I think SCP-899 is self aware, cause as it saw that SCP-573 can neutralize it's effect, it also realized that only adults aren't affected by this melody, therefore it had created older versions of it's phantoms and more agressive as a counter.
Kinda sad how he died alone by himself in a cabin surround by monster children cursing him out and mocking him and he was mainly alone because of a incident that happened, and right before he was drinking for a party all by himself and even gave a toast to the man that got hurt by his actions and felt sorry. That's just a sad way to die

I like the story but the ending was unsatisfying to say the least.. But the rubber always does a good job of giving these SCP's justice in his own rubber way.
