Hozier's new track "Too Sweet" is like ear candy! Vocal ANALYSIS of his new hit single!

- Hozier's "Take Me To Church" is one of my all time favorite songs to come out of the last decade, and some of the amazing covers that have been done have let that song continue to live on towards infamy. So when he dropped a new single last month that's already reach number 1 on the top 100 on Billboard, it was no surprise for that to happen, and no shocker for me to want to listen to it for the first time here!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Hozier performing "Too Sweet" for the first time.

Most underestimated lyric in this song IMO: "Pretty as a vine, sweet as a grape, if you can sit in a barrel, maybe I'll wait"
I... just got it. I didn't the barrel line until just now. Wine. He's saying if she ferments (matures) into Wine, he'll be there.
@@OpDDay2001 I think something similar. He is saying she is too sweet and contrasts that with his love of black coffee, neat whiskey and hard living. Whiskey is distilled from grain and stored in barrels to mature. Same goes for Brandy which can be distilled from fruit, including grapes. So I think the analogy is for hard liquor rather than wine which ferments in bottles - point is of course that in the future she may become less sweet and be right for him.
his music is poetry i love it
How it’s underestimated? It was the part that went viral
@@analiamariarabelocavalcant5499 I am not aware of it going viral but if you say so I am happy to concede that. Admittedly, I didn't do a statistical survey of lyrics, or a line by line social penetration analysis. The context of this comment was the fact it was missed reaction video, to which this comment was appended - sorry if that was not self evident.
Only Hozier could write a song where he basically says:
"It's not you, it's me."
... and women still just swoon.
It really strikes me as a "bad boy" and "good girl" where they give it a go, but the song is the guy going, "want to give my way a go? No? Maybe we just don't fit."
But yeah, a "it's not you, it's me" kind of vibe.
Instead of "it's not you, it's me", it feels for me "we have different lives and needs, maybe we just do not fit"
@@Shane_Bozelie Yeah. That's why the joke works. 😁
The reason "It's not you, it's me" is viewed negatively is that it's generally a cop out and a way to avoid being real, wherein this song presents real and honest communication... which is sexy.
This song has lived rent-free in my head for two full weeks.
Yep. It's still living here rent free 😂
Same
Finally more Hozier. I love the metal analysis but we need a look into Hoziers lung power.
ugh for real. agreed.
Shame he is now a raging liberal like most celebs scared to have own opinions. Well in public anyway
Hozier is steeped in Folk and Blues and Jazz standards. I highly recommend you look into him even more. If you want to check out his lyricisms, some of my favorites are "Jackie and Wilson," "De Selby (Part 1)," "De Selby (Part 2)," "Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene," "Nina Cried Power," "Francesca," "Eat Your Young," and "Damage Gets Done."
He also did a live acapella version of one of my favorite Irish folk songs called "Humours of Whiskey" which I love so much!
Nina cried power is an extraordinary song. The video makes me cry every time too. Thoroughly recommend!!
Yes please
Definitely! All the Hozier, he makes the most wonderful music AND seems to be a good egg ❤
"Work song" is what really turned me into him. Been in love with him since
The live version of Nina Cried Power with Mavis Staples: so freaking great!
I was lucky to see him in a smallish place (Bowery Ballroom,NYC- a venue I love) for a cheap price. It was a special sneaky announcement during his MSG gig (sold out and way to expensive). And I was lucky enough to get a ticket! I did not get to see, but that same week he played a bunch of songs at the back of a restaurant. I saw it live online so I wonder if it’s on UA-cam?
The year prior, I saw him at a medium-sized venue (great seats) when he toured Wasteland, Baby!
Since then I just can’t afford tix. I was just lucky with the gig at Bowery Ballroom. Standing only, low stage: they don’t oversell so it’s comfortable and you can see from anywhere.
One good thing about living in NYC: lots of opportunities to hear music one loves. I was fortunate enough to accidentally see Hozier 5+ years ago… when I was going home after work, (in midtown) at a subway station down by the tracks. He sang 5 songs including Take Me to Church (first song-I missed most of it); Work Song; Nina Cried Power.
Other musicians have played in subway stations including Ed Sheeran and U2.
The least expensive at his upcoming shows in Queens, NYC in June are just too expensive plus it’s a long subway ride from me in Brooklyn, 3 trains. And it’s a big outdoor stadium. My good friend lives a few blocks away: she said you can plainly hear shows when standing outside. So maybe a last minute decision… depending on the weather…
'Arsonist's Lullaby' is my all time favorite song by Hozier but this song is a close second ❤
I was going to comment something similar and I was scrolling and found you had the same opinion as me.
