- Dafen... A village of oil painters and artists in Shenzhen, China?
I had no idea what to expect. A friend told to get of at the Dafen metro station in Shenzhen and I would find a cool place. He was quite right. Alleys and alleys of painters and other artists.

Every city should have a place like this. Great video!
Totally agree!
tucainga I agree
are you sure? That's a painting factory, those worker are just copying master pieces
+niki MInja Have you been there? Have you watched the video? There are obviously people copying paintings (that are not meant to be sold as originals by the way) and there are some artists creating their own work.
GLOBIK i was a social activist in guangdong, I was helping 農民工(migrant workers) in Shenzhen for their human rights for 4 yrs. Most of the artist in Dafen are labour working in sweatshop. Because of their rural household, there's no social welfare for them. 老外不會中國國程不要亂說
I’m Chinese and I live in Shenzhen, and I go to Dafen to paint every weekend just for fun. There are so many beautiful paintings, surrounded by them makes me feel good.
Nice! I lived in Shenzhen for a bit over a year. I love this place too.
How should i contact factories to buy paintings???
This place is magical and RAW!!! I LOVE IT! no pretentiousness, just hardwork!
Yeah. Exactly. Dirty hard work. Lots of it. This place is so inspiring to me.
I would love to visit this place someday. Thank you for sharing!
You should! It's a really interesting place.
Thank you for watching it.
Without ART EARTH is "EH"!
And without ART, your first name is AI... Are you a robot? 😜
@@GLOBIK haha😂😁bdw I am also a artist,I love to paint.
That's awesome! I also try to draw more often, but I'm so lazy. 😒
Without EH EARTH is 'ART'!
Aarti Jaiswal l
village of artists, what a heavan.
God, I would like to live there forever...
Funny that you say that, I ended up moving to Shenzhen 2 metro stations away :D I love this place.
Are you aware that the job of this people is the replicate the same painting 100000000 millions times right?
Hey, I really enjoyed those gorg paintings and the vibe this place had. I'll defo be going down there soon in a few weeks. Thanks, keep it up!
I'm sure you will love it. It's really a cool place.
omg I love here! Thanks for introducing such wonderful place for us.
Glad you liked it! :D
Video taking like what you do could help tourists to visit their village and hopefully purchase many pieces. They should go around and sell their work. Art materials as we all know are not cheap (well there are), I mean, inexpensive. I do some art works, jut minor ones so I understand the frustration and other emotions of artists. Scientist have a big place artists not that much except for media.
Keep it up! don't let the world dictate what you want to do. Keep pushing your art work. It's worth it!
Too much oil painting summer products will rot the market
It's nice to see the artists share with you their arts and you share what you film with us💚
I'm happy that you liked it!
They are talented that's why they can reproduce artworks of other artists refrence is not bad at all .you can't draw everything from your mind sometimes it's okay to you refrence.again they are talented and amazing.
Well some artist are good at technical execution and others have great a imagination. Only a rare few have both... Well that's my opinion ;)
Bad copy
I like how the gallery owner is proud of his hard work.
As he should be, right?
Great video, thanks Globik.
Glad you liked it. Thanks for sticking around.
Inspiring! If I ever had a bucket list visiting this place is sure to be on it.
Why don't you have a bucket list?
What an Amazing place to be at,. Your a lucky guy to be there ,. Great video,. And thanks for sharing it too us all,.
.
I liked this place so much, I ended up moving to Shenzhen only 2 metro stations away for this place. Thank you for watching it.
@@GLOBIK many blessing to you,. Have a great life my friend.
Thanks for your blessings. I wish you the same. No matter what, I think we can all have a great life. It's mostly a matter of choices and perspectives.
Wow, that´s so cool, saw it in a famous german tv show once, but you´re raw style of capturing makes it much more relatable, very nice :)
Awesome! I'm glad you found this relatable. I try to make viewers feel like they're traveling with me.
4:40 works of this guy looks original and creative.
Indeed. His work seemed to be a bit all over the place (not a specific style or genre), but it was quite creative.
This was fascinating. Artists often become so concerned with quality of materials, space, and light that they forget about using what they have available to play. Nice video man, congrats :)
I like to create in a mess ;)
Thanks so much!
Lots. If you have any particular questions, I’d be happy to help :)
Wow I'd love to visit here.. amazing
I have never seen so many talented artists in one place!
Yeah. It's a great place.
really liking and enjoying these videos, its like a food +trip vloging channel with a casey niestat style... which makes it addictive like his videos
my favorite part about these videos are see him trying and talking about the food- was disappointed he didnt film it here
Hey! I'm really glad that you enjoy watching my videos!
I love trying new food... Sorry if you were disappointed here because I didn't share my meal. But not all my meals are interesting unfortunately and some videos have nothing to do with food. But you will see me eat again soon ;)
Thank you so much for sharing🙌🏻
Hey! Thanks for watching!
Chinese people are so talented and humble.
Qué maravilla de sitios , donde convergen el pensamiento artístico y la creatividad humana , sólo el arte nos hace diferentes a los demás seres vivos, y los hace amar toda manifestación de vida......
Hi , thanks for this video. I was just checking of Chinese art and I found this video. It will be more helpful for me to understand Chinese art.
Awesome! I'm happy if my video brought some value to you one way or another.
What a great place. Lots of amazing work. I would love to have one in my city.
Yeah. I love this place too. I ended up moving to this city only 2 metro stations away :)
Beautiful, beautiful.
One person asked if there was a copy of a Warhol, and yes, I saw the same thing.....looked like a painted reproduction of one of the "marilyn silkscreen prints. Anyway, a totally interesting part of China, and being a painter myself, loved the video.
Yeah. There were many copies and/or reproductions. There were also many original pieces. It's definitely worth the visit if ever you're in the area. Glad you liked the video!
Loved that canvas dragon door. Sooo cool!
Yeah. Me too! I really thought it was a real door that he used to make a painting.
Loved this! X
I miss that place
We are art family from all over the world.
🎨🖌✏️🌍😀
amazing world, .so many talents!! As an artist tempting me.. thank you for sharing
Indeed! I'm happy that you found it interesting and maybe even inspiring.
Great video good people. It's a beautiful place.
Amazing sunglasses
Thanks! Yeah, I miss this place.
Hahaha! Thanks 😎
Such a wonderful place...want to go
Amazing job
Thank you for sharing
The pleasure is mine. Thanks for watching it! ;)

