I'm not sure what AU you intended, -but as usual imma do my thing and over-analyze because I can- but the dialogue implied a past relationship where Negan, for one reason or another, left Rick behind without very much of an explanation why. Whether this takes place during the Walker apocalypse, prior to it, -in the universe of supercrossovers- or just in another universe where the dead don't rise and Negan's an actual murderer facing actual legal repercussions for his actions is up for debate. Inevitably he ends up back at the start with Rick, possibly years down the line, having to explain himself to someone who never fully found closure for the sudden absence in their life.
Now I could speculate my favorite alternatives and how this blends in like a fine wine, but unfortunately I gotta go back to work again. Long story short, this gave me the feels. Big feels. Emotions. Angst. I love it.

I NEED TO WATCH TWD SO BADLY. You're making me ship stuff from a fandom I know nothing about except, zombie apocalypse and apparently it's gone to shit since Carl was killed off (then again, same could be said about SPN lately... even though I adore Sam and Sam & Jack interactions I'm frustrated more often than not with a lot of things this final season probably because binging all 14 previous seasons during quarantine means everything is fresh on my mind)
