Madame LaJulia Rhea was the very first black woman to perform with a major opera company, the Chicago City Opera in the lead and title role in Verdi's "Aida," in 1933. The Jewish Polish diva Raisa Rosa coached her for the role. Rosa gave Rhea as a gift the costume she made her own 1914 debut as Aida in with the Chicago City Opera at the Auditorium Theater. The Chicago City Opera was the forerunner of the Chicago Civic Opera.