I came to say pretty much this!
It's one of my top 2 songs of all time. I'm so sad more people don't know it!
I don't know this song! Will check it out.
Mine's Movement
FINALLY!! I've been waiting for Hozier for so long!!
Meee tooooooo
Sameee
Hozier did the credit song for god of war ragnarok, the lyrics are so brutal and real (no idea if he wrote it himself) but still so beautiful, combined with his voice and the instruments was all I needed to be in love with this man's voice
He did write the lyrics!
The title is "Blood Upon the Snow"
@@beth_winegarner i am sure he did because as someone who is actively learning music i keep getting recommended him as a song writer, but saw reddit being dicks to him. so this makes sense!! he is awesome so far from my deep dive i am obsessed!!
I was lucky enough to see him perform this song live for the first time in Raleigh on 4/20. I got the tickets for my daughter-but I left the show a fan myself. If you get a chance to see him live, do it! So fun!
oh wow, i thought this day would never come ;)
One could’ve always hoped !
Me too!!!!!
i have also been waiting so much to hear her cover Hozier
YES HOZIER!!!!! I definitely agree, he's got one of the best voices in radio today and his songwriting is just as good. If you want to check out more, his last album is SPECTACULAR, best lyrics and vocals he's ever done IMO. He really uses his whole entire range in Who We Are, that song blows me away every time
I am in love with your ability to be so transparent and open with your excitement over good music; it's infectious. It always makes me smile to see someone so passionate about their craft. Honestly, it inspires me and reminds me to stay open and honest about who I really am and what sparks my genuine excitement like you do with music. Thanks for all of your content, you've got me nerding out over metal screams and vocal folds, and scaring people, probably looking batsh*t insane as I'm driving down the freeway practicing screaming new vocal techniques on the way to work.
Now you have to do his song Blood Upon the Snow! End credits song for God of War Ragnarok. I’d recommend a playthrough beforehand but that’s a 50+ hour commitment 😂
The song is amazing on its own, but yeah, after you have played through it is so much more tear jerking.
Seen Hozier live a few times now, and he's just fantastic. The voice, the lyrics... just fantastic. (Seeing him again in June and I can't wait!!!)
never seen him live but going through the comments seeing this same gorgeous narrative makes me wonder how isn't bigger. i just discovered him off this song and i am shoooooooooooooook.
Seeing him in September! So excited
Just saw him this week for the second time and he was amazing! Again! I will totally go see him again in the future.
If you'd like to check out more Hozier I cannot recommend his song Francesca more highly. Since it was released last year it has become my favorite love song ever recorded 😍 It has a number of REALLY good live recordings as well where he shows off his ability to switch vocal 'modes' on a whim even more. It's really spectacular.
The one he did in Glastonbury was gorgeous 😍 gave me the Cranberries vibes at the end.
IDK if you’re seen the subway platform version of Take Me to Church
Or, “It will Come Back” live sessions version.
Both are a absolutely amazing
Ooh! I need to dig through her catalog to see if she responded to that, because you can really see his form in the subway video!
seconding this!
My reading of the TSA line is that everything is closely monitored and controlled, whereas he drinks, smokes and just dgaf...
Her body is a temple (ref. Heaven's gate), his is a theme park! 😂
I agree. Basically just two ways of saying she is very careful about what she eats/drinks/puts in her body, as opposed to him.
Being careful just means different things to some. For example, I'm more frightened of distracted driving than I am of drunk driving. Not all of my family and friends agree with me on that, but then...all of their crashes have been bc of distraction...and none of them drink...
This song has been my new obsession! So excited for this video!
Fun fact: in one of his posts about the song, he said it’s partially inspired by an Irish phrase that can describe someone as “too sweet to be savory.”
A dose of giddy Elizabeth always goes down smooth. Thanks, Hozier.