Let me know if you do :D
Very interesting place.
Yeah, definitely. If you happen to go to Shenzhen, you should check it out.
I like traditional chinese paintings
wow .. .. .. thanks alot to show my dream land.
My pleasure!
Wow amazing.
I also think this place is amazing.
Another cool video, I love the art and the vibes in this neighborhood
Thanks, man! Yeah. That place was really cool. I'm actually considering moving to Shenzhen. If I ever do, I will go to this little spot regularly.
GLOBIK cool Shenzen looks amazing, it's like an nyc but cleaner
Not sure I would compare it to NYC in any ways, but it's indeed quite clean.
GLOBIK well I'm in nyc, I'll have to make a trip and compare for myself hahaha
You should. And if you're there, you should definitely go to Hong Kong.
If you check my video "Subway From China to A Different Country" you can see how easily you can get there... And it's worth the unique experience ;)
Some of those landscapes are really nice.
Indeed. I personally love those mountain landscapes.
insane, stunning and depressing all at the same time.
What's the depressing part to you?
There are a couple of depressing parts to Defin. One is the way that this art copying economy has followed classic capitalist economic models and human social trends, resulting in the profit margin being driven down to the lowest possible amount. And who benefits? Not the craftsman, as the video makes clear, but the multi billion dollar corporations who get art rediculouly cheap, the middlemen who take massive shipments overseas and jack up the price seversl thousand percent with no royalty back to the makers, and ultimately the much better off tourist who could afford to pay ten times more. So it is depressing that skilled producers get the short end of the stick again. And depressing that not once in the video was there mention or hint that maybe giving up a little freedom and getting organized as a trade union, or get permission to form a guild or consortium or union to stabilize profits would be a good idea. Lastly, they are thieves without compunction. While much of the work may not be outright copyright viloation, they are making a living (so to speak) by stealing the intellectual proprty, the genius of others, or other cultural heritages. What is depressing is that the buyers have all the money to buy art but are too crass and base and cheap to know how to buy original art, and the trades people just want to exploit that market . Two peas in a pod, leaving the people and cultures who actually invented the original work out in the cold. That's depressing
+Sean Arthur You shouldn't get your misinformed speculations make you depressed. It's not healthy ;)
You raised a few good points, but overall you seem to be guessing on a lot of things like who the buyers are and this idea of forming a union or a guild. It seems like you know very little about this place, about their doings and most likely about China in general. Sometimes it's better to actually dig and learn more rather than let your assumptions get the best of your mood.
well, yes, I know very little about this place. I am giving my reactions to the video. I did read a couple of online articles as well written within the last year about Dafen. But didn't the video (and this article, www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-village-60-worlds-paintings-future-jeopardy ) make clear that the artists and small companies of artists basically sell wholesale to distributors (who are wealthier than they are) and multi national companies worth billions of dollars, at ridiculously low prices? AND that the prices the copy artists are charging are no longer enough to live on. Where I live I see this artwork for sale. a nice flower painting the distributor paid $1.20 for sells here for $79. That is 66 times markup. I am guessing that its is the same everywhere else. As to the idea of organizing, yes I understand that this is China and a different culture. It is a diverse and enormous culture and a huge country. It was a deliberately provocative idea. But I will stand by the idea that exploiting others for wealth and power is wrong, which was my point. Dafen appears to be a wonderful synergy of business opportunity, talented workers and timing. But its success and now gradual decline has also proven that Dafen is like a headless giant lurching into an uncertain future.
Well that's the reality of pretty much every business, where bosses will make much more than skilled technicians. Nothing new here. Do you think the Nike sneakers you wear cost anywhere close to the $150 you paid for them. I don't know what you do for a living, but people being exploited for others wealth is the majority of the world. I used to work in retail. The amount of money I brought to the company in sales versus the minimum wage and pathetic commission I was getting is absurd. And I could give you an endless list of examples.
Slavery unfortunately still exists in different places around the world. But from what I've seen so far, most Chinese factory workers as well as those painters are quite free. A lot of people quit their job during Chinese New Year because they want to go back and spend time in their home town. Then they will find another job when they need money again.
I'm not saying that this village is paradise. All I'm saying is that some people choose to use their skills and talents to work for a rate that's low but steady while others will take the gamble of maybe becoming successful by creating their own work... Or live like a poor but free bum forever. They are not chained slaves. It's the same almost everywhere. I make videos. I try to be as independent as possible and push my own creations hoping to, one day, be able to live comfortably making projects I'm proud of while I currently accept my very humble and unstable lifestyle. On the other hand, I know some videographers and editors that are far more technically skilled than I am, but they choose to work for companies to make boring videos for a very average rate. They are worth much more in my opinion. Should we feel depressed for them? Maybe they do not have this ambition, maybe they have amazing technical skills (like those painters) but no imagination or storytelling skills, or maybe they rather get a steady paycheck each week and not have to worry about the next gig or the next month.
Nice, I got a painting of my two boys from Dafen around 7 years ago. Email them a picture, paid around £100 and got it a few weeks later. If you paid more l would get a more experience artist. Really happy with the work and it's been on wall ever since.
Interesting.
Dafen is a place full of this kind of sweet stories. They not only have easily reproductions, also have such special painting commissions which all have stories behind them, just like you.
@@phoebey8130 I'm sure it is. And also stories about artists who create their own original work. I just went back today. I love this place.

