Perhaps because we hear them 1st from Taxi drivers, property agents or on the Radio before ever reading it. "Vayle de lob-bow" just sounds quite jarring . "Monty Cheerio" being the obvious exception, that's taken on a life of its own

What ever you are using to produce English translations is making a terrible mess of town names.
The town names are in Portuguese, there is no mess. Local people will understand you if you ask in Portuguese the way to a town...
