    whenever i tell people what dr wolff has reiterated in this video, that capitalism is by design unstable and exploitative people just outright deny that statement. the willful ignorance of americans on how their economic system is designed and how it actually operates is scary and frustrating.

      It's a religion at this point. Can complain about our bosses, jobs, lively hoods, but using the 'c-word' is too far. Capitalism is just the worship of money and a vessel to feed off the worst human behavior and suppress any good from the inside.

      Yes there has been a boat load of money invested to maintain the oligarchy and "Capitalism" to maintain it. Nancy MacLean, has a new book called “Democracy in Chains: It's a up to date explanation of why we are here. When I have a discussion like this with an uninformed citizen, I try to avoid labels and just talk about social policies with some emotional content. I'll ask things like. Do you think we should take care of the elderly? Veterans? The disabled?
      Speaking of Publix I wen't to have a few subs made there and the employee must have been 70+ years old. I asked her why she was still in the work force. She told me she had to be in order to afford Christmas presents for her grandchildren and help with bills..
      Stories like that make it hard to justify this American economic system.

      Recessions are necessary to clear out dead wood and mal-investment. The work then transfers to more profitable business ventures and those thrive. The best time to make money is actually in recessions. It is the best time to buy a car. It is the best time to buy a house. It is the best time to buy stocks or start a business. Assets can be acquired for pennies on the dollar. People who are smart make big money in recessions. Only idiots and fools lose their shirts. The wise BUY low and SELL high. Fools do the opposite.

      It's important to understand that criticism of capitalism is associated with advocacy for communism in mainstream consciousness. The real difficulty people have with honestly discussing the flaws of capitalism is fear of the concept of communism. You have to address this issue in some way first before you can get people to open up about the reality under the current economic system.

      For decades Michael Parenti has written and spoken about the ways in which we have been conditioned to accept capitalism/imperialism and all that goes with that. If anyone is not familiar with his work I urge you to check it out. He is awesome! You won't regret it. Dr. Parenti and Dr. Wolff are both excellent. They have provided me with many pieces of the puzzle that have eluded me for most of my life. I never miss a chance to hear them speak.

    Amazon... giving I quit bonuses instead of improving working conditions or increasing wages.
    All those people should have quit to make a statement...

    • @svtrader
      @svtrader 6 років тому

      What happens when those low skilled employees can't find another job and they're forced to come back, but, they have to pay back the quiting bonus plus interest?

    • @unmog4223
      @unmog4223 6 років тому

      Who says they cant find another job? Lots of people quit Amazon to go work somewhere else. Lets flip it though, what happens when all Amazons workers quit and no one will work there anymore due to terrible working conditions and low pay? Well Amazon would have to improve things wouldnt they?

    • @svtrader
      @svtrader 6 років тому

      Come on now, most of those people who work there is because they're low skilled. Otherwise, they wouldn't be there in the first place. And if they all quit then Amazon would have no choice but to invest in robots - it would a lot cheaper than dealing with all the chaos and uncertainty.

    • @doc7000
      @doc7000 6 років тому +1

      This is flat out not true, a lot of people are going there in many areas as other parts of the economy laid people off. Calling workers low skilled was used as part of a propaganda campaign in order to get others to be ok with low wages and working conditions for others. Amazon can afford to pay their workers better and they can afford to improve working conditions however they do not do this. this has nothing to do with they wouldn't be profitable at all and more to do with they wouldn't be as profitable. This purely comes down to greed on the part of Amazon, if Inn n Out burger can afford to pay its workers what they pay their workers then Amazon can afford to pay its workers more.

    • @svtrader
      @svtrader 6 років тому

      @Duane Craig
      I don't believe in unfettered capitalism, but, i certainly don't believe in full blown socialism, either. If you keep attacking Amazon they will no doubt resort to automation. Remember when 1,200 Amazon employee wanted to unionized? They end up getting fired. Amazon is ruthless.

      Hi Robert, For all of Professor Wolff's pontificating about Capitalism, the Patron portion of the program is where he makes his money. But in my view, how are we supposed to believe that he can think independently while he is panhandling? Might he not shape his opinions to cater to a higher rolling clientele? Also, does he really believe in educating the public, if he is so willing to cut off those of us who are not paying customers. Really, I can guess that Professor Wolff is always washing his hands, because somehow they never feel quite clean enough.

