By all means you can paraphrase if possible, sometimes it is hard to do this though. For example, when asking them what the problem is, "what was it that you wanted to talk to me about" or "what seems to be the problem?" are the easiest ways of asking the questions. Sometimes candidates try too hard to change the question and they sound unnatural. For instance they may say something like. "What is the difficulty you are having?" which sounds a little strange. However, if you can use your own vocab and expressions when asking the questions, it shows language independence and will definitely impress the examiners!!!!