I'm sooooo happy you reacted to Hozier!!! My daughter is using his song "Like Real People Do" for her wedding song (first dance) and an acoustic music only version to walk down the aisle to. I absolutely LOVE this artist! Please check out more. :)
The lyric videos visuals are there because this song was written for his album Unreal Unearth! The aesthetic of that album was all dirt and stuff like that. It's one of my favorite albums of all time, AMAZING listen, highly recommend
omg i just discovered him. did he do the dirt thing because people seemed to write him off aa one hit person? i saw that on reddit but i am floored because i am astonished by his gorgeous voice and lyrics. i am so curious about him and know nothing
@@foxyybfly He has done some pretty in depth interviews for this album cycle and fans have made some very comprehensive album breakdowns here on YT, those sources might be more illuminating for you
The Songs ICarrion and Butchered Tongue are really deep. Had to google a bit on both. Butchered Tongue in particular is a really rough topic to covet in a song
Unreal Unearth is supposed to follow the journey of Dante's Inferno, which is why the dirt/worms sort of focus. De Selby 1 and 2 are based on a book called The Policeman, and introduces it, then you go through the different circles of hell. There is a LOT of lore/lyrics digging out there, if you look!
Hozier has become my favorite singer. This is my anytime voice. It instantly shifts my mood ❤
"Who We Are" and "I, Icarion" are two of my absolute favorites of his songs rn I definitely recommend listening to them!
I, Carrion is one of his best IMO! His voice combined with the lyrics and the music of that song sounds so timeless. Francesca is amazing but I Carrion truly sounds like an ancient love story. And the way he injects the emotions into it - the love, desperation, and acceptance. I could talk about it all day long
Arsonist’s Lullaby has to be your next Hozier song. One of my all time favorites from Hozier.
It iis indeed one of my favs❤❤❤
Hozier is one of my all time favorite artists! Thank you so much for analyzing his music! 💛
I saw him live last year and hearing him sing live was so mesmerising! His voice sounds soo good live and has a certain power that I only felt in the concert hall❤
He was in a choir called Anúna before he went solo and they do La Chanson De Mardi Gras which features him solo. There is a live video performance of it as well.
I sincerely appreciate the fact you picked a lyric video. Being deaf, I normally use my live captions from my iPhone or iPad. But the subtitles already there makes it nice once in a while.
You don’t have to do all lyrics videos. I have ways to use my captions but once in a great while, it’s nice lol.
Well she didn't have a choice with this one as they only released the video version yesterday..
I saw him last night! The bass was even more “gnarly” live.
The song seems to be about a partner (or ex) who is obsessed with health/diet, longevity, structure/discipline, and a kind of purity, whereas he says he wants it gritty, chaotic, anything goes, carefree, spontaneous, and darker.
He's the "bad boy" and shes the "good girl".
I’d argue it’s more complex than ‘bad boy’ ‘good girl.’ More along the lines of ‘I’d rather interact with the world as it/I am, rather than expressing toxic positivity and trying to optimize my life.’ There’s an article called ‘i found the tenth circle of hell’ and it’s a great breakdown of the song and the general public’s interpretation of it.
@@MordredsGirl as a person who struggles deeply with mental health issues (diagnosed completely over and over) i agree with this. sometimes it is easier to live in that space than bring others into it. some people get it, and some people don't need to be in it.
@@MordredsGirl Well I agree for the most part, which is why that came at the end and was "quoted".
But one could argue that it is the ego part of us that gets in the way of self improvement. We need a balance between accepting (and being conscious) our shadow and ourselves, warts and all, while also trying to improve/evolve/grow.
These "characters" in the song are two necessary, opposite sides of the same coin. Hozier is Pisces and the lass is Virgo. They are attracted to each other precisely because they are not whole people and each has what the other lacks and what balances/complements each other. But opposites both can attract _and_ repel at different times, just like opposite signs in synastric astrology. It's this dance of push pull and integration-polarization that happens.
In real life, Hozier seems to be obsessed with sex, and very well may be a sex addict. That is a very limiting pattern to be stuck in. His ego will tell him that it is ok, because it is what he enjoys, meanwhile that quiet, still, inner voice that comes from his Spirit/Expanded self may be whispering, "you need to change this, to heal, you're holding us/you back".
@@justinw1765 Did you throw your back out with that reach?
I am just so happy you reacted to this. Hozier is the best!
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
Yes! I LOVE QOTSA! "No One Knows", "Go With the Flow", "Sick, Sick, Sick", "Make It Wit Chu", so amazing songs.
Please!
@@t.b.m.b. QOTSA are my favorite band but there are better songs to show vocal skills for Josh Homme (or maybe "In the fade" with Mark Lanegan)
Wow. This is awesome. I agree with everything you say. I was hooked instantly with that baseline. Thank you for introducing this to me. You rock
I just love his voice, story telling, and sense for flow, drive, and rhythm. Both Unreal Unearth and Wasteland Baby are incredible albums worth listening to. If you want a treat to analyze, I highly recommend his live session of De Selby (1) and De Selby (2) - including a treat of Irish accent to have a linguistic nerd-out regarding dialects and their specific phonations :)
Total genius!! Vocal perfection!!! I LOVE the Bass, but OMG his vocal control is awesome - what a beautiful song! One of best songs of all time!!!
your commentary always points out so many new things for me to love about these songs so im so excited to see you do this one!!
