  • How to use UV curable Solder mask paint ?
    Materials Needed:
    1. UV Curable solder mask paint .
    2. Thin plastic sheet.
    3. UV light source -sun light or UV light.
    4. PCB solder mask layer photoplots / printed on transparent sheet eg. OHP sheet. Dark area will be wash away. ie, exposed area become hard.
    5. A piece of glass sheet.
    6. Gasoline or nail polish remover for cleaning unexposed paint.
    How to apply:
    1. Make sure the pre-etched PCB is clean and dry.
    2. Apply 2-3 drop of the paint on the PCB. We need to make a thin lair coating.So the paint quantity depends on your PCB size.
    3. Cover the paint with thin transparent plastic film.
    4. Spread the paint on the PCB with the transparent plastic film.Use squeezer to get rid of the bubble.
    5. Place and align the artwork over the PCB.
    6. Put a piece of glass sheet on top of it. This will help to press it together.
    7. Expose under UV light or sunlight. This will take 1min to 30 min depends on your UV light source and thickness of paint.
    8. Once exposed, peel off the thin plastic sheet and clean the PCB with Acetone or any other oil base solvent.
    9. After cleaning expose it under UV light for a few minutes.
    10.Now your board is ready for soldering.

    even though there isn't a voice over the music isn't bad its nice and soft.
    spread the paint by putting a pane of glass over it and your mask will look 10x better.

    With yours it is very good result.....i have notice that you strangle to cover all the pcb area with such a little solder mask. I did that without success because i put too much on it. How you can tell is enough ?

    I've successfully performed this technique about 25 times in the last year, but spreading the solder mask underneath the film is still really awkward, slow, and inconsistent. Do you have any tips to make the spreading easier?
    By the way, thanks for uploading this. It's been a great help to the students at my university.

      What kind of transparent film do you use? Of all the times I've tried the paint dries to film and liquid paint stays on pcb pads.

    • @KeesHessels
      @KeesHessels 9 місяців тому +1

      i dilute the paste with alcohol and use a airbrush.. You get a much thinner coating which will allow you to see the traces much better (which is MY preference) and it will dry faster as well...

    It looks like you go straight to exposing the mask after applying it. Do you need to let it dry before exposing?

    • @ivanholmes1896
      @ivanholmes1896 7 років тому

      Hi, the UV exposure is the reason that the mask actually dries, so you don't need to let it dry before exposing.

    • @sylabulus
      @sylabulus 7 років тому

      Some masks need pre-drying at 90°C, but the one he used does not need that

    Nice tutorial, but that just seems like way too much hassle to go through for a single PCB after you're done etching. I think I'll stick with solderable lacquer.

    • @cali-co6428

      it's used to block the sunlight or UV rays, so u might get away by putting a black colored paper to the pads.

    how is the solder mask printed on the transparent sheet ? what sheet is that ?

    • @teamja1088
      @teamja1088 Рік тому

      You could use a sheet of transparency film, like the kind our teachers used before the internet was a thing (not sarcasm, just a statement of truth). They still sell those online and at Staples, Office Max, even at Walmart. I do not know if inkjets can be used for this technique as they use an ink, which may be compromised when exposed to the mask chemical (I honestly do not know), or if laser printers are used exclusively because toner is a thermoset plastic, which is very durable and depending on settings and quality of the toner, it is impermeable.

    How would you remove the soldermask in the vias?

    • @nerddub
      @nerddub 5 років тому

      the vias are part of the "Mask" or "Stop" Layer in whatever EDA you are using, which is used to generate the image for the clear film (transparencies work great)

    you can now buy soldermask film all you do is put it on top of your pcb and run through a standard laminator, and expose the positive image easier than using this method

    Ok. That was excruciating to watch.
    Small drops around the center - Really!!?
    Why not a large(er) pool in the middle and work it outwards!!? That way you eliminate air pockets and is easier (As in takes less time, especially on-camera!) to work with.
    Use some type of jig and/or fixture to hold the PCB while you're working it so your fingers doesn't depress the area you JUST worked over! This was done several times over.