Yeaahh! I'm gonna try to upload more frequently. I have a ton of videos already filmed that need some editing and some love. Time to catch up!! Well I will try at least :/
There are artists in every part of the world.
Yes. Indeed. But it's not everywhere that you see an entire "village" or neighbourhood just for them.
Maravilloso!!!
China's beautiful place love from India 🇮🇳
Yeah. There are some beautiful places in China.

The Mecca of Artist! Great place to be!
i loved this place too, there are some galleries you can go inside paying, not sure if was open when you went there
It's an amazing place. Last time I was there, when I was living in Shenzhen, they were building something. It might be it.
The villagers of that place is China is good, established, establishes plenty of their works of art in many countries, villages as well, that houses and preserves GDP of a lifetime. It always does the work continuously and makes wonders of appreciation, the way they value textile, manufacturing, designs, pottery and 3D making. They are no boundaries when it comes to works of arts, it works in so many ways that even the young treasures. Priceless moments. Preserved.
Huh?
Bon c/est est tres interessant merci
Merci à toi d'avoir regardé. :D
This is unbelievable. I wish my country Pakistan had at least one market dedicated to drawing and painting.
Yeah. I totally agree! I feel like every city around the world should have a place like this
That door, very nice.

Really?! Well I still feel awkward talking to the camera... And even more in public. It's good to know that I look more confident. I guess I'm slowly getting better at it.

Yeah. It's really a special place. I miss it.

Verdad. Es un lugar magico.
I really like your videos, you bring us with you on a trip every time. You should meet up with SerpentZa, he lives there, you deserve some good exposure for your channel ;) Cheers!
Thanks! I really appreciate that. I actually met SerpentZA. You can see him in my video "Subway From China To Another Country".You should check it out if you haven't ;)
Thanks! I'm really glad you feel this way about my channel. It means that I'm doing something right.
I might add that I discovered Globik from SerpentZA's videos -- I think it was called "Chinese People are Really Friendly".
I wish to buy if I go travel someday
wonderful mixed media,,, i watercolor everynight...i would love to go there very inspiring.... thank you
I bet you would love it if you're into painting. If ever I move to Shenzhen, I know I will go there to hang out once in a while.
Vary Nice village
Yass! I love it too!
Many websites offer ‘picture to painting’ services performed in China for very reasonable cost.
Their landscapes always turn out amazing, but portraits can be a little off, and even insulting if you are sensitive to imperfections.
Great video. I live in HK but never been there. I really like the way you explaining thing. Can you teach me some tips ? At work I like working but I ain’t good at explaining especially its require in my job. I either gave too much details or too brief. The way you talked is a very good role model.
Hey! Thanks! I don't know what tips I could give you. I don't consider myself that good and, you know, videos allow editing. The only tip I could give you is to practice again and again. And maybe record yourself so you can listen or watch it later to see what you can improve.
@@GLOBIK thank you so much. Look forward to see more your videos
Waooo😍😍
ow nice nice nice... hugs from brazil
Thanks! :)
I want to make a village like this in my country. All artist welcomed 🙏🏿
Good idea! You should. Start small with a few local artists you may know and then more will come when they will find out how great the place is.
Let me know when it's happening. I could travel there to make a video about it ;)
Does anybody know the name of the artist that made the painted door, and the Earth viewed from space paintings?
I took his card back then, but I don't think I have it anymore. Sorry.
Good morning frnd🌹nice ji🌹watched👌
huh... Thanks?