This is one of the best songs I've ever heard. No kidding. It's been stuck in my head for weeks now. Not only is the melody just so catchy.... the lyrics are SO cool, and the sound is so unique. Love this one. Thanks for the vocal analysis.
The way you descibred what makes his voice so gorgeous is so accurate - it's that control between light and airy and condensed across his whole range. Plus, lyrics, man does lyrics
Ive been obsessed with the entire album. Butchered tongue is amazing!
this is the channel i always am so eager to come back to every niw and then! your amazing reviews and breakdown of songs, the techniques, the appreciation of the artist is one of a kind. sending love to ya and your stunning family, Elizabeth! :)
I had not heard this song before but greatly enjoyed it. Always fun to be at the premiere for each new video on this channel. Elizabeth and her husband Kirk make the chat great fun. Premieres are every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, starting at 11 AM EDT. I try to attend each one, so I get introduced to many new artists.
I'm so excited to see you do Hozier again. ❤
Im going to see him this Tuesday! 😁
Arsonist's Lullaby, In A Week, and It Will Come Back. His voice... just soooooo amazing.

PLEEEASE delve deeper into the Hozier catalog! An absolute gold mine. Literally everything on Unreal Unearth… so excited to see the analysis to his works!!🙌🏼🙌🏼
Yes. Hozier. You rock E. He has such a sweet voice. Maybe Northern Attitude with Noah Kahan(toughest ticket in showbiz right now) and Hozier next up?
I did a really cool Hozier collab analysis over on Patreon, but this will be the first analysis I've posted on UA-cam. I truly LOVE his voice (obviously since I love "Take Me To Church" so much) so we'll see if this goes anywhere!
Noah Kahan is really killing it vocally now. And, he and Hozier are good buds and frequent collaborators. Really some of the best music being released. I’m so happy I watched Elizabeth’s reaction before the song set up in my head. Every listening I’ll be reveling in his nuances.
Northern Attitude is a wonderfully written and performed song 👍
Holy 1970s Batman! That sound was so perfect for the decade. Love this! Elizabeth strikes again! I think I wan to hear more Hozier...
His voice, I just love everything he does. Your analysis is on point, love how you break it down.
Your giggles and excitement makes my heart flutter
Thank you for this. This man is a brilliant musician, vocalist, songwriter, poet. Obsessed! I suggest you take a deeper look at him.
Wow, that is a really beautiful song, I really enjoy Hozier and his general sound! Loved the review and breakdown!
I heard this on the radio yesterday for the first time, and while I couldn't pay full attention cus I was driving I did think it was great. Now I'm able to listen to it properly for the first time right along with you and I LOOOOOOVEEE it!! I've loved Hozier for years and this just gave me chills! (yes I have a fever right now, but that is not the point)
I need a Hozier album analysis! love hozier and love your content!
I love Hozier so much, he can't make a bad song, and this one has been stuck in my head ever since it's release. I'm finally going to see him in Aug!! Been waiting 10 years!!! More please!
I thought this is the first time ive heard of this band but after checking out "Take Me To Church" I have definitely heard them before.. I checked out "Too Sweet" it is a very good song but now we need a metal cover of it.
I would agree, but I think it's too soon for a cover?
@TheCharismaticVoice ok maybe not this early but we all know sooner or later dan vasc will find this song
Leo will be on it soon, I'm sure.
Not a band. Hozier is the artist's name ;)
Great job, that summarize was really good, I'm impressed with how fast it was too! I wanna get one to go alongside my smartphone. I'm also impressed with the fluid natural voice model.
Omg this makes me sooo happyyyyy. Do more Hozier please!!
