My late grandfather was in the 1er Régiment de Dragons Portés / 2nd Mechanized Light Division / 1st Army that saw action in the double battle of Hannut / Gembloux. Never talked much about the war to my father. He recalled that he had twicked an Hotchkiss tank so that it could drive faster and that it had been evacuated at Dunkirk 'sur un superbe navire de ligne anglais' ie 'on a very fine British liner' (TSS Tynwald according to its military papers). The regiment spent two days in Weymouth in England to recover as they had not slept since start of the German offensive and then was sent back to the front line in France via night shipping to Cherbourg. His regiment was partially re-equipped and fought a delaying battle at one division against three until the armistice was signed on the 21st of June 1940. My grandfather survived the campaign but his squadron's commander, a captain and a WWI veteran, did not have this chance and got killed in May. One of the 100,000 French soldiers who would never come back from the Campaign of the West 1940 either KIA, dying from wounds or as POW.
Interesting fact that during that battle the French were capable of destroying more panzer tanks and losing less of their own tanks and the French had more tanks than the Germans at that time.
French had better tanks in general. And according to the battle... It was a draw. Both of them had about 600 tanks in the first day and lost about 200 after the battle. However the French was the side to retreat so the Germans took the battleground and could repair most of their tanks

Yes, its a big mistake to think the French just showed White flag as soon as they saw Germans. It was a bad luck actually... huge tactical and then strategical mistake which led to the surrender. But before that French fought well

This was great but do you mind telling me how some commanders can stick their hands out and their tanks still fired? The early panzers at that time like the ones.shown here used their commanders also as gunners, so I'm a little confused.
Great work! However is it because you did not have any S35 available that you used R35s instead? There was an amazing 'lego' S35 on the market (Coby or something) but when I contacted them it was not made anymore. Too bad you had to use an infantry support Renault R35 tank instead of the cavalry tank SOMUA S35 that distinguished itself during the battle of Hannut. Despite its turret and lack of radio flaws, the S35 could take any German tank. Most were lost due to the Luftwaffe, lack of fuel, mechanical breakdown and scuttling at Dunkirk.
