  • How to Prepare Colonies for Winter - Episode 3 - First Feed - How to Overwinter Beehives
    Black Mountain Honey is a No Nonsense Beekeeping Channel.
    We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
    We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
    Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

    We supply F1 Mated Buckfast and Jolanta Queens throughout the season. The UK Mated Jolanta Queens are reared using genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

    On our channel you can find information on making splits with swarm cells, making increase with queen cells, grafting larvae, foulbrood and disease inspection, honey extraction and machinery, top tips for beginners, products reviews, instructions and guidance plus much more.
    #NO NONSENSE BEEKEEPING is a UK based beekeeping channel, designed to keep beekeeping as simple and enjoyable as possible. There are no overly complicated techniques or intricate pieces of equipment.
    We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!
    My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.

    Please can you cover the advantages of using inverted bee syrup compared to home made sugar syrup?

    Where do you get the plastic covers on the ashworth feeder as I have the metal 1s on the abelo feeders

      Just how they come on the Swienty feeders. Abelo ones are way better!

    Hi Lawrence, so I followed this method so far and my bees tried swarming yesterday, I opened hive and have cups and queen cells charged. Do you think this is due to the weather warming up?
    My other hive seems ok but did find some cups in there to.
    Any advice on preventing them swarming this late on?

      Id ensure plenty of empty comb for the queen to lay. Make sure the queen is still in there. Remove ALL cells and hope or the best.
      You sure its not emergency cells or supersedure?

      @@BlackMountainHoney Thanks for replying back Laurence 😊
      Queen is still there, I put super back on 🤦🏻‍♀️ (I know I chicken’d out)I found another queen cell on checking today almost closed, so maybe one I had missed . But no sign of any newly made cups or emergency cells so fingers crossed. Will go into winter on single brood at end of month when they have calmed down a bit. Think my fault was I fed them syrup maybe a bit to soon, which congested the brood space 🤦🏻‍♀️🐝

    Hi Lawrence we have been using rapid feeders,our hives were on the very light side four days ago. They were draining them twice a day and started to put on weight. When we changed the apiguard yesterday it looks as if most of the hive is full of nectar, this will be a problem for the queen to find space to lay? What do you advise please

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  2 роки тому +1

      Just give them a few days to process it. Should be fine. They have found something nice!

      I've found if they back fill with nectar it works as a good brood break for the Varroa as long as she has some space. Plus oxalic and your laughing

    So i take it then you can overwinter colonys on single National deeps. Or would those bees overwhelm them. I have herd conflicting advice just thought i would check. Cheers

      Ask 3 beekeepers a question and you'll get 5 answers. I winter some colonies on a single national deep, double deep and brood and a super. It depends completely on the size of the colony and the type of bee.

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  2 роки тому +1

      Yep. We now always compress to a single box. Gives good overwintering but more importantly for us, means we arent waiting for them to fill a double brood in spring. We miss the spring crop every year on double brood.

    Do you feed any pollen patties at this time or year?

      @BlackMountainHoney  2 роки тому +1

      Not for us in North Wales. Plenty of natural pollen around still