I saw him live once and he was absolutely breathtaking in a very minimalistic way. One of my favorites ever since❤
Loved this video - first I've seen of yours. Subscribed and excited to see more.
how i interpreted "you treat your mouth as if it's haven gate" is like someone who refuses to put junk, or anything "too sinful" in their mouth. treating it like a temple like you said. and the "the rest of you like you're the tsa" as in they're being just as strict with the rest of their body's "security". the symbolism/metaphors in this song slap almost harder than the bass IMO. i love love love this kind of imagery in music. truly a wordsmith and a master of his craft. and that verse that comes after, tells me this isn't someone they want to outright reject from their life. they're just someone who needs to "lose a little of their sweetness" to be palatable. cause they go on to say "babe don't get me wrong, you're as bright as the morning, as soft as the rain, pretty as a vine, as sweet as a grape", but he's saying he doesn't want the grapes, he wants the wine!. "if you can sit in a barrel," THEN "maybe I'll wait" but until then they're going to "take my whisky neat, my coffee black, and my bed at 3" i.e. I'll enjoy the bitter things in life that are real/more palatable to me. this song blew me away. i spent 6+ hours listening to it so I can try and sing It for karaoke asap.
He's incredible to see live, an outstanding front-man. I was able to see Hosier in Southampton a few years ago.
Not sure if you've heard much from Cold, but the song Quiet Now puts me in tears when I hear it. Scooter Ward is such a beautifully tragic soul and it shines through his performance. 10 out of 10 would highly recommend.
He’s so talented it’s crazy! You have so many amazing songs to explore
You neeeeeed to hear De Selby part 1 & 2, they are technically two songs but flow right into each other. You are gonna loveeee every moment of it! So glad you’re getting into Hozier!!
I was down in the dumps, then I heard this song on the radio, got me feeling refreshed. It's such an amazing song, sung by an amazing artist.
ive been waiting so long for a Hozier song to be done !
I've been waiting forever for you to show some Hozier, so many damn good songs and that voice...
excited for him and excited to hear the song!!!
ahhh please as much as i love too sweet and it's so cool to see you analyze and gush over it hehe, he has much "deeper" songs that i'd love for you to listen! he's such a great vocalist and guitarist, you need to listen to his live performances! recommend swan upon leda, unknown and icarion (some of my recent favs lol) hope to see more hozier on your channel!!

This song is living rent free in my head.his voice is just so raspy but at the same time so clear❤
I really had a stressful day. Seeing you beam and enjoying this song is sooo great!
Love Hozier! I am seeing him live in August, my second time seeing him.
I got too see him live he was spectacular
Always ❤ this song
Your videos are great keep up the great work 👍
Now you have to do Why Would You Be Loved. I cannot stop listening to that song either!
I was fortunate enough to see Hozier at the Sydney Opera House. The acoustics were amazing…… he is amazing🥰
More Hozier!! More!
Hi, first time watching your channel in the uk. Love your infectious enthusiasm for this song, which is the best song I've liked for a long time. Another great song i think you would like to review is a group called London Grammar the song called? Lord its a feeling -orchestral amazon original . Its out of this world and give goosebumps every time I listen. Keep up the great work.
Your giggle while you jam out😊 so cute
I love him singing the whiskey song, he has such a pure voice

Real Love Song. I think Elizabeth would love it
You should react to de selby (1&2)! One of my favs from hozier:)) dinner and diatribes is also amazing!
There's an AMAZING live performance by Hozier and Bear McCreary at the Game awards for GoW: Ragnarok's soundtrack song "Blood Upon the Snow"
Also features Bear on a Hurdy Gurdy! (ua-cam.com/video/qzcqvPneP0k/v-deo.html)
His voice is haunting.
Think the PHAT bass really helps balance his light airy vocals. The kind of juxtaposition which is just delightful 😁
We all need more Hozier in this chanel
Absolutely stand out voice.
The voice is 100% Irish folk, a lot of us guys who were trained for Irish traditional were taught to sing like this but he is a MASTER of the technique
YESSSSSSSSS please do more Hozier songs!! I highly recommend "Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene" and "Movement"
I had to skip u talking and looked up hozier video found an hour looped version I’m hooked .missed him so much didn’t realise till I heard this
the cry hosier can command is frighteningly real.
Who wants to live forever - Queen
Song is a banger. The dude I went to school with in Jazz class is one of the writers. Haven’t spoken to him in 20 years but he carved out quite the career!
His voice sounds like melted butter
I've been binge watching these videos. It's so nice to see something like this...especially as someone who people would pay to not sing.
I'd love to see an analysis of "Pariah" by Steven Wilson. That song always gives me goosebumps. And there's a live version on UA-cam (recorded for a concert album).
Saw him in 2015 after his first album dropped at a small venue, and then just last fall in a major arena. I would love to hear more from him, "Common tongue" has some of the most clever writing he's done
i really love your reaction to him too
I personally prefer listening to studio versions of songs before live. I like hearing how they intended it exactly.
