boss, you've certainly been throwing the cat amongst the pigeons of late.
I've never heard a Boss pedal that I actually liked. Just like the DD500, this also sounds too digital.
someone buy andy a plectrum
Good first song but but i Hate thé shimmer its not guitar. ..
Cant' you just buy a Katana with all this stuffed in there for less? I'm asking not trolling.
No, the Katana is way stripped back from this
With the Katana, you can choose from 5 popular reverb options in the software interface, load up to 3 into the amp at a time, and switch between those three by toggling on the amp or using the separate footswitch.
Worst shimmer ever.
It's not the best I've ever heard, but certainly NOT the worst.
Octavio E. Sánchez Gómez shimme ris a horrible effect that should have been left out. It always sounds cheesy
The Big Sky and Neunaber Wet still sound better. More functionality doesn't mean better. The Big Sky and Wet have more magic and other worldly sound to them
Dave Kuhn that "magic" you mention is a very recognizable tonal artifact that I call the "Strymon effect". It is unmistakable and makes everyone who uses them sound like clones of each other. i wholeheartedly agree with this

Well said. I hate the artificial sounds of strymon shit