    Professor Wolff took note of the announcement that people in China now have a longer life expectancy than in the United States. The beginning of the decline in the conditions that contribute to this outcome occurred in the late 1970s. The organization Redefining Progress began to gather and analysis statistics on the lives of people in the United States. From this they developed the Genuine Progress Indicator.

    A comment on the Poor People’s Campaign and the ivolvement of Martin Luther King, Jr. A few years ago I learned that a long time colleague of mine happened to have attended college with Coretta Scott King. Later, as a Congressional staffer he had the opportunity to talk with Martin Luther King, Jr. to share his views on how to deal with poverty in the United States. My colleague had developed his ideas by studying the works of Henry George early in his career as a journalist. Interesting to me is that in King’s final book he quotes Henry George. Was Martin Luther King, Jr. ready to join the list of people such as William Lloyd Garrison, Jr., Leo Tolstoy, Sun Yat-Sen, Louis Brandeis, Frederic Howe and John Dewey who saw Henry George’s proposals at the best solution to poverty?

    3:50 Actually the Catholic church kept a low profile in the referendum, they had MASSIVE scandals in Ireland and were in no position to preach about the sanctity of life - even of born babies. The worst scandal was about the children of Tuam. Maternity home run by nuns between 1925 and 1961 for unmarried mothers. The children were taken away from the mothers often by force, sold into adoption to the U.S. - if they were lucky.
    A mass "grave" found - the many, many children were not officially and properly buried. And survivors of these home came out too.
    The scandal broke in the last ? 2 years, additionally to other stories of (sexual) abuse in homes, and exploitation of unmarried women as unpaid indentured workforce in such homes.

    As to companies accused of causing disease, they have and did not want to pay regardless of whether or not their activities caused the disease. Before OSHA, there was a hazardous work condition at Ford Motor in Norfolk, VA. How was the matter solved? The union voted to give everybody a 5 cent per hour raise and rotate employees in and out of the job. This could treat the problem by reducing exposures to paint vapors to a low average.

    I have a friend who became a Trumpist after being a Democrat her entire life. She totally buys into the "economy is doing great" mythology. She contends Trump is "doing so much for our country." I must add she is also totally dependent on her very small Social Security income. So, like many before her, she voted against her own best interests in electing Trump. We need more voices like yours, Prof. Wolff.

    Re: 2008 Economic Crisis: Rather then laying off its workforce many of Germany's workforce was given the option of participating in a short time work program. They were able to stay at home for days or even weeks at a time and yet they received 80 to 90 percent of their wages thanks to subsidies paid by the Federal Employment Agency This was not only beneficial in keeping unemployment numbers down but also helped employers which had a well trained workforce at hand once the economy picked up again.

    A Maximum income would be brilliant. Mainstream economists like to talk about money as merely a neutral means of exchange, ignoring that those with enough money can literally manipulate the society around us at the expense of those without the funds. So money is not just a form of neutral exchange, it's a form of social power. A democratic society ought to, at the very least, have a strictly enforced maximum income in order to prevent this or that individual or institution with sufficient funds from controlling the society.

    USA has an obesity problem, and most Asian countries have always had a longer life expectancy than Europeans. Also, China has, not just a bad wealth gap as the poorest people in china make like $350/yr while the richest make about $150k. The USA it's ~$30K vs $173k. So.......explain.
    Also, recesions and depressions are natural parts of a well functioning economy. It's like a large tree falling in the forest allowing smaller ones a chance to reach for the sun. Governments are what keep these big companies "too big to fail" preventing small businesses from growing and allowing big companies to take risks, and bully employees. If we just let these companies fail instead and stopped giving money to the big abusive companies there would be more give and take between company and employee and big business and little business.

      Tomato Pa Good to hear that. Why did you think democracy disappeared in communism? Prof. Wolff probably knows why. It disappeared because no sane person wanted to kill and robb the rich Kulaks so socialists had to hire the most psychotic members of society and give them power in order to achieve equality of outcome.

      the flaw is that the modern-day pharaohs will lose their slaves and their stranglehold on political power. socialism is VERY "flawed" for them. they are quite comfortable with things the way they are and will move heaven and earth to maintain their hegemony

      Tomato Pa companies are private institutions and it's illegal to install democracies in them unless you are a co-investor. They never meant to be democratic and never will be.
