    There's no problem with the technique. The problem is that, with knife, you often don't see it until it's too late.

      If the guy with knife is faster than us, that will be a problem, because they sometimes take out their knife abruptly after being cornered. So this is the least we can do :
      1. Stay a distance, 'cause we don't know in which direction he will slash/stab. It will be safer in real life attack, unless you see that one chance to close the distance.
      2. Always focus on the knife and which direction it goes so we're prepared to weave or disarm. Skilled martial artists build this awareness instinctively.
      3. Once you get a grab of the knife wielding hand, disarm it and/or seize the knife. The chance is yours & of course you can always strike the neck to make them lose their control.
      If you have it really hard :
      Nunchaku or any kind of long weapon would give well performance to disarm the knife and the awareness to counter attack the knife strike and/or strike the feet of the attacker to make them down to the ground.
      Real life problem with knife (worst case scenario) :
      They won't even try to take a fight with you (playing friendly, talk nicely) like there's no problem, until you lose that awareness and slash/stab you from behind (neck is usually the target).

    Holding the knife , a malnourish person, or a person w/ disability.... Dont try to use or follow that same technique if the attacker, look stronger than you!! if you have no idea "Running is The best self defense"

      There's a lot that could be said as to why it is a good technique.Realistically ,if you're learning defending your self against knife attack there's no point learning to defend yourself from one stance ,you may as well learn all.This technique is a simple and natural move so that you don't need to spend a lot of time proficient at it.It is low risk,if you miss grabbing the arm in a fight it could be fatal.There's also thing's like the psychological effects the move can have.It frightens the attackers ,attacking arm ,which gives enough time to attack throat which is really how to disarm attacker.By neutralising him all together as soon as possible.

      How does punching his arm get him to drop the knife I don’t get it

    • @gregnorvell9730
      @gregnorvell9730 5 років тому +1

      @@brycemikula3959 I think it's more about getting the knife farther away from you and getting in close and fast. I think dude just drops the knife for practical purposes. But there is a nerve in the forearm (cant remember the name) if it gets struck hard enough, you ain't holding on to nothing. But we both no that's not real world shit.

      Range of motion (of BOTH)- odds are NOT better that you grab his wrist.

    • @rickywestley6820
      @rickywestley6820 5 років тому

      The odds of punching and grabbing are basically the same .The main difference is with grabbing you actually have to manage to get a grip of the person as well,which is a complication where as with punching all you have to do is make contact.Also considering as well that once you grab attacker on arm you become subject to his strength and reactions causing complications.Also grabbing arm means also you have less freedom to what kind of movement you can make from there.
